A broad, inclusive definition that stresses honesty and responsibility to you, your peers, and your instructors. Not framed in terms of cheating and punishment for cheating. Respect for yourself and others, contributing to an environment/community 01/28/13 College of IST IST 110S: Academic Integrity
Brief discussion of Indiana University Quiz results. Which questions were difficult? Why? Contradictions- develop based on something already written but be new/original, look to experts but contradict/further their arguments, give credit but do your own work 01/28/13 College of IST IST 110S: Academic Integrity
Academic integrity can be compromised by any number of actions. Calvin’s made up fact-fabrication of info These are a few behaviors, some of which may not be as obvious as others. Many instructors have a zero tolerance policy. If reported by an instructor, instances of academic dishonesty can remain on a student’s transcript forever. 01/28/13 College of IST IST 110S: Academic Integrity

Cheating is often a clear cut action, for example... 01/28/13 College of IST IST 110S: Academic Integrity
[Explain the percents.] These behaviors are widely acknowledged as cheating. 01/28/13 College of IST IST 110S: Academic Integrity
Some are less obvious. Q: Why is “Submitting the same paper for more than one class without permission” cheating? A: It boils down to what the credits your earning are worth. Earning credits assumes that you have put a certain level of intellectual effort into assignments. Shirking the requirements by reusing work is a violation of personal integrity and respect other students. 01/28/13 College of IST IST 110S: Academic Integrity
Look how low the percents are. If you find yourself tackling any of these problems it’s important to talk to your instructor or others within he College to resolve the issue. Cheating will only exacerbate the problems. 01/28/13 College of IST IST 110S: Academic Integrity

Plagiarism has dire consequences, including flunking the paper in question, flunking the course, and university disciplinary action, depending on the circumstances of the office. The simplest way to avoid plagiarism is to document the sources of your information carefully. 01/28/13 College of IST IST 110S: Academic Integrity
Turnitin helps deter plagiarism before it occurs. Any instructor, including TAs, can run student work through Turnitin. Increased from 592 in Fall 2011 to 687 in Fall 2012 (stats from Penn State TLT Teaching and Learning with Technology) 01/28/13 College of IST IST 110S: Academic Integrity

Report: What your instructor sees when they run a paper through turn it in. The software directly compares material in your paper to possible sources. Properly citing information is key. 01/28/13 College of IST IST 110S: Academic Integrity
Supply the terms: Academic dishonesty, cheating, plagiarism, copyright infringement, etc. Break the students into groups of two. Ask students to create a visualization of what academic dishonesty is. (Venn diagram, hierarchy, etc.) How the terms are interrelated. Have students e-mail their finished work to speaker (or instructor). If there is time ask for volunteers to explain why they organized theirs in a certain way / why they chose that style of diagram. 01/28/13 College of IST IST 110S: Academic Integrity
A hierarchy I created. It’s not necessarily inclusive. An overture toward understanding the terms / behaviors. 01/28/13 College of IST IST 110S: Academic Integrity
It’s important that you define academic integrity not as what you shouldn’t do, but as what you should. You should cite resources properly, you should hold yourself to a high standard, etc. As we saw with the U of Indiana quiz, sometimes it’s hard to articulate why an action is wrong. It’s important to communicate with your instructor FIRST when you have questions related to academic integrity. 01/28/13 College of IST IST 110S: Academic Integrity
