We practice software development every day when we go to work. However that practice is task centric, we are doing for the sake of finishing the task. Deliberate practice switch the focus to doing it for the sake of becoming better. We set a time and some rules to guide us and do it until we master it. This talk introduces the concepts and gives ideas to implement it in the context of software development using pair programming, code katas, dojos and code retreats.

Back in the ’40s, Samuel Eilenberg and Saunders Mac Lane started developing an entire new branch of mathematics: Category Theory. This was 10 years after Lambda calculus and 10 years before Lisp. Mathematics offers a powerful and concise language; we can represent a lot of complexity with short equations like E=mc2. This session will explore how programming can harness maths’ capacity for conciseness and expression, borrowing from Category Theory. We’ll discover algebraic data types that can impact the way we code tremendously. You’ll also learn about functors, monads, applicatives, semigroups and monoids and how they can be used in a PHP context.

If unit tests make classes more modular, by forcing you to test it in isolation, then what is the effect of expanding this to a less granular level, the acceptance and functional test. The more modern application architecture evolves, the more we hear the very old patterns being rediscovered and re-adopted. 1979 Trygve's MVC is a classic example, so are the SOLID principles. In this talk we will look on how Symfony allows for a really decoupled, easy to test application, by following on the footsteps of Alistair Cockburn's hexagonal architecture.

Where does design fit in agile projects? What is refactoring and what isn't refactoring? What is the relationship between design and refactoring, and design and architecture? In this talk we will clarify these and other questions around emergent design and how a TDD/BDD tool like phpspec can help you with the process. We will look into how phpspec helps uncover smelly code and point in the direction of refactoring techniques to guide the design of flexible, testable and easy to extend object oriented PHP code – enabling developers to focus on what’s more valuable for the customer at all times and re-steer the direction of the product.

Replacing dependents with doubles is a central part of testing that every developer has to master. This talk goes over the different types of doubles and explains their place in testing, how to implement them in a mainstream mocking framework, and which strategies or doubles to use in different message exchange scenarios between objects. In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
