2. 2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
3. The social group that I have mainly tried to represent within my magazine is the audience that I am targeting. I created my magazine with an indie/alternative genre in mind, and therefore would aim to attract this type of social group. I have also represented age within this genre; the main feature artists that I have included throughout the magazine are young adults at age eighteen. The age of the group that I am aiming to target would be between seventeen and twenty-four. I feel that this aspect of the magazine would appeal to this age range as they can easily relate to the age of the artists that I chose to include.
4. I originally planned for both males and females to feel equally drawn to the magazine, however due to the fact that there is the dominance of female images, it seems more likely to appeal to a female audience. The costumes that I decided on compliment the relaxed, laid back attitude of the social group that I focused on and seem to reflect their lifestyle. The bands that I decided to include are those which link with the ‘indie’ genre, and those who I would be aiming to represent are more likely to have heard of them and to enjoy their music.
5. On the contents page, I tried to include features and articles which would appeal to them, and which again focused on the stereotypically laid back lifestyle which they indulge in. I included a ‘concert special’ as they would be likely to enjoy going to see bands live or going to festivals, so I thought that it would especially appeal to them.
6. Concert Special would appeal to the love of music and wanting the whole experience; music is very important to them Costumes are laid back and relatively casual Would be interested in festivals and the opportunity to see artists live
7. 3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
8. To give my magazine the best chance of being distributed to as large an audience as possible, I would look at larger media publishing institutions to allow this to happen. The institution which I believe may distribute my media product is IPC Media. This group publish the magazine ‘NME’, which is of a similar genre and style to mine. Therefore they would have experience with publications such as the one that I produced and may be more inclined to look further into publishing it. In order to fund the magazine to allow for it to be published, I would look at running various advertisements throughout the pages. These could include concert dates or information about concerts, or information about albums, music stores or merchandise. Running these types of adverts would allow me to keep the whole magazine relevant and centred around music.
