Leading Agile and DevOps during the past 3 years at Amdocs, 27,000 employees company, made me realize that in big and complex organization relatively small issues are often not quite easy to solve. I learnt that sometimes in order to solve complex problems we can look for solutions on other disciplines. I understood that behavior is not a result of managerial instructions and not driven by the nice slogans written on the company walls. The hidden behavioral instructions that lays in every organization are actually the unspoken codes that dictates how decisions will be made, how new employees will be onboarded and how the communication will work. They determine if there will be room for innovation and continues improvements or not.

The journey to Kubernetes tends be long and tedious as it involves many changes including the CI/CD tool chain. If ‘DevOps’ is anything, it concerns how we structure the various functions collaborating to manage information technology. Changing the organization of people to support high performance is one of the hardest and riskiest changes, but it can bring huge benefits. Unfortunately, many people think there is such a thing as ‘best’ organizational structure. Or they believe that you can improve your structure by emulating some other organization. However, we benefit most from changes in organizational structure if we think of it in terms of a dialectic evolution responding to current issues, but also giving rise to its own new issues. This presentation synthesizes 25 years of experience with changing IT organizations - the good, the bad and the very ugly.

For each PR bitbucket generates {pullRequestId}/merge branch, which simulates state of target branch after merge. To ensure a green trunk we have to run all related builds on this branch. After merge of one PR results of all other open PRs will be rollbacked and you need to restart all related builds because of updated upstream. Accordingly, we get a large number of rebuilds, which is a big problem in a monorepo. We solved this problem by developing a bb plugin based on independency graph.

On réduit souvent DevOps au déploiement d’outils permettant le provisionning automatique de l’infrastructure et le déploiement rapide de nouvelles fonctionnalités. Cependant, ces nouvelles possibilités, couplées à l’introduction de nouvelles pratiques comme l’IaC, permettent de donner de l’ampleur à notre transformation DevOps. Mais voilà, après quelques mois, la fréquence des livraisons est en chute libre et la tension entre les équipes s’est accrue : les Ops grognent à cause des 5 derniers déploiements ratés, et les Devs taclent les Ops pour leur ignorance de l’architecture microservice. Une vague impression de déjà-vu peut-être… Et si nous avions oublié quelque chose… Dans cette session, nous vous proposons de partager les modèles d’organisation mis en place ou observés ces dernières années au sein des entreprises pour lesquelles nous avons travaillé. Si tout ne s’est pas toujours déroulé comme prévu, ces changements organisationnels restent le catalyseur nécessaire pour faciliter la transformation DevOps et la pérenniser.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
