3. What works ?
• Constructive alignment in health
• Appreciate group dynamics
• Find the common ground
• Focus on the core issues – build trust
• Finding the 18th camel….
4. The intended outcomes
of the “alliance
contract/workstream”
The evaluation regime
The outcomes are
developed first –
from these the
evaluation activities
are identified
Once an appropriate
evaluation regime is
developed, activities are
developed that will
reach those outcomes.
Health intervention
activities
What the providers do
directly links to the
desired outcomes. This
builds on what we
know about motivation
for activity in adults.

Constructive Alignment in Health …making sure
activities result in desired outcomes and are

5. Group dynamics
• Forming, norming, storming, and performing
• Define roles

keeping on track , minute keeping, sharing
open source, review of action lists
• Look for the “third side…”
Resources: “William Ury – The walk from “no” to “yes” TED talk
6. Common ground
• Shared values discussion
• Shared principles discussion
• Put all the issues on the table
• Agree the conflicts
• Initial focus on the “core” issues – recruitment,
retention, practice support – build trust
• Keep returning to the common ground
A man who left to his sons 17 camels,
The first he left half the camels, the second he left a third of the camels, and the youngest he left a ninth of the camels.
After he died the brothers entered into negotiation, 17 does not divide by 2, 3 or nine
so they sought advice from a wise old woman who said she had no answer but if would make them happy they could have her one camel.
The first son got 9 camels, the second 6 camels, and the youngest took his 2,
they had one left over which they gave to the old woman in gratitude for helping them solve their problem.
What we have to do is to step back from the situation we are in and try and find the 18th camel ….
