Media regulations are enforced by governments to protect the public interest but also give governments control over the media. Some argue this allows governments to favor certain voices and limit freedom of expression. In response to a phone hacking scandal, some called for stricter regulations. The Independent Press Standards Organisation regulates magazines and newspapers in the UK, administering ethics codes and handling complaints. Controversial past magazine covers show risks of inappropriateness that should be avoided.
2. Media regulations
Media regulations is the control of mass media which is
enforced by governing bodies. It is in place in order to protect a
‘public interest’. The government use these regulations to limit
and control the media and what is being expressed/shown.
However, the governments cause issues and debates due to
many people thinking that the government use the control over
regulations to their own advantage. Many believe that the
government dislike influential, alternative or critical voices which
is why they limit the freedom of expression/information through
the media.
However, an opposite issue is the Leveson Enquiry. This was a
case involving the British press following the News International
phone hacking scandal. Many believed following this incident
that there should be stricter and more regulations put in place.
3. Organisation in charge of
regulations: IPSO
The Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) is one
organisation in charge of the regulations of the magazines and
newspaper industry. One role of the IPSO is to administer the
Editors’ Code of Practice. This code deals with issues such as
invasion of privacy, accuracy, intrusion into grief or shock and
harassment.
They also handle complaints and conduct their own
investigations into editorial standards and compliance.
4. Controversi
al examples
This magazine has received
criticism due to Demi Moore
being naked and posing for this
edition of Vanity Fair being
seven months pregnant.
This magazine was believed to
be inappropriate as the photo
was taken hours before John
Lennon was killed.
Rolling Stone magazine
received criticism for this edition
as Janet Jackson was posing
with a man holding her breasts.
Time magazine named Adolf
Hitler Person Of The Year' in
1938.
5. What have I learnt?
I have learnt that my magazine cover needs to be professional
and not inappropriate. Researching different controversial
covers has indicated to me what is deemed inappropriate.
In addition to this, it has gave me a better understanding of how
the media is regulated and the issues that have arisen from it
also.
