6. Martyn Yorke – Career
I have worked for a number organisations
including some of the companies you can see
here. Starting my early career manufacturing
gas cylinder equipment, after eight years
service and redundancy I gained experience in
some interim roles as a Warehouse Manager. I
naturally moved into Health and Safety whilst
working for Mayer Kuvert. It was here that I
managed the Health and Safety for five
Production and distribution sites. I have since
managed Health and Safety for DHL (JLR
Contract), Poundland LTD & Euro Car Parts UK.

7. Martyn Yorke – Career
(CONT)
My greatest challenge would be during my time
at Poundland where H&S was very much an
after thought when incidents occurred. To
overcome this I engaged with all levels of the
team. This included working alongside the
team members to understand the problems
and challenges they faced on a daily basis.
From this I could then look at the process and
modify accordingly to ensure they were clear,
simple and understood. My belief is keep it
simple, pictures speak a thousand words.

8. HSQE – Management
I have played a key part in the implementation
of Safety Policy using HSG65. I look at this
system as a good tool to manage safety and
bring on board the senior team. (including a
Director with responsibility for H&S) this system
subsequently helped lead to OHSAS 18801
accreditation
It is vital that all senior members lead by
example and encourage all to follow safety
guidelines.
It also vital that performance is measured using
both active (safety tours, audits) and reactive
(near miss, accident investigation) this will show
us how we are performing and provided any
trend that will need to be addressed. This has
been an valuable approach to implementing
safety at Euro Car Parts.

9. Motivation
Over the years my experience of achieving the best results from teams is
excellent. My philosophy is to lead by example and coach colleagues offering
support as and when it is required, or, if weaknesses are identified. I like to get
involved with my colleagues and take a hands on approach to activities or areas
for concern, often leading improvement groups and projects. I enjoy getting
down to the grass roots and engaging with the work force, after all, these are
the colleagues who perform the task each day of the week.
