Top 10 Things to Do in Seattle
Seattle has fun things to do and see for the whole family. The Top 10 Things to Do in Seattle
encompass something for everyone and range from the great outdoors to local history. The Emerald
City is vibrant with sports, arts, music, sightseeing and great restaurants. If you are planning a trip
to the key to the Pacific Northwest don't miss out on the top 10 things to do in Seattle. The
memories will last a lifetime.
Space Needle and 1962 World's Fairgrounds
The most iconic image in the Seattle skyline is that of the Space Needle. Built for the 1962 World's
Fair, this tall, spindly tower resembles a UFO on stilts. The observation deck provides magnificent
views of Elliot Bay, the Queen Anne neighborhood and the city itself. Light snacks and hot beverages
are available, so bring the camera and enjoy the 360 degree views from over 500 feet in the air! The
kids will love the rides scattered in the surrounding fairgrounds. The Pacific Science Center is a
great place to take children. The PSC also has two IMAX theaters showing both educational films
and new releases. It is easy to spend an entire day just having fun in the Space Needle complex.
Experience Music Project and Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame
A stone's throw from the Space Needle is the space age Experience Music Project. Funded by
Microsoft's Paul Allen and designed by Frank Gehry, this building is one of the most unique in all of
America. Rotating exhibits mean something new every time. The building also houses a Science
Fiction Museum. May you rock on and prosper! The original 1962 Monorail carves its way through
the building and is a great way to get downtown to take on more of the top 10 things to do in
Seattle.
Pike
Street Public Market
The public market is a sensory overload! The sights, smells and sounds of this bustling market must
be seen to be believed. Fish tossers, fresh fruit and vegetables, coffee shops, handcrafted items,
souvenirs, and so much more! From carved statues of Bigfoot to the famous Pig, this public market
draws tourists from all over the world.
Ferry Rides on Elliot Bay
From the public market, it is a short walk to catch one of the many water taxis or ferries servicing
Elliot Bay and Puget Sound. Take a quick ride to West Seattle to experience Alki Beach or a longer
cruise around the locks, Bainbridge Island or up into Puget Sound. The views of the cityscape from
the waterway are spectacular and this is a great way to experience the city from another angle.
Alki Beach
The laid back region of West Seattle is home to Alki Beach. This stretch of beach draws sunbathers
and has great places to walk, bike and skate. Quirky features like a Statue of Liberty and a famous
old lighthouse attract people. There are many great bars and restaurants along the beach and, of
course, more great views of the famous Seattle skyline.
Seattle Aquarium
The aquarium on the waterfront is a great way to experience marine life in the Pacific Northwest.
Salmon, otters, sea anemones, starfish, eels, seals and even an octopus call the Seattle Aquarium
home. The kid friendly atmosphere features many hands on exhibits, but it is still adult enough to
keep even the most season traveler entertained.
Seattle Art Museum
The Seattle Art Museum is only a short walk from the Public Market or Pioneer Square. It is easily
recognized by the 50 foot tall Hammering Man kinetic sculpture out front. This well stocked museum
has some rare treasures and encompasses traditional paintings, woven Indian goods, sculpture,
ceramics, architectural antiquities, totem poles and more! It is spacious and a great way to spend an
afternoon. Some of the most current exhibits include Andy Warhol and Kurt Cobain.
Pioneer Square
One of the busy tourist areas is the historic Pioneer Square. It is easy to spend an entire day in the
area around the Square. Bill Speidel's Underground Seattle Tour is a common tourist destination.
The firefighter memorial in Occidental Park is a favorite, too, with its lifesize statues
commemorating the fallen firefighters. The Merchant's Cafe is Seattle's oldest restaurant and is
directly across from the famous historic iron and glass pergola. A block over is the Smith Tower with
its opulent lobby, gloved elevator operators and magnificent views of the city from its observation
deck. The Pioneer Square area is commonly called the "Heart of Seattle" and this are bustles with
activity both day and night.
Lake Union's Floating Houses
The large, freshwater Lake Union is a wonderful spot for recreation. Boats and seaplanes are often
spotted. There are wonderful views of Seattle, too. The major draw for tourists is the chance to see
the unique floating homes that line the shores of the lake. Popularized in the public's imagination by
Sleepless in Seattle the houses that line the eastern and western shores are a sight to behold.
Museum of Flight
Boeing is a large presence to say the least in Seattle and Washington State. This company is
prominently featured in the Museum of Flight along with Aerocars, Lockheed drones, a British
Airways Concorde and so much more. Kids will delight in the aircraft on display and adults will be
made to feel like children due to the large scale displays. This museum is a true Seattle treasure. If
you still seek more aircraft and want to see manufacturing in motion a short drive from Seattle
northward to Everett can mean touring the Boeing facility, which is the world's largest building by
volume. This 90 minute tour will expose visitors to some classic planes like the 747 and the new 787
Dreamliner.
These are considered by many to be the Top 10 Things to Do in Seattle, but every visitor is unique.
There is so much more waiting to be discovered: Queen Anne's architecture, Fremont's funky
vintage and antique stores, the professional sports, concerts, hiking, fishing and boating. Seattle is
alive with something for everyone. Make the Emerald City a destination for your family and see how
many of these top 10 things you can do in Seattle!
