Holt Algebra 1
Solving Equations by
2-1 Adding or Subtracting

An equation is a mathematical statement that
        two expressions are equal.

A solution of an equation is a value of the
variable that makes the equation true.

To find solutions, isolate the variable. A
variable is isolated when it appears by itself
on one side of an equation, and not at all on
        the other side.

Holt Algebra 1
Solving Equations by
2-1 Adding or Subtracting

Isolate a variable by using inverse operations which
    "undo" operations on the variable.
An equation is like a balanced scale. To keep the
balance, perform the same operation on both sides.

Remember that subtracting is the same
as adding the opposite. When solving
equations, you will sometimes find it
easier to add an opposite to both sides
        instead of subtracting.

  • 5. Solving Equations by 2-1 Adding or Subtracting An equation is a mathematical statement that two expressions are equal. A solution of an equation is a value of the variable that makes the equation true. To find solutions, isolate the variable. A variable is isolated when it appears by itself on one side of an equation, and not at all on the other side. Holt Algebra 1
  • 6. Solving Equations by 2-1 Adding or Subtracting Isolate a variable by using inverse operations which "undo" operations on the variable. An equation is like a balanced scale. To keep the balance, perform the same operation on both sides. Inverse Operations Operation Inverse Operation Addition Subtraction Subtraction Addition Holt Algebra 1
  • 7. Solving Equations by 2-1 Adding or Subtracting Example 1A: Solving Equations by Using Addition Solve the equation. Check your answer. y – 8 = 24 +8 +8 Since 8 is subtracted from y, add 8 to y = 32 both sides to undo the subtraction. Check y – 8 = 24 To check your solution, 32 – 8 24 substitute 32 for y in the 24 24  original equation. Holt Algebra 1

  • 15. Solving Equations by 2-1 Adding or Subtracting Check It Out! Example 2b Solve the equation. Check your answer. –5 = k + 5 –5 – 5 Since 5 is added to k, subtract 5 from –10 = k both sides to undo the subtraction. Check –5 = k + 5 To check your solution, –5 –10 + 5 substitute –10 for k in the –5 –5  original equation. Holt Algebra 1
  • 16. Solving Equations by 2-1 Adding or Subtracting Check It Out! Example 2c Solve the equation. Check your answer. 6 + t = 14 –6 –6 Since 6 is added to t, subtract 6 from both sides to undo the addition. t= 8 Check 6 + t = 14 To check your solution, 6+8 14 substitute 8 for t in the 14 14  original equation. Holt Algebra 1
  • 17. Solving Equations by 2-1 Adding or Subtracting Remember that subtracting is the same as adding the opposite. When solving equations, you will sometimes find it easier to add an opposite to both sides instead of subtracting. Holt Algebra 1
  • 18. Solving Equations by 2-1 Adding or Subtracting Example 3: Solving Equations by Adding the Opposite 2 Solve – 5 + p = – . 11 11 + 5 + 5 5 Since – is added to p, add 5 11 11 11 11 to both sides. 3 p= 11 Check – 5 +p=– 2 11 11 To check your solution, 5 3 – 2 substitute 3 for p in the – + 11 11 11 11 original equation. 2 2 – – 11 11  Holt Algebra 1

Check –11 + x = 33 To check your –11 + 44 33 solution, substitute 44 for x in the original 33 33  equation. Holt Algebra 1
  • 22. Solving Equations by 2-1 Adding or Subtracting Example 4: Application Over 20 years, the population of a town decreased by 275 people to a population of 850. Write and solve an equation to find the original population. decrease in original population current minus is population population p – d = c p–d=c Write an equation to represent the relationship. p – 275 = 850 Since 275 is subtracted from p, add + 275 + 275 275 to both sides to undo the subtraction. p =1125 The original population was 1125 people. Holt Algebra 1
  • 23. Solving Equations by 2-1 Adding or Subtracting Check It Out! Example 4 A person's maximum heart rate is the highest rate, in beats per minute, that the person's heart should reach.
