Trondheim is Norway's third largest city located in central Norway where the Nid River flows into the Trondheim Fjord. Founded in 997 AD, Trondheim served as Norway's first capital and remains an important religious and cultural center as the location where Norwegian kings have traditionally been crowned. The city has a historic center lined with wooden warehouses along the Nid River and is known for its well-preserved wooden architecture. A major attraction is Nidaros Cathedral, Norway's national sanctuary and an important medieval pilgrimage site.
