     Achievement Scholarships
     Privately Funded Scholarships
     ROTC Scholarships
The majority of
students at Xavier
receive some form
of financial aid.
DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION
 Xavier does offer developmental education courses
for students who have met the minimum
admissions requirements, but who may still need a
  stronger base in the fundamentals
 Placement of students in developmental courses
are handled by the Office of Admissions and the
  College of Arts and Sciences
DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION
 A student’s placement is based on:
     SAT scores
     ACT scores
 Placement Tests in English, Math, and Reading

 Students take the computer based ACT COMPASS
    test
DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION
 Xavier COMPASS Tests are approximately 3 hours
(if a student is required to take all 3 portions)
 A majority of the incoming freshman at Xavier
choose to take the ACT, but both ACT and SAT are
  taken into admissions consideration
 A student can take either test as many times as they
would like. Admissions will be based on the higher of the
        2 tests.
DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION
 The average scores for accepted students:
     SAT- 480 critical reading, 470 math
 Any student who scored between 410-430 on the critical
reading portion would be required to take the English
          COMPASS
 Any student who scored 440 or less on the math portion would

be required to take the math COMPASS
 Any student who scored 430 on just the critical reading or a

combined less than 900 would be required to take the reading
          COMPASS
DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION
 The average ACT is a composite of 21
    (English, math, reading, science)
 Students with a 12 or less on the English portion of the ACT
are required to take the English COMPASS
 Students with a 19 or less on the math portion of the ACT are

required to take the math COMPASS
 Students with an 18 or less on the reading portion of the ACT

are required to take the reading COMPASS
While Xavier does
take standardized
test scores into
account there are
other factors that
play into an
admission decision.
COMMUNITY EDUCATION
 Most of Xavier University students are majoring
in science and health related fields, so there
aren’t many opportunities offered for continuing
education, but they do help the community
  outreach programs.
 The university has established the Center for
Minority Health and Health Disparities Research
  and Education
COMMUNITY EDUCATION
 The Center for Minority Health and Health
Disparities along with local, regional, and national
partners seek to educate New Orleans residents in:
 Diabetes, heart disease, nutrition, men’s and women’s
        health, and cancer
COMMUNITY EDUCATION
 The CMHDRE is not solely funded by Xavier, part
of the endowment money does go towards the
operation of the facility as it is used for student and
    faculty research

 The center is a collaborative effort with the
University of Tennessee’s College of Pharmacy and
    Tulane University’s Cancer Center
COMMUNITY EDUCATION
 Other collaborations include:
 The Louisiana Office of Public Health
 This office has partnered with Xavier to help in the study of
            diabetes, prevention, and control

 The Louisiana Cancer Research Consortium
 The consortium is a continuous effort to allow the all of the
state research institutions to work together on cancer studies
“The Mission of the
Center for Health
and Health
Disparities
Research and
Education
(CMHDRE) is to
provide the
infrastructure that is
required to conduct
research and
provide clinical
experiential training
and community
outreach aimed at
eliminating health
disparities.”
EFFECTIVENESS
 The university has seen an influx of students post-
    Katrina

 The endowment has grown from 60M to almost
100M over the last 6 years

 The US Dept. of Education ranks Xavier in the top
producers of African American students that earn
degrees in biological and physical sciences
EFFECTIVENESS
 The Xavier College of Pharmacy sits as one of the
US’s top 3 producers of African American students
    in medical school placement

 Xavier has been ranked among the best 371
    Colleges by Princeton Review

 Xavier President Francis C. Norman has received
the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2006)
EFFECTIVENESS
 Notable alumni:
 Alvin Boute (1951)—founder of Indecorp, the largest Black owned
financial institution in the United States
 Alexis Herman (1969)—the first African American United States
Secretary of Labor, who also served as former director of the
White House Office of Public Liaison
 Regina Benjamin (1979)—United States Surgeon General and
first physician under the age of 40 to and first African American
woman to be named to the American Medical Association Board
    of Trustees
EFFECTIVENESS
 The June 3, 2004 issue of Black Issues in Higher Education
shows how HBCUs dominate the upper echelon in terms of
numbers of African American graduates per school for the
    2002-2003 academic year:
 Sixteen of the top 21 producers of African American
baccalaureates in biological and biomedical sciences were
HBCUs, including the entire top six (Xavier University of LA
(#1), Hampton University (#2), Howard University (#3), Morgan
State University (#4), Jackson State University (#5) and
      Tennessee State University (#6).
 The twelve top producers of African American baccalaureates in
the physical sciences, including #1 Xavier University of
      Louisiana, were all HBCUs.

Editor's Notes

  1. The motto Deo Adjuvenate Non Timendum translated is If God is with us, nothing is to be feared.
  2. St. Katherine’s mission was to make sure that an equal opportunity for education was given to Native Americans and African Americans. The money used to open Xavier was money that had been in her family for generations. Her family was more progressive than most in the south and made it their mission to educate the underrepresented. Information was gathered from Wikepedia:
  3. Historically Black Colleges and Universities are primarily in the southeastern portion of the state (Maryland down to Texas). These institutions were founded to provide opportunities to minorities who were primarily African American to provide education from a trade to the sciences. In 1965 the United States begin to set up initiatives to preserve the rich histories of these institutions.Information gathered from the Department of Education: http://www2.ed.gov/about/inits/list/whhbcu/edlite-index.html
  4. Xavier is nicknamed the Emerald City because of its green roofed buildings spread out throughout campus. The campus has rebuilt many of the buildings that were destroyed in Hurricane Katrina, the only building that is still severely damaged is the chapel. Information gathered from the Xavier University website: xula.edu
  5. After Hurricane Katrina Xavier’s administration building and main entrance were among the first to be re-built and repaired.
  6. Xavier does not offer early action but do offer early decision to incoming freshman. Unlike some other institutions early action can be deferred or rejected by the student. Xavier received 3,278 applications and offered admissions to 2,193 students. The retention rate for first time freshman was reported at 69% for the fall of 2009. The average ACT composite score was a 21 (20.9) and the average SAT with critical reading and math was a 950 (947).Information was gathered from the Xavier University Profile at: http://www.xula.edu/planningir/documents/profileReports/2009-10/Fast%20Facts%20about%20Xavier%202009.pdf
  7. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, the university boasted its largest freshman class. The campus had to close for the fall semester of 2005 and did not open until January 2006. The university expected to see a large drop in campus but more than half of the students returned to campus. The consortium students are part of national project that seeks to provide a more diverse population in business. It is a national effort that sponsors scholarships, grants and fellowships that was established in 1965.Information gathered from Xavier University and Consortium website: xula.edu and http://www.cgsm.org/about/index.asp
  8. Although the university was founded under the Roman Catholic faith more than 25% of students are not Catholic. First year live on is not required. Most students prefer to live on campus due to cost and convenience, 50% of the population lives on campus.
  9. The College of Arts and Sciences at fall 2009 had 2,483 students. The College of Pharmacy had 678 students and the Graduate School had 173 students. In the spring of 2009 Xavier awarded 353 bachelor’s degrees, 35 master’s degrees, 35 master’s degrees, and 147 Doctor of Pharmacy degrees. Information was gathered from the Xavier University website: xula.edu
  10. M.A.X. is a program that was designed by students to promote campus and community service. Students are introduced to a variety of activities to learn about their surrounding community as well as their global community. The Peer Dean Association is a group of students who volunteer their time to act as liaison for incoming freshman and transfer students. They help plan orientation and lead campus tour groups and visits.Men’s and women’s basketball are among the most popular on campus. All teams are affiliated with the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. The Commuter Student Association (CAS) is set up to help keep students who do not live on campus connected to what is happening at the institution. The most popular student organizations are the Greek social organizations, the campus is home to 8 out of the 9 nationally recognized historically black Greek societies.Information gathered from Xavier University website: xula.edu
  11. Jade Young was crowned Miss Xavier earlier this year. Jade will represent the university for the upcoming year at campus events as well as compete for Miss HBCU. Below is a great article about Jade and the adversity she has faced before getting to the crown.http://www.xavierherald.com/news/not-a-typical-miss-xu-young-is-on-a-mission-1.1769898

  16. In the College of Arts & Sciences the student teacher ratio is 13:1. In the College of Pharmacy the student teacher ratio is 10:1The Diaspora in segregated Louisiana grant was $30,000. The grant allowed the history department and its students to search for interviews and pictures of the Africana groups that were splintered throughout the state for the last 100+ years.Recovery and Preservation of Archives was a $25,000 grant given to Xavier from the federal government. The library at the university is home to many historical artifacts from slavery, war, and state history. The money allowed the university the means to save many of these artifacts that had suffered damage during the hurricaneThe Garifuna Project was a $25,800 grant that allowed the university to research the Spanish speaking Afro-Latin culture in New Orleans. The Garifuna are a very small population of the city and are becoming harder and harder to find. The university would has been interviewing and documenting anything that will help to preserve this culture.Information collected from the Xavier University website ,the American school search and the Social Grant website: xula.eduhttp://www.american-school-search.com/faculty/xavier-university-of-louisianahttp://www.grantsocial.com/grants/neh/institution/Xavier+University+of+Louisiana

  19. Francis C. Norman was appointed president of Xavier University on June 26th 1968. He is the first and only president the university has had to date. His appointment came after the Pennsylvania Order of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament decided that the state of Louisiana needed its own Order. Dr. Norman is the longest presiding president of a college or university in the United States. He received his B.A. from Xavier and was the first African American to graduate from the Loyola University School of Law. His career at Xavier started in 1957 as the dean of men. Information gathered from the Xavier University website and the NPR website:Xula.eduhttp://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5160889
  20. The Board of Trustees rotates and will see different members that are not necessarily clergy. Most of the members are laymen and laywomen who are not affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church.
  21. A majority of monies come from donors as Xavier does not receive financial support from the Roman Catholic Church.
  22. Xavier is running about middle of the road in comparison with the other universities in the area. Most of the universities in the New Orleans Area are private which explains the high cost of tuition.
  23. Scholarships range from directly from the endowment, to students in financial need, to ROTC scholarships. The university has Air Force, Navy, and Army ROTC programs that it shares with other local universities.
  24. 60% of the students at Xavier receive the Federal Aid Grant which averages about $4,699.53% of the students receive state and local grant money which averages about $3,109.55% of the students receive institutional grant aid which averages $6,982.67% of the students receive aid in the form of student loans with an average of $8,468.(averages are per student)Information gathered from: http://www.stateuniversity.com/universities/LA/Xavier_University_of_Louisiana.html
  25. All incoming freshman are required to take the COMPASS test if their SAT or ACT score is deemed minimal. The SAT and ACT requirement vary based on which college the student would like to be a part of. Most student will begin in the College of Arts and Sciences if they do not meet the requirements of another.
  26. The COMPASS is not a pass or fail type of test. The test is primarily set up to factor where a student should be placed after admissions.
  27. The COMPASS test is also taken by transfer students who have less than 60 hours of college coursework credit. Students who would like to enroll in honors courses must also take the COMPASS test for eligibility.
  28. Most students who apply at Xavier choose to take the ACT over the SAT. It appears to be a state trend with other universities in the area reporting the same information. Because there are other factors that play in to admissions the test score is only part of the process and in some cases if a student meets the state SAT minimums and have an excellent record they could still be admitted. For students who score 330 on the SAT critical reading are placed in ENGL 0990. ENGL 0990 is described as preparatory English, that prepares a student for expository writing and revision. It is a 3 hour non-degree credit course that requires a student to have individual tutoring in the Writing Center. A student who does not COMPASS test out of the math portion will be required to tak MATH 0990. MATH 0990 is a 3 hours of non degree credit. The course is described as a preparation course for college mathematics that includes: Signed numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages; linear equations and inequalities, geometric problems involving area and perimeter of basic figures; operations with algebraic expressions; polynomials, simultaneous equations, factoring, radical expressions; operations with complex numbers; quadratic equations; graphing and basic Cartesian geometry. Students who do not test out of the reading COMPASS will be placed in RDNG 0992. RDNG 0992 is also 3 hours of none degree course work designed to teach students basic reading/study skills. This course is designed to provide a review of basic skills, reading and vocabulary strategies and study skills necessary for success in college.
