2. Reasons for developing this
Most individuals discontinue exercise within six months of
starting their initial program (Dishman, 1982, 1994)
Although people find it difficult to encorporate exercise into
their daily lives (Dishman, 2001), women have a considerable
lower level of exercise partisipation (U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services, 1996)
Weight loss goals generallly are focused on conforming to
social pressures(Segar et al., 2007) and not promoting self-
worth and may result in decrease motivational states (Deci &
Ryan, 1985; Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997).
Medical Industry has told us the “we must” and “we should” and
this has resulted in rebellion. Rebranding health is needed to
create amazing experiences
4. Initial Idea
Was conceived from a personal experience
Product that would be worn on wrist of person
Main aim was to aid in short term weight loss
goal of the individual e.g. for an upcoming
event
Features of product
Record how many steps you taken throughout
the day
Measure heart rate to ascertain the level of
exercise
Measure sleeping patterns
All these features combined would calculate
5. Why I changed my idea?
Different skillset needed
Complex Industry
Very similar product exists in the market, developed by fitbit
6. New Project Idea:
Web based motivational
wight loss network
So what inspired my new
7. “Anything that promotes intimacy is
healing”
Bringing people together allows for healing and this can be
done through technology. The need for connection and
community is an unmet need
8. Future health benefits for thoes starting to change
their lifestyle can seam so far away and unattainable.
External Motivator is needed to lead us on the right
direction and reaffirm us that what we are doing
right.
9. Framingham Heart Study
Nicholas A. Christakis, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., and James H. Fowler
tried to understand the reason for the obesity epidemic and try
to assertain if it was contagious or not
Examined as study by Framingham and examined the results
from 12,000 obtained over 30 years about who you are, where
you work, what you do, who are your friends.
Results
Social networks play a powerful role in determining an
individuals change of gaining or loosing weight
Risk of become obese was highest if a close friend(s) was
obese.
It may be more socially acceptable if people close to him or her
gain weight
22. Changes to current system
“We have misbranded health benefits such as exercise. The
health and weight loss benefits doesnt create desire in people
to exercise daily. It become like a chore” (To keep moving,
Look behond the physical”, by Jane Broody, New York Times,
March 8, 2010)
“commitment and planning will mediate the relation between
participants’ goals and their participation” (Segar et al., 2008).
“social support is one of the most consistent correlates of
physical activity among women” (Eyler et al., 2002)
“Physical Activity Participation was lowest among individuals
with Weight Loss and Health Benefits goals and highest among
individuals with Sense of Wellbeing and Stress Reduction
goals. “(Segar et al., 2008)
23. Changes to current system
Extrinsic goals(e.g. looking good) : Benefits seen over time
Intrinsic goals (e.g. wellbeing) : Benefits seen immediately
Physical activity goals that are associated with greater
commitment and planning should be more likely to help
women sustain their participation.
Among midlife women who participated in a weight reduction
program, the strongest predictor for long- term weight loss
was increased intrinsic motivation for exercise (Teixeira et al.,
2006).
27. Technology to be Used
Dreamweaver
Flash
Geotracking software
ELGG
Drupal
If used with a mobile phone app, Pin Points, a geolocation
tracking software developed by Cauwill could be used.
28. What are the next steps?
Quantitate and Qualitative Research Methods
Blogs
Social Networking Sites
From this I will develop a Prototype and test it on online users of
weight loss websites, first time users and non internet savvy
users. Ideally, 2 prototype iterations phases will take place.

Traineo is still my favorite overall weight management application. It looks the best and has the best overall feature set. Last month they rolled out a new platform which includes: better graphing, speed increases when accessing the application, design enhancements and improved navigation. I really like the Traineo motivators program – you select 4 people to help encourage you to keep going.

SparkPeople is the most Web 1.0 of the list of reviewed apps but is also the most popular. They claim over 5 Billion calories burned and over 6 million pounds lost by their members to-date. The site is a bit much for me, but in my travels I’ve heard from many people who use SparkPeople daily. They have a sister site called SparkRecipes which focuses on healthy recipes.
