- What is it about? – Different ways and strategies of recording, streaming, podcasting lectures, events and activities at university
- Who are we? – Dept. Social Learning // Computer and Information Services // University of Technology Graz What is our main aim? – Service of Technology Enhanced Learning for entire university to establish into teaching standards and curricula
- What is our the overall strategy? – Providing different services on platforms, connected to each other; using one window = PLE, Personal Learning Environment; web2.0 implemented; for multiple devices What are the important platforms at TU Graz? – TUGraz.online // TU Graz TeachCenter // TU Graz LearnLand plus Multiple Projects lead to multiple special services => all togther on PLE Where is the podacsting part located? – Podcasting Services embedded into this system, and own platform of streams (ePresence) as well as iTunesU
- How can we face this? – Offer tablet PCs, Interactive Pen Displays (Sympodium, Wacom …) or take a video Why should do so? – Advantages: Digital saved, using projector it can be seen from any place in the lecture room, lecturer always facing students
- What was done here? – Quick poll about usage of pen display versus chalkboard
- Which services do we provide in the course of recording? 1) Screening – using Camtasia and iShowU (Maybe Camtasia for Mac as well) – SINCE winterterm 2006 2) (Live) Streaming – using ePresence Webcasting system – SINCE winterterm 2008 3) Informal Individual Mobile (Live) Recordings – at Conferences, anywhere, quick & dirty 4) Professional Video Producing Team – SINCE winterterm 2009 Which outputs do we support? Classic ones iTunesU – Since winterterm 2009
- What is the model behind the multiple recording options? Provide podcasts as „usual“ and optimize this process Offer live streaming in order to make the attendance easier and to open for public Offer iTunes in order to open for new target groups, public relations … Main direction is to Open University for more transparency, more open resources
- What does the podacsting part looks like? Screening of display with audio (and video) All of them published on TU Graz TeachCenter and some special ones in iTunesU for public relations Several output formats ensure multiple device compatibility – mobile, iPhone as well as iPod RSS feed for the TUGTC and iTunesU distribution => real podcasts ;-)
- What does it take to record a lecture? Minimum Postprocessing and Publishing – whereas the postprocessing has been very optimized in the past Standard Screening software (wireless) Microphones Postprocessing and Publishing On demand Introduction and Schooling Assistance during Recording Pen display Taking Video
- Why should i record my lecture? Recordings are specially of use in case of process rich content – mathematics, physics … Have lectures, presentations saved for further useage: learning, multiple reuse for different reasons Save special events Offer to open community – open educational resources -> strategy

- Do students use it? A quarter checked all recordings (of one lecture) Over 40% checked some Only 2 % are disappointed with quality
- How do students use recordings? We did not find out an effect of leaving the lecture room because of recordings – quite contrary! 80% USE: Most of all as an additional content and for repetition of lecture 20% Not USE: No relevance for examination and did not knew! Didactics: Become recordings essential for examinations?!? // Better information about (poll was done in the beginning of recording)
- What does the streaming part looks like? Live Screening of display with audio and video directly on ePresence Additionally linked to TU Graz TeachCenter and some special ones published on iTunesU for public relations RSS feed for the TUGTC and iTunesU distribution => real podcasts ;-) Special Focus on Informal Streaming using Online Personal Accounts for distributing on Social Platforms
- How do we stream? Portable station of ePresence Server Camera & Microphones Informal with any camera (mobile, webcam …) and internet connection At this time it is a „point solution“ – einzellösung For it needs assistance the Man power resource is high

- Is it a successful service? This shows the recordings by terms The breakdown in winterterm 2008 was caused by the implementation of teh new service of streaming The request is getting stronger – have to find new ways of dealing with it

- Why informal way? For the taste of reality Best way of accidential reasons of recordings Very easy to handle with YouTube for public relations and open education approach TeacherTube = YouTube for Teaching and Learning efforts – videos may last longer than 3 min. We even used it for quick & dirty streaming of conference „EduCamp“ – 6 parrallel live-streams using USTREAM
- Why iTunes U? Very big community Best public relations Published on iTunes U AND on OWN platform twice : itunes.tugraz.at Second uni in Austria to do so; SINCE winter term 2009 Only recordings of special interest to the public

- Statistics: 320 files with 140 videos, 170 PDF + audio files .pdf: 168 .mp4: 104 .mov: 33 .mp3: 12 .m4v: 0 .m4a: 0 .aac: 0 Total Downloads: 55.000 .mp4: 17518 .mp3: 1000 .pdf: 30366 .mov: 5870 Partial Downloads: over 500.000 .mp4: 283761 .mp3: 1187 .pdf: 90362 .mov: 270951
- Which are the challanges left after 4 years of recording experience? Recording has still rising popularity – even stronger Service is limited by resources of man power and equipment Call for a more automated solution but not less quality Technical Problems have become very rarely Problems occur with personal behavior of person recorded Though it costs effort to do, recording has become trendy
- Are there any other problems left? Copyright still is an critical aspect in Austria Lecturers are scared to publish foreign content even if foreign source is named Recordings by students are not allowed per se – must be confirmed by lecturer: so it is better to record it professional
