DC Campaign to Defeat Poverty Nearly one out of five District residents lives at or below the povertyline……<Washington Post>
Poverty and Inequality in DC One out of every three DC residents is low-income. That means they live below twice the federal poverty line, or roughly $35,000 for an adult living with two children. DC’s child poverty rate of 32 %is well above the national average of 18 %. About two-thirds of the children in the District’s public and public charter schools are eligible for a free or reduced-price lunch. Income inequality in the District is greater than in nearly every large city in the United States. Employment among African Americans and those with no more than a high school diploma has fallen to its lowest rate in 30 years. More than half of DC residents live in areas that lack access to health care. Residents of the poorest communities routinely go without needed treatment for mental illness and drug use, and suffer higher rates of chronic diseases such as diabetes and HIV/AIDS.
