5. 1. Creating Treaties
 agreements between the US and another
country to promote peace and perhaps create
a military alliance
 These must be approved by the Senate.

 an agreement between the US and another
country that does not have to be approved by
the Senate
 Does not require Congress to abide by the
agreement.

7. 3. Appointing Ambassadors
 the President appoints these representatives of
the United States to other countries to maintain
good relations with that country
 ambassadors work to communicate between the
President and the foreign government
 embassies are where the ambassadors work
 ambassadors work to help US citizens traveling
and living abroad
 ambassadors must be approved by the Senate

 money, food, military aid, or other supplies
given to other countries
 helps build the US reputation and helps create
international friendships and good will.

 the President can use trade as a powerful tool of
persuasion since the US is largest market in the
world
 limiting trade with another nation could hurt
their economy
 trade sanctions punish a foreign nation by
reducing the amount the US will trade with them
 embargo punishes a foreign nation by
encouraging several countries to boycott trade
with the target nation

 being one of the most advanced militaries in
the world, US forces can be a major threat to
other countries
 this power must be wielded with caution and
should only be a last resort
