6. CANADA Although Canada was not the first Country to legalize same gender marriage, it is certainly regarded as one of the leading countries in same-sex marriage policy.
7. “Marriage, for civil purposes, is the lawful union of two persons to the exclusion of all others.” -The Civil Marriage Act
8. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Where Canada’s approach seems fairly straightforward as the federal government extended the right for same gendered couples to marry nationwide, the federal government in the US has not done the same.
9. In some ways, same-sex marriage has become a celebrity cause, as many famous actors and musicians have joined to voice their opposition to laws that prohibit samegender marriage.
10. THE KINDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA Homosexuality is not legal this country, and often, severe consequences such as “imprisonment, corporal punishment, or death” (Letellier, 2005).
11. Saudi Arabia was one of fifty-seven countries that signed a counter-statement “that rejected that sexual orientation was a matter of genetic coding” and “said the effort threatened to undermine the international framework of human rights by trying to normalize pedophilia, among other acts” (MacFarquhar, 2008).
12. Conclusion Even Facebook recently announced that it has added “in a domestic partnership” and “in a civil union” to its relationship status options.
