◆Right-Sizing the U.S. venture capital industry
Paul Kedrosky, June, 2009.
VC returns have stagnated and declined, with the industry having seen little recovery since its go-
go days of the late 1990s. To provide competitive returns, we expect venture investing will be
cut in half in coming years. Lowing valuations and improving exit multiples should help
resuscitate the VC industry.
◆The VC industry is finally shrinking down to a workable size
Paul Kedrosky, Mar 16, 2010.
We have an industry that hasn't delivered a multiple above 1.0 on invested capital since 1997.
We have an industry that, as of end of year 2009, sunk to a negative ten-year internal rate of
return. This is a sick business, and that is understandably leading to fewer investors wanting a
part of it, which means outlays are shrinking. Eventually, the industry will shrink to a point where
it delivers competitive returns – it may even be there now given the declines of last year.

◆Every time an engineer joins Google, a startup dies
Chris Dixon, February 11th, 2010.
VC returns over the last decade have been poor. The cause is widely agreed to be an excess of venture
capital dollars to worthy startups. Observers seem to universally assume that the solution is for the VC
industry to downsize.
For example, Fred Wilson says about VC:
You cannot invest $25bn per year and generate the kinds of returns investors seek from the asset class.
If $100bn per year in exits is a steady state number, then we need to work back from that and
determine how much the asset class can manage…. I think “back to the future” is the answer to most
of the venture capital asset class problems. Less capital in the asset class, smaller fund sizes, smaller
partnerships, smaller deals, and smaller exits.
Fred Wilson
ラスに関する多くの問題に対する解は「Back to the Future」だ。

Twitter、Facebook、
Non-

Growth Capital
