DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND
WHY?

MORE INFORMATION ON THE MINORS...
 The minor magazine publishers (the ones I have
listed on the previous slide) tend to reach their
demographic merely through the internet via social
networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Websites
and Blogs. They do not have enough finance to
have integration and multi platforms like radio and
TV. These independent companies are not
horizontally integrated and do not possess cross-
media marketing like the major magazine
publishing institutions. It is argued that institutions
like these have less power to distribute material
compared to major publishing companies because
of these factors.
I WOULD NOT CHOOSE TO HAVE A MINOR
PUBLISHING INSTITUTION DISTRIBUTING MR.POP
 I would not choose minor magazine publishing
companies to distribute Mr. Pop because they hold
little power compared to the major institutions and
tend to only publish indie music magazines rather
than the mainstream Pop music magazine. I would
also not choose to have these types of companies
distributing Mr. Pop music magazine because of it’s
security. The minor institutions rely on social
networking sites instead of cross-media marketing;
so, if a type of social networking site goes bust, for
example, Facebook, then one way of distribution
will be eliminated. When researching into the minor
publishers online, I found that many have been shut
down because of factors like this or finance issues.
THE MAJOR MAGAZINE PUBLISHING
INSTITUATIONS:
 IPC
 Bauer
 BBC Magazines
IPC
 IPC is a major magazine publisher creating
contents for multi-platforms, across print, online,
mobile, tablets and events- with it’s dominance in
all forms of technology they engage with most
audiences. IPC are able to transmit their products
and ideas to wide audiences through the cross-
media marketing technique they employ.
I DON’T THINK IPC WOULD AGREE TO
DISTRIBUTE MR. POP MAGAZINE
 IPC media hold dominance and power over most areas
of the media industry, it would be perfect if they could
distribute Mr. Pop magazine because it would reach
masses of audiences. However, I don’t think they would
invest in publishing the Pop genre of magazine because
they tend to publish mostly rock genre music magazines
like NME and Uncut (magazines typically for 16+
audiences). With IPC being a dominant publisher they
essentially control what genre of music magazine
people tend to buy. But again, IPC media tend to go with
only distributing one genre of magazine, rock, which
cater for an older demographic; so in hindsight, maybe
this publisher would not be an ideal distributor of Mr.
Pop magazine because the demographic of Mr. Pop
magazine is younger.
BAUER
 Bauer is a worldwide media empire offering over
300 magazines in 15 countries, as well as online,
TV and radio. Bauer is a multi-platform UK-based
media group consisting of many companies
collected around 2 main divisions- TV and radio.
Bauer publish popular music magazines like ‘Q’,
‘Kerrang!’ and ‘Mojo’, they are all, again, of the
Rock genre and cater for older audiences. This
music magazine publisher holds dominance in the
publishing institution because of it’s horizontal
integration with other companies, it’s multi-platform
techniques, and it’s cross-media marketing. Bauer
have the access to market a magazine on their
radio station, TV and internet.
I DON'T THINK BAUER WOULD AGREE TO
DISTRIBUTE MR. POP MAGAZINE
 Bauer would be a fantastic distributor of Mr. Pop
magazine because it’s integration, cross-media
marketing and multi-platform techniques gain
access to large audiences. However, again I don’t
think they would invest in distributing Mr. Pop music
magazine as they generally tend to distribute the
Rock genre of music magazine, not the Pop genre.
BBC MAGAZINES
 BBC Magazines cater for a range of demographic
from pre-school children to adults. They have many
multi-platforms (TV, online, radio, etc) just the other
majors IPC and Bauer. BBC magazine publish
music magazines like Top of the Pops (the pop
genre) and BBC music magazine (the classical
genre). BBC magazines do not conform to
distributing a specialised genre like IPC and Bauer.
I THINK BBC MAGAZINES WOULD AGREE TO
DISTRIBUTE MR. POP MAGAZINE
 I think BBC magazines would be the ideal
distributor for Mr. Pop magazine as it has direct
access to the demographic Mr. Pop caters for (12-
16 year old males) as BBC magazines publishes
from pre-school children right up to adults. Although
BBC magazines already publishes a Pop music
magazine there will be no competition as Mr. Pop is
aimed at the male demographic. If BBC magazines
would agree to distribute my product they would fill
a gap in the current market.
