Exploring the Safe Operating Space for Humanity1
The relatively stable environment of the Holocene, the current interglacial period that began about
10 000 years ago, allowed agriculture and complex societies, to develop and flourish.
However, since the industrial revolution, humans are effectively pushing the planet outside the
Holocene range of variability for many key Earth System processes. The Earth has entered a new
epoch, the Anthropocene, where humans constitute the dominant driver of change to the Earth
System.
The exponential growth of human activities is raising concern that further pressure on the Earth
System could destabilize critical biophysical systems and trigger abrupt or irreversible
environmental changes that would be deleterious or even catastrophic for human well-being.

Exemplo de Análise de Limites - Planetary Boundaries:
Exploring the Safe Operating Space for Humanity1
So far, science has provided warnings of planetary risks of crossing thresholds in the areas of climate
change and stratospheric ozone. However, the growing human pressure on the planet necessitates
attention to other biophysical processes that are of significance to the resilience of sub-systems of
Earth and the Earth System as a whole. Erosion of resilience manifests itself when long periods of
seemingly stable conditions are followed by periods of abrupt, non-linear change, reflected in
critical transitions from one stability domain to another when thresholds are crossed.

desenvolvimento
Visão de mundo
• Fazemos parte de um “todo” socioambiental
• Com crescentes interdependências entre suas
partes (limites, tecnologia, crescimento)
• A continuação do nosso desenvolvimento passa

CEOs are unequivocal in their belief that the global economy
is not on the right track—and that business is not doing
enough to address global sustainability challenges.
Growing recognition that even the success currently achieved
by the most advanced companies is happening within an
unsustainable system.
They see their companies stuck on a plateau of good
intentions, uncertain of the way to the summit.
Deeper understanding of how companies can drive
sustainability to competitive advantage. At its heart is a
different approach, moving beyond reactive, incremental
responses to external pressures and toward a new
understanding of sustainability as an opportunity for
innovation, competitive advantage, differentiation and
growth.
Leading CEOs are already uncovering strategies for
sustainability that allow them to deliver both value creation
for their companies and impact on global challenges.
Among sustainability leaders, we can see the beginnings of a
collaborative, systems approach to sustainability, focused on
the impact business can make: collaborating within and across
industries and sectors, and working closely with stakeholders
to develop the beginnings of transformational change that
can unlock the full potential of business in contributing to
global priorities.

Returns on Capital
• Reducing operating costs through improved
natural-resource management (such as
energy use and waste).
• Systematically managing their value chains.
• Improving employee retention or motivation
through sustainability activities
• or by raising prices or achieving higher
market share with new or existing sustainable
products.
Risk Management
Better management of risks that arise from
sustainability issues begins with detecting
key risks of operational disruptions from
climate change, resource scarcity, or
community issues (such as boycotts or
delays in getting permits for
manufacturing).
Growth
• Regularly revisit their business portfolios
to determine the potential impact of
trends (such as existing or potential
climate change regulations) that could
lead to new growth opportunities.
• Screen rigorously for unmet needs
created by sustainability trends in line
with their strategies and identify
potential customer segments.

• “That is your brand, and you have to protect that brand.”
• “Nobody that has a brand, does not want that brand to be associated with the problem. We all want to look like we

• “A lot of people think that turning green is costly; it is not the case.”

• “In order to attract them we realize that the younger they are they want to align their values with the values of that

• “So how do you attract? We found that we have people with a PhD working for us, for a carpet co. because there is an

• “In our industry, in Georgia, USA, the turnover of employee is 22, 23%; at interface it is 5%.
• “Giving them meaning in what they do is the most important thing that you could ever give an employee. I want
people to believe that we are making a difference, I want them to get up in the morning and try to make a difference,
and I want them to believe that we are successful at this. So we show everything to them, there is no secrets.”

Our Vision
To be the first company that, by its deeds, shows the entire industrial world what sustainability is in all its dimensions:
People, process, product, place and profits — by 2020 — and in doing so we will become restorative through the power of
influence.
Our Sustainability Journey – Mission Zero
Our journey started in 1994 with one person, our Founder and Chairman Ray Anderson. Ray challenged our then 21 year -
old company to adopt a bold vision, one that required new thinking and a new model for business. We didn’t have a map,
but Ray’s vision was a compass for our journey. As we progressed on our journey, a passion for sustainability took hold
with our people and our company was transformed. We invite you to join us on this journey. Read on as we share our
compass and our map.

Launched in November 2010, the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan sets out to decouple our growth from our
environmental impact while increasing our positive social impact. It is our blueprint for sustainable business.(...) Our Plan
is distinctive because it spans our entire portfolio of brands, all countries in which we sell our products and it applies
across the whole value chain – from the sourcing of raw materials to our factories and the way consumers use our

Afinal, O Que São Empresas Sustentáveis?
“High Sustainability” firms1
• Pay attention to externalities and this is manifested
in their relationships with stakeholders such as
employees, customers, and NGOs representing civil
society, as part of their strategy and business
model.
• Embrace a culture of sustainability where
environmental and social performances, in addition
to financial performance, are important.
• Adopt a coherent set of corporate policies related
to the environment, employees, community,
products, and customers.
• Embed policies in the corporate culture with
substantive changes in business processes.
• Institute a reinforcing loop between the underlying
organizational norms and values, and formal
corporate policies, as well as operating procedures
and performance and management systems, all
geared towards a culture of sustainability.
Firms of Endearment – FOE2
• A company that endears itself to stakeholders by
bringing the interests of all stakeholders groups
into strategic alignment.
• No stakeholder group benefits at the expense of
any other stakeholder group, and each prospers as
the others do.
• FOE connect with their stakeholders at a deeply
emotional level. They strive for share of heart.
• Share a distinctive set of core values, policies, and
operating attributes.

Organizations Voluntarily Adopting Environmental and Social Policies
are Characterized By…1
25
Governance Structure
• Distinct governance mechanisms which directly involve the
board in sustainability issues and link executive compensation
to sustainability objectives that takes into account the
environmental and social performance of the company, in
addition to financial performance.
• Significantly more likely to form a separate board committee
for sustainability.
Time Horizon
• Long-term approach towards maximizing inter-temporal
profits
• A longer-term time horizon in their external communications
with sell-side and buy-side analysts which are matched by a
larger proportion of long-term oriented investors.
Stakeholder Engagement
• Much higher level of and deeper stakeholder engagement,
coupled with mechanisms for making it as effective as
possible, e.g. an active and formal stakeholder management
process, including reporting.
Measurement and Disclosure
• Greater attention to nonfinancial measures regarding to key
stakeholders such employees; a greater emphasis on external
environmental and social standards for selecting, monitoring
and measuring the performance of their suppliers; and
• A higher level of transparency in their disclosure of
nonfinancial information and metrics by using auditing
procedures.

– eu/eles -> nós todos
– aqui/agora -> lá/amanhã
• At each stage of history, energy/communications revolutions have expanded the domain of the
central nervous system, bringing more and more of the “other” into the realm of the familiar.1

Circular Economy’s new business models
Extending our empathy to the whole biosphere
... Como Já Amplamente Reconhecido
28
• Behind the Circular Economy's new business model there is a need for a system level change in thinking.
Ellen Mac Arthur, Ellen MacArthur Foundation
• First problem, mindsets; second hurdle, maybe some policies and third hurdle and in that order, maybe
technologies. That means that we are blocking ourselves most of the times in our mindsets. For some it is totally
impossible to create a circular economy until it is done.
Feike Sijbesma, CEO and Chairman of the Managing Board, Royal DSM
To overcome these obstacles and to unlock
these opportunities, organizations need to
fundamentally change the way they think and
act.
World Economic Forum – Redesigning Business Value: A
Roadmap for Sustainable Consumption; Jan. 2010
Project MainStream’s press
conference; Davos 2014
• It is time for a new social contract for global sustainability rooted in a shift of perception – from people and
nature seen as separate parts to interdependent social-ecological systems.
• Most current economic and technological solutions are ecologically illiterate and too linear and single problem-
orientated. There is a need for a change of mindset.
• Creating a good anthropocene means going beyond solutions that merely reduce negative impacts and rather
develop a mindset where we acknowledge that we are part of this planet, not conquerors of it.

- “Sustainability is Not a Way of Doing Things,
It is a Way of Thinking”1
• To change what you are doing without changing the way you think, and you are going to hit the wall
very fast and nobody will really believe that you are in it for the right reason.
• Thinking differently, that’s how we’ve saved USD 605 Mio from 1995 to 2012.
• The way we think has everything to do with what we believe. And what we believe dictates how we
behave. And I am inviting you to challenge yourself what you believe to be true in business: does that
contribute to the well being of individuals? if it is not… then you have to question this.
• A lot of people think that turning green is costly; it is not the case. When you start thinking differently,
there is a whole world in front of you, you find solutions.
• It is not about the cost of doing it, it is about the cost of not doing it. If you were to analyze what’s the
cost of not doing it, you would realize that it is far greater than the cost of doing it.
• Backcasting. What would you like to become and when? And the next question will be, don’t talk to us
about what you have done, talk to us about what is left to be done. Who could answer the question
what is left to be done? Only the person that has a plan to what he wants to become.
• The essence of fundamental change is to stop focusing on the parts and start focusing on the whole.
• Change the word, change the mindset, change the world.
• Seeing people differently. When we meet people that are not anything like us, ask yourself what’s in
them that's in me.
• Biomimicry. We eliminated all the cost of not wanted inventories just because the biologist told us that
we were crazy not to. And we never though of it that way at all.

Seven Principles for Building Resilience in Social-Ecological Systems1
Resilience: the capacity of a system to deal with change and continue to develop.
34
• Systems with many different components (e.g species, actors or sources of knowledge) are generally more resilient than
systems with few components. Redundancy provides ‘insurance’ within a system by allowing some components to
compensate for the loss or failure of others. Redundancy is even more valuable if the components providing the
redundancy also react differently to change and disturbance (response diversity).
1. Maintain Diversity and
Redundancy
2. Manage Connectivity
• Connectivity can both enhance and reduce the resilience of social-ecological systems and the ecosystem services they
produce. Well-connected systems can overcome and recover from disturbances more quickly, but overly connected
systems may lead to the rapid spread of disturbances across the entire system so that all components of the system are
impacted.
3. Manage Slow Variables and
Feedbacks
• In a rapidly changing world, managing slow variables and feedbacks is often crucial to keep social-ecological systems
“configured” and functioning in ways that produce essential ecosystem services. If these systems shift into a different
configuration or regime, it can be extremely difficult to reverse.
4. Foster Complex Adaptative
Systems Thinking
• Although Complex Adaptative System thinking does not directly enhance the resilience of a system, acknowledging that
social-ecological systems are based on a complex and unpredictable web of connections and interdependencies is the first
step towards management actions that can foster resilience.
5. Encourage Learning
• Learning and experimentation through adaptive and collaborative management is an important mechanism for building
resilience in social-ecological systems. It ensures that different types and sources of knowledge are valued and considered
when developing solutions, and leads to greater willingness to experiment and take risks.
6. Broaden Participation
• Broad and well-functioning participation can build trust, create a shared understanding and uncover perspectives that may
not be acquired through more traditional scientific processes.
7. Promote Polycentric
Governance Systems
• Collaboration across institutions and scales improves connectivity and learning across scales and cultures. Well-connected
governance structures can swiftly deal with change and disturbance because they are addressed by the right people at the
right time.

A Complexidade é Considerada como o Maior Desafio das Lideranças
Atual e Futura, Requerendo Novas Competências1 ...
The environment has changed—it is more
complex, volatile, and unpredictable.
Researchers have identified several criteria
that make complex environments especially
difficult to manage.
• Contain a large number of interacting elements.
• Information in the system is highly ambiguous,
incomplete, or indecipherable. Interactions
among system elements are nonlinear and
tightly coupled such that small changes can
produce disproportionately large effects.
• Solutions emerge from the dynamics within the
system and cannot be imposed from outside
with predictable results.
• Hindsight does not lead to foresight since the
elements and conditions of the system can be in
continual flux.
Reflecting the changes in the environment,
the skills needed for leadership have also
changed—more complex and adaptive
thinking abilities are needed.
• Adaptability
• Self-awareness
• Boundary spanning
• Collaboration
• Network thinking
• Creativity
• Ability to think strategically and manage
change effectively
• Systems thinkers who are comfortable
with ambiguity

O corte precariza, a eficiência melhora.”

“The True Essence of Interface is in Our Collective
Purpose” 1
• Collective Purpose – the true essence of interface is in our collective purpose. 4.000 people that have
a purpose. And it is in our way and our determination to be part of the solution. And our emotional
engagement, not just engagement, it is to work to make a difference. And it is in the way we feel and
it’s in the way we act. Giving them meaning in what they do is the most important thing that you could
ever give an employee.
• Plan to what to become and when (Backcasting TNS) - Who could answer the question what is left to
be done? Only the person that has a plan to what he wants to become and when.
• People are the makeup of our success
– The talent, the knowledge that they have, the emotion that they bring, the creativity that they bring, because
they are who they are, so unique, so significant, we don’t want to lose that. And the experience that they have
– It’s this, it is the people, it is not their engineering, mechanical process, it is the people, it is the engineers that
are thinking about what we are trying to accomplish and changing the way that the equipment is working by
using less energy, by using… everything different.
• The relationship that we have with people. For a long time it is was a pyramid. That was a belief that
that was the way to go. Now we know that the human spirit around the world is changing this, because
behind sustainability there is not one man saying “follow me”, it is organically growing in every part of
the world.
• To think differently - And it’s in our way of thinking. We think differently than our competitors and we
act differently because of it.
– Sustainability is not a way of doing things, it is a way of thinking.

Defining the Organization in Terms of Relationships Leads to the
Question of How to Strengthen and Develop Them
Simplified Organization (Network) • Applying the 7 Levels of Consciousness Model1
to all the relationships inside the network, the
strength of any relationship will depend on two
dimensions
– Vertical: the levels of consciousness involved; and
– Qualitative: the quality of the bonds at each level.
• To build a strong and sustainable network, it is
necessary to know how much each relationship
contributes to the needs of the persons involved
• For example, in a commercial relationship, the
product may satisfy simultaneously different
levels of need, such as
– Basic needs: e.g. nutrition properties – rice and
beans
– Self-esteem needs: e.g. sense of social recognition
related to the brand - Mini
– Alignment of values: e.g. contribution to a better
world – Patagonia
• This is true for any kind of relationship within
the organizational network. For all stakeholders.
• Any significant change in values should imply in
a corresponding update in terms of relationships
with all stakeholders. E.g. Generation X

Exemplo1
What does managing climate risk mean for the private sector? In
the short term, it includes a significant amount of adaptation.
Businesses need to take steps to shore up their supply chains and
physical infrastructure to guard against disruption from the
extreme heat and weather events that are the hallmark of a
changing climate. We’re already seeing these adaptive efforts from
companies such as Colgate-Palmolive, which reduced its exposure
to climate risk by closing, relocating, or strengthening sites that
were increasingly exposed to severe weather conditions as part of
a larger restructuring program.
Companies are also beginning to make future infrastructure-
investment and siting decisions based on the latest climate
science. Shell, for instance, employs advisers to conduct
assessments of future climate-change conditions for large new
projects in regions such as the Arctic (projecting sea-ice conditions
for 2030 to 2050), the North Sea (wave conditions for 2010 to
2020), and tropical areas (cyclone severity for 2010 to 2030).
While these businesses may be doing better than many
governments in dealing with crisis, there is still much that needs to
be done. The business community can’t stop at adaptation. We
need to reduce the risk of future climate events.
Individual companies can do some of this. For example, utilities
can build renewable-energy facilities to meet the power demands
that will come with increasing temperatures rather than defaulting
to carbon-based energy sources.

“Governance First”1
“From my standpoint, corporate sustainability simply means corporate excellence, it means this
relentless pursue of material progress towards a more regenerative and inclusive economy, globally.
And from the standpoint of the board, the executive team, environmental, social and governance
factors ultimately are what determine economic and profit outcomes, and really I would argue that it
is governance first in particular, first among equals, but if you are doing the governance part right
then you must get the environmental and social imperatives that come with creating a long term
profitable business model. So, they are inextricably linked in terms of ESG behaviors and
performances and profit outcomes.”

and former Head of Global Sector Research UBS

• Principais condições de contorno:
horizonte do ciclo de planejamento
estratégico, natureza e alcance das
metas, nível de consciência atual e
Visão de Mundo da Alta Administração;
• Nível de incorporação da
sustentabilidade à estratégia atual do
negócio: quais temas e sua
materialidade;
• Nível de incorporação da
sustentabilidade à gestão do negócio (o
quanto essa estratégia já esta
acontecendo na prática).
• Compreensão das principais
tendências do ambiente de negócio
(global, regional e local) e das
principais externalidades do negócio e
suas tendências, e de como elas
podem afetar sua competitividade
(riscos e oportunidades);
• Esboço dos contornos do que seria o
modelo de negócio otimizado como
dos elementos para um novo modelo
de negócio, eliminando externalidades
e mitigando riscos.
Dependendo do ponto de partida
encontrado, iniciar o processo de
transformação, com o mix adequado
entre mudança cultural, atualização
estratégica e execução, levando para toda
a organização.
