Name of project: Lotus Hotel Location: Lingang District, Shanghai, China Services provided by Atkins: Architecture and landscape design What: A low rise 355 room 5 star business and resort hotel, located on an island in perfectly circular lake in Lin Gang new town, Shanghai. The buildings proximity to Shanghai’s international airport and its lakeside location means the building would be clearly seen by visitors arriving by plane. The Atkins solution: The 3 dimensional design superimposes an ideal natural form of a 5 leafed lotus flower on the irregularly shaped island. Each of the ‘petals’ contains either wings of hotel rooms or guest facilities. The main lobby area is at the centre of the lotus, marked with a low glazed dome. This central area connects each of the 3 storey wings of hotel rooms with the conference, banqueting, spa and recreational spaces. Within each of the hotel wings the curving form allows a central atrium garden to bring natural light into the centre of each of the plan. Another international competition win by our Shanghai design team. The 5 star hotel project will be the first completed building on a new island in an artificial lake – the centre piece of a the new port city of Lingang, Shanghai. The project uses an organic plan form to create an efficient plan form with rooms arranged in each of the leaf forms. These leaf forms challenge the typical hotel layout plan by introducing atrium gardens as the central part of each leaf form. Due to height restrictions from the international airport a taller building was not possible. However the proximity of the airport means that the building will be visible to passengers arriving by plane at the airport.
Name of project: Xi’an Xianyang Airport Terminal, China Location: Xianyang, Xian, China Services provided by Atkins: Architecture and landscape design What: This is a new terminal for Xian airport in central China. The project will provide an additional 270,000 square meters area. When the airport expansion is complete the anticipated passenger volume will be 31 million per year. The Atkins solution: This competition winning design for the new terminal building suggests a connection to the traditional formality of traditional Chinese architectural. The 3 dimensional form is inspirited by architectural style of the Han and Tang dynasties, the sculptural roof rises, in symmetrical layers, towards a central axis.
Name of project: MSD (Modern Service Development) Tianjin, China Location: TEDA, Tianjin, China Services provided by Atkins: Architecture and Landscape design What: This is a mixed use development of mid rise 24 office and low rise retail buildings which will create a new public realm adjacent connecting the project to the centre of the new economic development zone in Tianjin. The Atkins solution: The office and retail buildings create a series of pedestrian routes and public squares across a site that is nearly 1.4 km long site. These routes cross existing roads to form a new pedestrian corridor. In addition to landscape squares our design solution includes the use substantial areas of vertical green walls, allowing the upper areas of the building to become part of the landscape design. This project is an international competition win against some of the leading international firms. The project is the largest architectural project win in our China offices and is on schedule to start construction this year. The key features of the project are the concepts of a connected multi-level pedestrian space that creates a new public realm in the city. These public spaces will be enlivened by the novel landscape concepts that suggest vertical as well as horizontal green surfaces. The vertical walls of green will contribute to the reducing the impact of this high density new development in urban design. We understand that they will be the highest and largest installation of vertical greenery in China and represent a design and technical milestone.
Name of project: Airbus A380 certification Location: United Kingdom, the Netherlands and UAE Services provided by Atkins: Overall project management and delivery of checkstress programme over four years What: Atkins conducted a certification analysis of the wing structure required for Airbus to comply with international air safety standards. The Atkins solution: In response to the innovative design of the A380, Atkins developed new certification methods to analyse the wing through flight cycle, in-service fatigue and damage tolerance. In particular, its size - the A380 is the largest passenger aircraft in the world with a wingspan almost the length of a football pitch - and its energy efficient design - the A380 burns 12% less fuel per seat than a comparable aircraft.
Name of project: Copenhagen Metro City Circle Line Location: Copenhagen, Denmark Services provided by Atkins: Rail engineering, Intelligent Transport Systems, transport planning What: Atkins provided rail engineering, intelligent transport systems and transport planning for one of Denmark’s biggest ever transport projects, it will link the city centre with outer districts and will contribute to solving the city’s road congestion. The Atkins solution: In a joint venture with Rambol, Atkins recommended the Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) system, which has never been used in Denmark before. CBTC will ensure greater safety and reliability for this vital urban metro and at the same time reduce the amount of equipment and maintenance required. When complete, it will represent one of the most advanced transport systems in the world.
Project Name: Capital Fort, Sofia Location: Sofia, Bulgaria Services provided: Multidiscipline concept design, architecture, landscape, structures and building services engineering. Project text: Originally inspired by the cathedral arches of Sofia, Atkins created the concept design for Fort Noks, a mixed used development in Bulgaria. A high rise tower and ‘L’ shaped low rise office building sit over a podium comprising a wide range of retail and conference facilities accessed through a grand atrium lobby. With some of the most spectacular views of Vitosha Mountain, the high rise office building reaches 135 metres high and is set to create a distinctive landmark in Sofia’s skyline. It will be visible to visitors driving in and out of the city centre and from the air as aircrafts approach Sofia International Airport. When completed it will be the tallest building in Bulgaria and the Balkans.
Name of project: European Rail Traffic Management System Location: Denmark Services provided by Atkins: Design and testing of ERTMS on the entire Danish rail network Client advisor for the implementation of ERTMS including specifications to the suppliers New Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) system for Copenhagen’s suburban rail network Denmark is the first country in Europe to introduce ERTMS on all railway lines What: Atkins is helping to deliver the most important combined upgrade in passenger and freight train services in Europe. The European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) is being implemented across 3200km of track on the Danish rail network. The project promises a radical improvement in safety, performance, and capacity, and opens up the possibility of running non-stop trains across all borders. The Atkins solution: ERTMS, European Rail Traffic Management System, will see on-board computers fitted to every train which receive and relay information via trackside radio beacons that communicate with a central control. This improves timetable reliability and offers capacity improvements because services can be run closer together. Safety is also a key feature as ERTMS includes an Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system which applies a train’s brakes automatically if it is danger of a potential collision.
Project name: Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Terminal Location: Swinoujscie, Poland Details: Atkins is overseeing the design and construction of a new £500m liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant by Polskie LNG in Swinoujscie, Poland. The facility is the first such installation in central Europe. The LNG terminal, due to open in 2014, will receive natural gas by sea from virtually any direction in the world, which will increase Poland’s energy security.
