2. Working at Heights: Things to Consider
Nowadays, the
structures and official
places are created
multi leveled. Working
at heights is now a
necessity. The rate of
fall from height
throughout working
hours is 25% annually.
In UK alone several
death accidents and
injuries occur every
year.
Work at Height Regulations 2005 was introduced to reduce accidents
of fall from heights. In year 2007, some modifications in the rules
were done. The working at height rule and regulations include limited
risk assessment, planning, supervising, inspection, and record-keeping.
A number of new equipments were invented to reduce the
falling accidents. Aside from these things, there are safety measures
which will help you keep safe when working at heights.
Knowledge of Work
Worker should be knowledgeable of what he is going to do because
without having knowledge, there will be a lot of difficulty in doing the
task. This includes information about all necessary things of work &
then applies them to a particular task. Therefore, knowledge of work
is necessary.
Height Safety Equipments
These are special equipments which help the users do their work with
proper protection. These equipments have two types: general height
safety and fall arrest system. Fall arrest system is a type of
equipment which has full body harness, connecting devices between
the harness and the anchorage point. This keeps the worker in an
upright position whenever he falls. Personal fall arrest system is also
available.
3. Fall Restraint
Fall Restraint systems are used to provide fall protection. When the
worker falls, this prevents him from reaching the fall area. Fall
restraint systems are the major equipments in various heights safety
equipments and they are the most commonly used products. A fall
restraint covers the whole body and it is worn on the top of the
clothing. Its length prevents the worker to fall from height and thus
decreases the risk of accidents.
Working at Heights & Fall Protection Training
Accidents can occur anytime when working at heights, so training the
workers and staff on how to work at heights is a necessity. Workers
can protect themselves if they are properly trained. Under the
training course, they will learn how to work at heights, and how to
protect themselves from injury.
Equipment Access
The workers can reach at heights but the next important thing is to
conveniently access items. When you need to reach construction
items then reliable elevated platform and scaffolds are better options
to choose than a typical ladder as these equipments minimize the risk
of accidents.
