2. Introduction- Why is the audience
important?
It was essential for us to gather information from our target audience
as our audience were instrumental in the development of our film.
As our film is part of a promotional package for schools, gaining
interest from the audience was key both in promoting the message
but also as a marketing tool.
Audience is key- We felt that the information gathered from the
audience feedback questionnaires would help us develop and
improve our product and tailor it better towards their needs and
interest. The target audience that we decided to show it were a
group of AS Media Studies students, firstly this demographic is a
similar age that we hope to promote the film to. Secondly we felt an
AS Media group would be more critical of the technical and
practical aspects of the short film.
4. Reason for choosing our questions.
Question 1 & 2..
1) How much did you enjoy the short film?
This question is vital to the questionnaire, because the aim of our independent film is
to successfully entertain our audience, while displaying a social issues. As the first
question it helps us, the production crew to understand how the viewers absorbed
the media product and whether they found it enjoyable. It is vital to know because
we wanted to directly appeal to the target audience , teenagers between 13 to 18
year old, which is why in the pre-production we carried out a questionnaire aimed
to find out the interest of the audience, for instance we included a quantitative
question about the desired length of the film.
2) What is the message that you receive from the short film?
We have designed this question to allow freedom from the audience to express
their views and thoughts of the message which they receive. We felt that this
question would be helpful to compare whether the audience receives the
message as our initial aim which is raise awareness about the importance of
education, therefore it is an easy technique to raise a comparison to evaluate
whether the short film has been successful.
5. Question 3 & 4…
3) How much do you think the short film raised awareness of the
importance of education?
This questions is the key question, as it based on the potential aim of our
film, therefore it helps us understand how well our film promotes this
message using a 1 to 5 answer brackets, as opposed to the conventional
“yes” or “no” which gives a more detail response, let alone it allows the
final results to be easier to analyse.
4) In your opinion how much do you rate the cinematography?
This question relates to our chosen respondents, being AS Media Studies
student who apprehend the technical field of film production, for instance
the purpose of long shots etc. We also hope that through our respondents
we obtain critical answers as they have knowledge of the subject.
However the question is also designed to be answered for anyone with no
knowledge of the media subject, such as our target audience , being 13
to 18 year olds.
6. Question 5 & 6…
5) Did the short film grab your attention?
Asking this question helped to challenge the pre conception of short
films , and bring awareness to the idea that short films can be
enjoyable and engaging as well as educational to watch.
6) Did the short film successfully display the concequences of
dropping out of education?
This was a key question as it relates back to the aim of our short
film, which is to advise and persuade the viewer not to drop out of
education. This links to the ideas sorrounding protest cinema and for
change because it questions the viewer and opens up debate about
a social topic.
7. Question 7 & 8..
7) Do you think the sound was appropriate in setting the mood of
the scene?
The purpose of this question is to judge the successfulness or failure of
the production , especially in the sound field and its ability to create
emotion. According to Cohen 1999 he sates" Emotion cuts through the
eight functions of film music identified: Contributing to the narratives's
continuity , emotional meaning of events; induction of mood , creation
and activation of memory..“
8)Did you find any of the aspects of the film offensive?
The reason of this question relates to the idea of media representation ,
not wanting to wrongly represent a particular race , gender, social
class or age.
8. Question 9 & 10
9) Would you introduce this short film to your friends or family?
Word of mouth is an essential tool for promoting our short film ,
particularly if it is easily accessible on Youtube.
10) How well do you feel you relate to the character?
Audience engagement is one of the key aspects in the film industry,
therefore asking this question was useful in terms of understanding
whether the audience felt involved , or excluded with no one to relate
to.

As the majority of respondents were (60%) were
females , this may have affected some of results on
representation , leading to biased opinions. If I was to
repeat this task I would ensure to have a balanced
of both male and females in order to gain reliable
feedback.
The main age group we aimed at was 13 to
18 , therefore appealing to our target
audience. In the future I would consider
getting adults , such as teachers to see
whether the film is a useful tool to impact the
life’s of young people.

how much did you enjoy the short film
I was pleased to see that the majority of the audience
felt that the film raised the importance of education,
with 50% of the audience strongly believing that the
film did promote the message of education. However
a few viewers felt that it did little to promote this
message. To ensure a majority were in favour of this I
believe it would have been necessary to combine
with the film the promotional package for schools
including lesson plans and advice to accompany the
film. With these support materials would be easier for
the audience to consider the questions raised in the
film.

70% of respondents agreed that
the short film kept them engaged .
It’s a relief because during
production we had to consider
certain elements in order to directly
appeal to the viewer, such as mise
en scene and choice of non
diegetic sound, to build suspension.
