3. Who We Are…
HISTORY
The National Black MBA Association was created in 1970 by a group of
MBA candidates from the University of Chicago. Their mission was to
establish a premier organization for African-American students and
professionals to network and enhance their professional careers. As a
result of their commitment, hard work and dedication, the Association has
established 45 professional chapters, 27 collegiate chapters, and one
international chapter in Toronto, Canada.
In 1976, visionary African-American MBA professionals founded the "Black
MBA Association of Washington, D.C." This group became a member of
the National Black MBA Association, Inc. (NBMBAA) in 1982. Today, the
Washington, D.C. Chapter has a membership of more than 800, and is the
second largest chapter of the Association.

On behalf of The National Black MBA Association, Inc. -
Washington DC Chapter, I would like to thank you for
attending our 27th Annual Scholarship & Awards Gala.
Tonight, we take a moment to recognize our Leaders of
Tomorrow, undergraduate and graduate scholarship
recipients as they have "Powered Up Their Path to Success"
through academic achievement. With the support of our
corporate and collaborative partners, we will be providing them with
scholarship awards valued at more than $100,000. We also pause to
recognize our award recipients for the commitment they have shown to
the Chapter and Washington, D.C. community this year.
In addition to honoring our scholarship and award recipients, we also take
this opportunity to celebrate another successful year for the Washington
DC Chapter. In 2011, we have grown the membership by 45%, and we
now have more than 800 financial members. The Washington DC Chapter
was also recognized at the 2011 Conference in Atlanta, GA for its
programming related to the Career Channel. This would not have been
possible without the support of our members and corporate partners, and
we look forward to working with you for a successful 2012.

7. Mistress of Ceremonies: Taylor Thomas
Taylor Thomas is the local News Anchor for
the Steve Harvey Morning Show on 96.3
WHUR. Taylor is a veteran news journalist
with over 15 years of experience delivering
news that matters. In 2003, Taylor Thomas
joined the Award Winning WHUR News
Department. She wears several hats at
WHUR including producer/host of “Let’s Talk
Money” on WHUR World HD2, host of “PML- People, Money & Life” on
WHUR Voices Sirius XM Channel 141, News Reporter for WHUR World’s “Mix
Show” and she’s also the community reporter for WHUR’s Weekend Haps
program with Tony Richards.
Over the last decade, Taylor has traveled the country, bringing viewers
the latest information from political conventions & elections to natural
disasters like the historic flooding of New Orleans.
Taylor Thomas played a key role in reporting the September 11th attacks
as it unfolded for listeners in Washington, D.C. and 32 other national
markets. Following that tragic day, she returned home to Maryland to be
with her family.
Taylor Thomas is a graduate from the University of Maryland at College
Park with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Speech Communication and a
minor in Radio, Television and Film. She is dedicated to uplifting and
educating others about health, money and social issues.

Jeff Johnson is a Washington, DC-based,
award-winning investigative journalist, social
activist, and political commentator.
From his celebrated conversations with
marquee world figures in politics, business
and entertainment, his grassroots work to
inspire the next generation of leaders, his
BET specials, and weekly commentaries on
the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner
Morning Show, to his work as CEO of Jeff’s
Nation, LLC, Johnson has established himself
as an authentic voice for change and a trailblazing social entrepreneur.
As a MSNBC contributor and White House correspondent for The Grio, an African
American web site owned by NBC, Johnson covers important issues facing the nation.
Johnson has spent the last decade merging the worlds of politics and popular culture,
including formerly serving as senior advisor for Media and Youth Outreach for People for
the American Way, national director of the Youth & College division of the NAACP, and
as vice president of the Russell Simmons Hip Hop Summit Action Network (HSAN).
The only US reporter to receive an exclusive post-inauguration interview with Ellen
Johnson-Sirleaf, Africa’s first elected female head of state and Liberia’s first elected
female president, Johnson is also one of only two news correspondents to receive an
exclusive interview with Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir, who has not granted
interviews with US media outlets for thirteen years.
In 2008, Johnson received the NABJ Salute to Excellence Award for BET’s Life & Death in
Darfur, Jeff Johnson Reports series. He regularly contributes commentary and analysis
about issues related to race, politics, popular culture and socio-economics for news
broadcasts and publications, such as MSNBC’s Dayside and Hardball with Chris
Matthews, CNN’s Headline News, CNN’s International, Larry King Live, the FOX News
Channel, Huffington Post, CNN.com, theRoot.com, EbonyJet.com, and Upscale
magazine.
Johnson is the one of 30 young leaders from Europe and North America selected by the
British Council to be a part of its Transatlantic 2020 team. This collective has inaugurated
a new international dialogue to reinvigorate traditional alliances and mend transatlantic
rifts.
On September 15, 2009, Jeff Johnson released his first book—Everything I’m Not Made

Scholarship Recipients
Omar Saibou ($1,000)
Omar is a 2011 graduate at McKinley Technology High School and lives in
Washington, DC. He would like to become a sports broadcaster. Omar
served as LOT Senior Class Managing Director for 2010-2011.
Imani Yvonne Charles ($750)
Imani is a 2011 graduate of Wilson High School, located in Washington,
D.C. She is currently a freshman at Albright College. Imani's life philosophy
is “Life is whatever you make of it, and if you spend your time sitting
around and watching it fly by, then you will have a lifetime of regrets.”
Imani served as LOT Chief Financial Officer for 2010-2011.

About Leaders of Tomorrow
For 20 years, National Black MBA Association members have been
mentoring high school students all across the country - helping them
integrate professional development into their lifestyles, prepare for
college, learn how to effectively network, and above all, give back to
their communities, and raise their level of expectation.
Mentors work with 8-12 grade students in a systematic way to build the
competencies necessary for success through local chapter programming,
the national conference, and the Leaders of Tomorrow National Business
Case Competition.

Scholarship Recipients
Crystal Moore ($2,500 Graduate Scholarship)
A native of Collinsville, MS, Crystal is a First-Year MBA Candidate at Duke
University's Fuqua School of Business. Prior to business school, she participated in
the ProInspire Fellowship Program; a co-hort of outstanding business professionals
who spend one year working in a strategic or analytical role at a nonprofit or
public-sector organization in Washington D.C. As a ProInspire Fellow for the
District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), she conducted the necessary analysis
to make data-driven decisions that forward the districts’ reform efforts of
becoming the preeminent urban school system in America. Crystal started her
career as a Corporate Finance Analyst with Accenture in Washington, DC. There
she worked in the Health and Public Service Operating Group managing
consulting and outsourcing contracts and business units for public sector clients.
Crystal graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business
Administration-Finance from Xavier University of Louisiana in 2007; where she
served as Student Body President and was the recipient of the Saint Katharine
Drexel Award, the University’s highest student honor. She has been a passionate
volunteer and member of several non-profit organizations throughout her career,
including College Summit, Junior League of Northern Virginia, and Greater DC
Cares. Additionally, she currently serves as the Chair for Xavier University’s Young
Alumni Board.
Dionna Ross ($1,500 Undergraduate Scholarship)
Dionna is a freshman at Delaware State University (DSU), majoring in General
Management. She is a Washington DC native. She recently made the Honors
Program at DSU. Her hobbies are singing, shopping, dancing and spending time
with family and friends.
Janae Nelson ($1,000 Undergraduate Scholarship)
Janae is originally from Takoma Park, MD, and she is a freshman at the University
of Maryland, College Park. While her major is currently undecided, she is
considering double majoring in English and Business. She is a member of the
Maryland Filmmakers Club, the Black Student Union, and the Black Business
Association. Her hobbies include reading and writing short stories, poems, and
songs.
13. George Washington University/NBMBAA-DC
Scholarship Recipients
Emma Fofanah - Class of 2013
Emma is a full-time MBA student focusing on international business and finance.
A native of Sierra Leone, she plans to work in the field of economic
development; particularly in finance and private sector development. Prior to
school, Ms. Fofanah was a Sustainability Analyst at Calvert Investments
implementing Environmental Social and Governance investment risk analysis and
advocating for corporate social responsibility. She started her career at
RiskMetrics Group (formerly ISS) as an account manager and was promoted to
the ESG analytics division as a research analyst and later, senior research
analyst. Ms. Fofanah earned a BS in business administration from Longwood
University in Virginia.
Joy Mangum - Class of 2013
Joy is a first-year Global MBA candidate in the George Washington University
School of Business. Joy, a graduate of the University of Virginia, began her
career at Burson-Marsteller LLC, a leading global public relations and
communications firm. During her tenure, Joy served as a human
resources generalist with an emphasis on training and development, benefits
administration and employee relations. She also specialized in high volume
recruitment to source and hire diverse, quality talent in public affairs, media
relations (traditional and digital), healthcare PR, advertising, crisis management
and grassroots communications. Joy's long-term goal is to open a consultancy
devoted to best practices in business with a focus on human resources
management and diversity and inclusion.
Bilal Pasha - Class of 2013
Bilal comes to George Washington School of Business after working for T. Rowe
Price Retirement Plan Services for the past three years. He was responsible for
selling small-market corporate retirement plans and developing a pricing and
sales strategy for large and mega-market retirement plans sales. He has a
degree in financial economics from the University of Maryland. Prior to joining T.
Rowe Price, Bilal worked as a financial adviser for Morgan Stanley. He grew up
Silver Spring, Md. He has lived in Massachusetts, California and Florida, and has
spent the past four years in Baltimore.

Rene'e Rufen-Blanchette - Class of 2013
Rene'e is currently a first year MBA student at the George Washington
University studying International Business and Community Development.
Prior to pursuing her MBA degree she was a Branch Manager for CHASE
bank in New York City and was in this position for the past 3 years. She has
worked in retail banking for the past 6 years and was promoted multiple
times into different management positions. After completing her BS in
Economics at SUNY Oneonta, Renee started her career in banking with a
focus on community outreach and was able to develop and foster
multiple finance programs into low-income neighborhoods. She also
worked closely with Senior Management to develop sales and marketing
strategies to increase branch presence in local communities. Renee has
a passion for community outreach, micro-financing, and corporate
philanthropy. When she is not volunteering as a mentor for Sponsors for
Educational Opportunity (SEO) or for different micro-lending projects, she
is spending quality time with her family and friends, looking for the next
travel adventure and the best place to have dessert!!

Alpha Ba
Alpha is a first year MBA candidate at Howard University concentrating in
Finance and Supply Chain management. He is a graduate of Drexel University's
mechanical engineering program. He is also a recent graduate of Howard
University School of Law and just passed the bar exam, on his first try, a few
weeks ago. Alpha is from Landover, MD and enjoys playing sports, reading, and
meeting new people. After completing his MBA program, he intends to raise a
fund to buy and grow a technology company.

Scholarship Recipients
Datrianna Meeks
Datrianna is a senior marketing major at Howard University, originally from
Chicago, IL. She has held many internship positions, including working for
the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Deloitte Consulting LLP, and
LivingSocial. On campus, she is an active member of The International
Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi, a professional business fraternity, and she is
also a resident assistant. Upon graduation, Datrianna will go on to work as
a Federal Business Analyst for Deloitte Consulting in Washington, D.C. After
gaining work experience she plans to pursue an MBA and continue to
work in the consulting field, perhaps even open her own company. In her
free time, she enjoys blogging, photography and reading.
Kristin Tellis
Voted as one of the “Top 25 Up & Comers under the Age of 25” in the
Category of Academics by the Power Broker Magazine, Kristin is
passionate about her studies. Ms. Tellis attends Howard University where
she is an honors student in the Walter H. Annenberg Honors Program
studying Advertising and Legal Communications. On campus, she is a part
of Women as Change Agents, a Student Ambassador for the Office of
Admissions, the Co-Coordinator for the Student Council Square One
Mentoring Program, and the Student Coordinator for Howard University
Elect Her- Campus Women Win. Elect Her is a five hour training that
teaches young women leaders how to run an effective student
government campaign and win. She has also attended Howard University
Alternative Spring Break Chicago to advocate for gun violence
awareness. In her spare time, Kristin enjoys learning sign language. After
graduating from Howard University, Kristin would like to work for a Fortune
500 company and attend law school. Within the last couple of years, she
has served as President of her Junior Class, and Student Body President of
Gibbs High School, located in her hometown of St. Petersburg, Florida.

In 2011, Capital One partnered with several NBMBAA Chapters
(Washington DC, New York, Dallas-Fort Worth and Richmond) and
supported the 10th Annual NBMBAA National Case Competition.
Capital One partnered with the Washington DC Chapter for the following
events:
March Madness - Participated as the Title Partner for this networking event
in collaboration with National Association of Black Accountants. The
event has held at Bailey's in Arlington, VA.
Pre-Conference Career Expo - Participated as an exhibiting employer.
Corporate Partner Spotlight - Participated as the Title Partner for this
networking and recruiting event hosted at Clyde's of Gallery Place.
Scholarship & Awards Gala - Participated as a Bronze Table Partner for the
2011 event.
Scholarship Program - Awarded two (2) scholarships to Howard University
students as part of a pilot scholarship program. In its first year, they
received 36 applications.
18. Coalition of the Year
National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) - Alumni Extension
Offering networking, development, and volunteer opportunities to
professionals in Washington, DC, Suburban Maryland and Northern
Virginia, we are the National Society of Black Engineers Alumni Extension
Washington DC Metropolitan Area Chapter… in short we call ourselves
NSBE-AEDC.
We are dedicated to the advancement of minority engineers and
technical professionals in industry; promoting as well as retaining the
number of students currently pursing engineering degrees at the
undergraduate and graduate level; stimulating and developing student
interest in science and engineering; while also supporting NSBE nationally
and locally though its DC Metropolitan student chapters.
NSBE, not solely benefiting engineers nor solely comprised of engineers, is
the premier organization of its kind in the region. This is a place where
professionals meet to build lasting friendships, share big ideas and invest in
the future of science, engineering, and technology. Membership in NSBE-
AEDC helps one improve their career, develop leadership abilities, build a
network, and give back to the local community!
This is done via the chapter's projects and programs that are
implemented and executed throughout the year. Such projects and
programs include Professional Development Seminars, Technical
Roundtable Discussions, Technical Trainings, Conferences, Career
Placement Services, Collegiate and High School Mentoring, SAT and
College Preparatory Workshops, Community Outreach, as well as our
Scholarship Programs.

Howard University School of Business
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Howard University School of Business is to provide a comprehensive
business and management education to students of high academic potential, with
particular emphasis upon the provision of educational opportunities for promising
African-American students who may not otherwise have an opportunity to acquire an
education of the type provided at Howard University. Further, the School is dedicated to
attracting and sustaining a cadre of faculty who are, through their teaching and
research, committed to the development of distinguished graduates and to the quest for
solutions to business and management problems in the United States and throughout the
world.
VISION STATEMENT
The vision of the School of Business is to be recognized for excellence in providing a
superior global business management education and in graduating potential leaders
with outstanding abilities, motivation, and creativity. The School of Business seeks to
become a world leader in the development of new knowledge and solutions to major
business and social problems.
Community Service Award
Dania Jolley
Dania M. Jolley is the Membership Chair of the National Black MBA Association (Masters
in Business Administration) DC Chapter and has been a consistent volunteer at all schools
her now 8th grader has attended. Her most recent participation was the notable school
auction and dance. At his previous schools, she held roles of Auction Committee
member for two years and Co-Chair for the School Auction. Volunteering at his schools is
an important role in her and her son’s life, as demonstrated by being the current Alice
Deal MS, PTA Board, Vice-President of Ways & Means. Dania has held a myriad of
executive level volunteer positions supporting educational campaigns, to include
Hampton University Ogre Phi Ogre Reunion Committee, Benjamin Banneker High School
30th Reunion Committee and Vice President of Seeking Self Success2, Scholarship
Program. Promoting education is a priority for Dania and she has committed to
encouraging future generations to pursue their dreams with a solid educational
foundation. Dania has superb leadership and organizational skills that any group would
profit from having on their team.
20. Entrepreneur of the Year Award
Dr. Nicole Cutts
For over 12 years Nicole Cutts, Ph.D., licensed Clinical Psychologist, Success
Coach, Author and Organizational Consultant has been inspiring and
empowering people to achieve a more balanced and successful lifestyle. Dr.
Cutts has consulted with and trained executives, managers, and teams at
Fortune 500 Companies, Federal Government Agencies, and Non-Profit
Organizations. As a master facilitator and Success Coach, she helps people
create an exceptional life by honoring their mind, body, and spirit so they can
experience joy, passion, meaning, and ultimate success in their work.
Dr. Cutts is a featured writer on the Walter Kaitz Foundation website and has
been a contributing writer for Identity Television, The Next Level, and The Diversity
Channel, where she was also the Senior Features Editor. She has appeared on
BET’s The Center, the BBC, Roland S. Martin’s Urban Business Roundtable and
various radio and TV programs. She has co-authored and published several
articles and stories in scientific and literary journals. Her writings on Corporate
Wellness, Success Coaching, and Diversity have appeared on several Chamber
of Commerce and business websites. She formerly sat on the D.C. Bar
Association Lawyer’s Counseling Committee and the Board of the Student
Support Center. She is a former faculty member of The University of MD-Baltimore
County where she taught in the Women’s Studies Dept.
An avid yoga student, her dedication to well-being and belief that well-being
should extend to the work-place motivated her to start Cutts Consulting, LLC in
2002 and Vision Quest Retreats in 2009. Since then she has been helping
organizations and individuals clarify and achieve their Vision of Success by
utilizing a combination of lessons drawn from her years of study and experience
as a psychologist and working professional. She believes one can be productive
while finding joy in their work.
When she speaks to people about following their dreams and “living from the
inside out” she is drawing on her experience, also having forged a career as an
artist, whose work has been exhibited widely and featured in national magazines

Dr. Cutts, received her Ph.D. from the California School of Professional
Psychology- LA, where her emphasis of study was Multicultural Community
Clinical Psychology. She also holds a B.S. in Psychology from Howard University.

President’s Award
Candice Charles
Candice Charles is a current Executive Board member of the National
Black MBA Association, Washington, D.C. Chapter and serves as the Vice
President of Membership. With her leadership, the Chapter's has grown
from 555 to 805 (45% increase). She has been an active member of the
organization since 2007 when she joined as a student member. Candice is
also a mentor in the Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) program.
Candice has over 15 years of experience encompassing roles in
organizational development, event management, process improvement,
executive management support and recruiting. She is also a Notary cont.
Public in the Commonwealth of Virginia and has worked in the travel,
education, government support & defense industries.
Prior to becoming a Senior Program Planning & Control Analyst in the
Acquisition Program Management Group at Alion Science & Technology,
she contributed to initiatives and programs that recruit and retain diverse
employees at Raytheon Company. She also became a Six Sigma
Specialist and was appointed as the Mid-Atlantic Regional Vice President
of an Employee Resource Group (ERG).
Candice holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Howard
University and an MBA with a Specialization in Human Resources
Management from Strayer University. She is also a member of the Society
of Human Resources Management (SHRM), the National Association for
African Americans in Human Resources (NAAAHR), as well as several other
professional organizations and has served on the board of the Howard
University Alumni Association Club of Northern Virginia where she resides.
