Extension 1 Read the text and answer the questions below. Eye Tracking Imagine your eyes can control your computer. No, don’t click that mouse. Don’t touch that keyboard. Use only your eyes. Look at what you need. Simply, use your eyes to show the computer what you want. Is this possible? Not yet, but scientists at Imperial College in London are working on a new form of technology called eye tracking. These scientists are studying how the human eye moves when a person sees something. According to the researcher, Professor Yang, eye tracking can make communication between people and machines easier. In the future, scientists want to use the technology of eye tracking to help doctors in surgery. They also plan to use eye tracking to warn sleepy drivers so they don’t cause an accident. Eye tracking sounds amazing, but you mustn’t throw out your mouse or your keyboard yet! Research and inventions can take a long time. 1. What computer parts does eye tracking plan to replace in the future? .................................................................................................................................................... 2. How do people communicate with a computer in the technology of eye tracking? .................................................................................................................................................... 3. Extension 1 Read the text and tick the writer’s plans for tomorrow. Then arrange the plans you ticked in the correct order. The Best Elephant Park in the World My family and I are on holiday in Bali. Tomorrow, we’re going to the Elephant Safari Park. I can’t wait! I love elephants and this is the best elephant park in the world. I looked at the Internet website of the park last week and these are my plans for our visit to the park tomorrow: First we’re going to hand feed the elephants. According to the website, elephants eat about 250 kilogrammes of vegetables and fruit in a day, so it will probably take some time to feed them. Next, we’re going to ride elephants through the forest. Then, we’re going to watch the elephants painting pictures! After the elephants finish painting, we’re going to watch them bathing in the park lake. Next, we’re having lunch at the park restaurant by the lake. Finally, we’re visiting the park museum. It has got a skeleton of a Mammoth! Tomorrow will be a special day. I mustn’t forget to take my camera! Plans for Tomorrow order 1. ride elephants through the forest 2. look at the Internet website of the park 3. have lunch 4. feed the elephants 1 5. give the elephants baths in the lake 6. visit the park gift shop 7. visit the park museum 8. watch the elephants painting pictures 9. watch the elephants taking baths 2 Answer the questions about the text in Exercise 1. 1. UNIT 1
Extension 1 Read the text and tick the sentences below T (true) or F (false). Plastic at Sea Sea animals and birds are in danger. Hunting and global warming is partly responsible for this, but the main reason is pollution. The wind blows plastic bags, plastic bottles and balloons into the sea. Sea animals and birds eat the plastic because they think it is food. If they eat too much plastic, it can kill them. There are millions of plastic bags in the seas and oceans around the world. The plastic looks like jellyfish, the favourite food of many sea animals. Balloons are a problem, too. Birds see their bright colours and mistake them for food. Almost every sea bird in the world has got some plastic rubbish inside its stomach. Sharp pieces of plastic sometimes cut the birds’ small stomachs. Toxic substances in the plastic can poison the birds and kill them. About 1,000,000 sea birds and 100,000 other sea animals die every year because of plastic pollution. So, make sure you throw all your plastic rubbish into a bin! T F 1. Sea animals and birds are in danger mostly because of hunting. 2. Millions of plastic bags pollute the sea. 3. Sea animals often think plastic bags are jellyfish. 4. Most sea birds don’t eat plastic. 5. Plastic is a toxic material. 6. Almost a million sea animals die every year because of plastic pollution. 2 Explain each of the problems listed below. Describe how the problem affects people and animals. Then list as many ideas as you can on how to solve the problems. pollution global warming deforestation hunger urbanisation hunting ............................................................................................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................................................................................. .............................................................................................................................................................................
