LIFE
Joan of Arc (6 January 1412 – 30 May 1431) was born in Domremy,
nicknamed "The Maid of Orléans". is a folk heroine of France and a
Roman Catholic saint. She was born a peasant girl in what is now
eastern France.

FAMILY
Her parents were Jacques Darc and Isabelle Romé, Joan was the
smaller of a four brothers:Jean d'Arc, Pierre d'Arc, Catherine d'Arc
and Jacquemind'Arc. Her family was poor, her parents were
peasants and she never learned to read or to work but she learned
to sew and to work with the animals.

In this period the rise of the House of valois(1328–1589), the
protracted dynastic crisis of the Hundred years war with the
Kingdom of England (1337–1453), the catastrophic epidemic Black
Dead (1348), and the expansion of the French nation in the 15th
century happened.

5. LEGACYBATTLE OF ORLEANS
Joan of Arc is most famous for having captained French forces in
the Battle of Orleans, in May 1429. At just 16 years old, Joan freed
Orleans, which had been captured by the English during the
Hundred Years War. The battle lasted just nine days. Just two
months later, the French had pushed the English back into
Normandy and crowned Charles VII King of France. Joan of Arc led
French soldiers to fight up north in the Artois region. In this battle,
Joan and her forces were outnumbered and lost the battle. She
attempted to retreat, but was captured by the English.
6. LEGACY
EXECUTION
On May 24, 1431, Joan's sentence was read. After her trial at the
ecclesiastic hands of the Bishop Pierre Cauchon, Joan was to be
turned. Joan relented and signed an abjuration in which she
admitted her crimes.
Joan said she was visited by her voices, condemning her
capitulation. Joan now said her abjuration was a mistake, that she
had not meant it.The Church judges called this a "relapse," and on
May 29 they handed her over to the secular authorities that she so
feared.After that she was condened to be burned.
7. AFTER HER EXECUTION
Twenty-five years after her execution, an inquisitorial court
authorized by Pope Callixtus III examined the trial, pronounced her
innocent, and declared her a martyr. Joan of Arc was beatified in
1909 and canonized in 1920. She is one of the patron saints of
France.

9. INFLUENCE
Joan of Arc rejected the cautious strategy that characterized French
leadership during previous campaigns.
During the five months of siege before her arrival, : the defenders of
Orléans attempted only one aggressive move and that ended in
disaster.

outlying fortress of Saint
Loup, which she followed.

called Saint Jean le
Blanc, which was found
deserted.

council where she
demanded another
assault on the enemy.
D'Orleans ordered the
city gates locked to
prevent another battle,
but she summoned the
townsmen and common
soldiers and forced the
mayor to unlock a gate.
