How To Create Backlinks

You've just developed a website that may or may not rival
apple.com in appearance but if nobody knows it is there, your
time, effort and money are all wasted.

The blueprint for getting traffic to your website and making money
is not difficult, but it is often overlooked when that great idea for
your website was conceived. Fortunately, you can work on the
formula at any time and that money pit may well turn out to be a money maker after all. Even
facebook.com had to start somewhere.

Many people think that backlinks are the solution to getting traffic and to a large extent this is
correct. First, however, you need to make sure you have covered all the basics. This includes
doing proper keyword research, optimizing your site around those keywords, ensuring your
site is set up to convert well, checking your tags, making sure your site loads quickly,
checking for page errors, titles and a number of other things.

There are some great free tools out there to help you with these tasks. Here are a couple of
them:

Google Adwords Keyword Tool will help you identify keywords to target.
Traffic Travis will help you make sure your pages are optimized.

Once your website is ready to accept visitors it is time to send them. There are many ways to
accomplish this but the most effective and long lasting way is to create backlinks.

Backlinks come in many varieties, each with their benefits and drawbacks. The right backlink
strategy can make the difference between a couple of sales a week and a steady income
stream.

Backlinks can be created for free. All you need is patience, know where to look, and very
importantly know what not to do so the search engines will be happy and give your website
the rankings it deserves.

The most desirable backlinks typically are the most time-consuming to obtain. Here are a few
examples of great ways to create backlinks for your website:

Blog Commenting

Blog commenting is very popular and a great source of backlinks. The process is
straightforward. Find a blog that is relevant to your website, find a post of interest, and post a
comment. It is important to avoid posting spammy comments or you risk having your
comments deleted, and potentially banned from blog networks such as Wordpress.

It is simple enough to avoid spammy commenting. Just look at the blog from the point of view
of the blogger. They have spent their time writing something of interest and are eager to get
recognition for their efforts. As a commenter you have an opportunity to acknowledge their
efforts by contributing to the conversation. Demonstrate that you have read the post and
expand on the content in some way.

While this technique is straightforward, it is not without it's challenges. First, finding relevant
blogs with sufficient authority to have an impact on your site can be problematic. Secondly,
even if you do find appropriate blogs and use acceptable commenting practices, you only run
about a 50/50 chance of your comments being approved. This can happen for a variety of
reasons including the blogger not accepting comments, the blogger not finding your
comments appropriate, or the blogger not reviewing their comments.

The process can be frustrating , as you never know if your time is being well spent. There are
tools available to help speed up the process. This Instant Backlink Magic review will give you
insight into how to overcome some of the downsides of blog commenting.

Directory Submissions

Directory Submissions are an essential part of any successful backlink building campaign,
especially if you are trying to compete in a highly competitive niche. A directory is a virtual
yellow pages and there are tens of thousands of them on the internet. Directories serve an
important function on the internet. They allow searchers to find categorized lists of websites.
Once again the process is straightforward. Find a directory, tell it what your website is about,
identify an appropriate category, and submit your site.

This technique also is not without its challenges. Although there are tens of thousands of
directories, many of them should be avoided. Webmasters of Directory sites are usually
concerned about the integrity of their own sites and institute a manual approval process so
they can screen out poor quality sites. This process contributes to their authority and in turn

Copyright 2012 backlinksjuice.com all rights reserved
provides valuable information to the search engines. The better the Directory site, the more
likely the chance of being placed on a waiting list for review. Sometimes you may only have to
wait a few hours, sometimes it could take months.

Some directories require payment to be listed or to be placed in a priority approval queue. As
you can imagine, search engines don't place any value on Directories who list sites based on
financial gain. As such, avoid these Directories.

Directories are not all alike. Some require short descriptions and long descriptions, some may
categorize sites differently, and some may have very unique criteria. Be prepared to have
several variations of your sites description available to accommodate the various
requirements. With such a large workload, many Directories automatically reject a website if
the submission is incomplete or incorrect.

There are tools available to automate the submission process. However ,with the exception of
a couple of products costing $5,000 or more, all automated directory submission software has
inherent flaws. It is not possible for this kind of software to identify the unique requirements of
each and every Directory. Therefore, the rejection rate tends to be very high.

The expensive software justify their price because they actually monitor every directory in
their database, update criteria as necessary, remove inactive directories, and add new ones.
However, unless you are in the SEO business, it is not likely worth the cost to purchase this
software.

Directory Submissions can be one of the most frustrating backlink building techniques due to
the rejection rate and wait time involved. With patience, though, the rewards make it
worthwhile.

Article Submissions

This is a powerful method of getting backlinks. You submit unique articles with quality content
to any one of hundreds of article directories. One popular one is EzineArticles.com but there
are many excellent ones.
As with Website Directories, not all Article Submission Directories are worth submitting to.
Once you learn how to write the articles to meet the standards of the service, your articles will
be published, giving you a backlink as well as a traffic source and potential exposure as a
subject matter expert.

The main challenge for many people using this approach is having to continuously come up
with fresh quality content. This can be very time consuming. Some people try to shortcut the
system and “spin” articles, or automatically rewrite articles for submission to different

Copyright 2012 backlinksjuice.com all rights reserved
directories. There are products out there that can do this with varying degrees of success.
Most products we've seen turn articles into gibberish. And then there is the dreaded
Copyscape issue. Even if you are the original author of an article, a copy that has not been
properly spun can be flagged by the search engines and your efforts are wasted or worse
your page or site can be de-indexed.

Backlinks - What not to do?

By now most webmasters have heard of Google
Panda. Panda is essentially a series of algorithm
changes designed to identify and lower rankings of
websites deemed to be low quality. One of the
ways they identify these sites is by analyzing their
backlinks and weed out shady, questionable link
building practices.

The latest triumph for Google was the recent
uncovering and de-indexing of a popular strategy called Homepage Pagerank Backlinks. This
strategy simply rented space on the homepages of websites with Pagerank to place
backlinks. Enterprising companies built networks of websites with Pagerank and offered
backlinks throughout their networks. Problem is, homepages have limited real estate and
when your link appears with hundreds or even thousands of other unrelated links Google gets
suspicious. They ended up de-indexing entire networks of websites and as a result the
backlinks that were being rented to rank all the websites disappeared, effectively penalizing
many of those websites.

This was a serious defeat for the SEO community as this method was the “in” strategy for the
last year or so. A great video summarizing the situation can be found here: Homepage
Backlink Networks De-Indexed

There are many other backlink strategies that will either yield temporary results, no results, or
worse penalize websites. Here is a rundown of some of the more popular ones:

Link Farms

Link Farms are groups of websites that all link to each other through reciprocal links. Usually
what happens is many unrelated links end up on the same pages, and all of the participating
links offer no real value to the search engines. These practices are becoming easier to detect
by the search engines and there are cases where simply placing an outbound link to the farm
has resulted in the linking site being banned.

Copyright 2012 backlinksjuice.com all rights reserved
Spammy Links

These are links that are built from sites unrelated to the subject of a page, or are placed
inappropriately within a page. It also applies to excessive linking from blogs or social
networking sites. The source sites are relatively easy to detect by the search engines and
eventually they get de-indexed. To a webmaster the links end up coming and going,
potentially raising the suspicion of the search engines. One day a site has 1,000 links. A week
or two later they have 500 links. This is an unnatural occurrence that can get a website in
trouble. Wikipedia has an interesting article on the history of spam for those interested.

Forum Links

This is another very popular technique because many forums have high Pagerank due to the
nature of a forum – continuous fresh content. Forum links are links built by creating an
account on a forum, then placing the backlink usually within the signature of the account. This
can be done quickly and lists can be purchased for as little as $5 to identify high PR forums.
The problem with this method is, unless you plan on actively participating in the forum, you
are essentially piggybacking on the hard work done by the webmasters of these forums.
These types of backlinks end up disappearing as inactive accounts are deleted from the
forums. Once again a website runs the risk of the search engines detecting unusual increases
and decreases in backlinks and the website may get penalized for this.

Link Wheels
Link Wheels are backlinks created by linking one website to another, then linking the second
website to the third site, and so on until a wheel is formed. Each of the websites in the wheel
links back to your site. The theory on this approach is that link juice is passed to each of the
sites enhancing the value of all of the links. The downside of this approach is an obvious
footprint is left that the search engines are able to detect and once again an unnatural pattern
can be found, leading to penalties, bans, devaluation, etc.

Where Do You Turn?

All of these techniques have one thing in common – they add no
value to the search engines results. These and other practices
exist because they are easy to set up and sell by SEO companies
to unsuspecting webmasters. Often it is difficult or impossible to
identify whether these practices are being used until it is too late.
One day you are feeling great because your Google ranking is
solid and business is coming in. The next day you have lost your rank and business dries up.

There are ways to avoid all of the problems identified in this article: lost links, duplicate
content, high risk strategies, wasting money on useless software. If you create your links
properly in the first place you will never have to worry about being penalized. Depending on
the niche you are competing in, you may not even need very many links. The problem many
webmasters face, though, is the proper techniques are the ones that take the most time to
implement and creating even a small number of links can take a considerable chunk out of
your days, weeks, or even months. For many webmasters this is just not practical.

Fortunately there are ways to simplify even the safest techniques and reduce or eliminate
altogether the time needed to implement them. Follow this link to find out how to buy cheap
backlinks safely using a good linkbuilding service.

Here's to seeing you on page 1!

They allow searchers to find categorized lists of websites. Once again the process is straightforward. Find a directory, tell it what your website is about, identify an appropriate category, and submit your site. This technique also is not without its challenges. Although there are tens of thousands of directories, many of them should be avoided. Webmasters of Directory sites are usually concerned about the integrity of their own sites and institute a manual approval process so they can screen out poor quality sites. This process contributes to their authority and in turn Copyright 2012 backlinksjuice.com all rights reserved
  • 3. provides valuable information to the search engines. The better the Directory site, the more likely the chance of being placed on a waiting list for review. Sometimes you may only have to wait a few hours, sometimes it could take months. Some directories require payment to be listed or to be placed in a priority approval queue. As you can imagine, search engines don't place any value on Directories who list sites based on financial gain. As such, avoid these Directories. Directories are not all alike. Some require short descriptions and long descriptions, some may categorize sites differently, and some may have very unique criteria. Be prepared to have several variations of your sites description available to accommodate the various requirements. With such a large workload, many Directories automatically reject a website if the submission is incomplete or incorrect. There are tools available to automate the submission process. However ,with the exception of a couple of products costing $5,000 or more, all automated directory submission software has inherent flaws. It is not possible for this kind of software to identify the unique requirements of each and every Directory. Therefore, the rejection rate tends to be very high. The expensive software justify their price because they actually monitor every directory in their database, update criteria as necessary, remove inactive directories, and add new ones. However, unless you are in the SEO business, it is not likely worth the cost to purchase this software. Directory Submissions can be one of the most frustrating backlink building techniques due to the rejection rate and wait time involved. With patience, though, the rewards make it worthwhile. Article Submissions This is a powerful method of getting backlinks. You submit unique articles with quality content to any one of hundreds of article directories. One popular one is EzineArticles.com but there are many excellent ones. As with Website Directories, not all Article Submission Directories are worth submitting to. Once you learn how to write the articles to meet the standards of the service, your articles will be published, giving you a backlink as well as a traffic source and potential exposure as a subject matter expert. The main challenge for many people using this approach is having to continuously come up with fresh quality content. This can be very time consuming. Some people try to shortcut the system and “spin” articles, or automatically rewrite articles for submission to different Copyright 2012 backlinksjuice.com all rights reserved

And then there is the dreaded Copyscape issue. Even if you are the original author of an article, a copy that has not been properly spun can be flagged by the search engines and your efforts are wasted or worse your page or site can be de-indexed. Backlinks - What not to do? By now most webmasters have heard of Google Panda. Panda is essentially a series of algorithm changes designed to identify and lower rankings of websites deemed to be low quality. One of the ways they identify these sites is by analyzing their backlinks and weed out shady, questionable link building practices. The latest triumph for Google was the recent uncovering and de-indexing of a popular strategy called Homepage Pagerank Backlinks. This strategy simply rented space on the homepages of websites with Pagerank to place backlinks. Enterprising companies built networks of websites with Pagerank and offered backlinks throughout their networks. Problem is, homepages have limited real estate and when your link appears with hundreds or even thousands of other unrelated links Google gets suspicious. They ended up de-indexing entire networks of websites and as a result the backlinks that were being rented to rank all the websites disappeared, effectively penalizing many of those websites. This was a serious defeat for the SEO community as this method was the “in” strategy for the last year or so. A great video summarizing the situation can be found here: Homepage Backlink Networks De-Indexed There are many other backlink strategies that will either yield temporary results, no results, or worse penalize websites. Here is a rundown of some of the more popular ones: Link Farms Link Farms are groups of websites that all link to each other through reciprocal links. Usually what happens is many unrelated links end up on the same pages, and all of the participating links offer no real value to the search engines. These practices are becoming easier to detect by the search engines and there are cases where simply placing an outbound link to the farm has resulted in the linking site being banned. • 5. Spammy Links These are links that are built from sites unrelated to the subject of a page, or are placed inappropriately within a page. It also applies to excessive linking from blogs or social networking sites. The source sites are relatively easy to detect by the search engines and eventually they get de-indexed. To a webmaster the links end up coming and going, potentially raising the suspicion of the search engines. One day a site has 1,000 links. A week or two later they have 500 links. This is an unnatural occurrence that can get a website in trouble. Wikipedia has an interesting article on the history of spam for those interested. Forum Links This is another very popular technique because many forums have high Pagerank due to the nature of a forum – continuous fresh content. Forum links are links built by creating an account on a forum, then placing the backlink usually within the signature of the account. This can be done quickly and lists can be purchased for as little as $5 to identify high PR forums. The problem with this method is, unless you plan on actively participating in the forum, you are essentially piggybacking on the hard work done by the webmasters of these forums. These types of backlinks end up disappearing as inactive accounts are deleted from the forums. Once again a website runs the risk of the search engines detecting unusual increases and decreases in backlinks and the website may get penalized for this. Link Wheels Link Wheels are backlinks created by linking one website to another, then linking the second website to the third site, and so on until a wheel is formed. Each of the websites in the wheel links back to your site. The theory on this approach is that link juice is passed to each of the sites enhancing the value of all of the links. The downside of this approach is an obvious footprint is left that the search engines are able to detect and once again an unnatural pattern can be found, leading to penalties, bans, devaluation, etc. Copyright 2012 backlinksjuice.com all rights reserved
  • 6. Where Do You Turn? All of these techniques have one thing in common – they add no value to the search engines results. These and other practices exist because they are easy to set up and sell by SEO companies to unsuspecting webmasters. Often it is difficult or impossible to identify whether these practices are being used until it is too late. One day you are feeling great because your Google ranking is solid and business is coming in. The next day you have lost your rank and business dries up. There are ways to avoid all of the problems identified in this article: lost links, duplicate content, high risk strategies, wasting money on useless software. If you create your links properly in the first place you will never have to worry about being penalized. Depending on the niche you are competing in, you may not even need very many links. The problem many webmasters face, though, is the proper techniques are the ones that take the most time to implement and creating even a small number of links can take a considerable chunk out of your days, weeks, or even months. For many webmasters this is just not practical. Fortunately there are ways to simplify even the safest techniques and reduce or eliminate altogether the time needed to implement them.
