Nixon-Peabody
Nixon Peabody - Peter Allen Director of IT Operations, Nixon Peabody “ Do I think we buy less storage on a year‑to‑year basis because of how we use NetApp thin provisioning? I certainly do. We probably buy 20% to 25% less storage per year. That saves us between $75,000 and $100,000 annually. It allows us to give an application the illusion of having more space than it does, while properly allocating the storage for it behind the scenes.” For full story: http://media.netapp.com/documents/nixon-peabody.pdf

Activision Activision deployed a NetApp® FAS storage system and applications for backup and recovery at its corporate office in Santa Monica and at its DR site in Burbank. The IT team creates a SnapMirror® production image, and FlexClone® runs a script that builds the Oracle® volumes in minutes, and then proceeds to clone the database. NetApp SnapMirror replicates all Oracle Databases, Exchange mailboxes, and other media-based applications at least once a day to the DR site in Burbank using Symantec® NetBackup†.
Activision - Niel Armstrong, Vice President, Information Technology, Activision “ With FlexClone® reducing the time and cost of creating clones to a few hours, we’ve enthusiastically adopted a parallel development and implementation approach, with multiple types of activities all taking place at the same time. Our project schedules are aggressive: FlexClone greatly helps us keep to them.”
Activision Why NetApp? - Niel Armstrong, Vice President, Information Technology, Activision “ With NetApp® disaster recovery capabilities, Activision can now mirror all of its data and protect its intellectual property in all of its development studios. This is a significant addition to Activision’s overall infrastructure and has allowed us to fully comply with Sarbanes-Oxley requirements.” For full story: http://media.netapp.com/documents/activision.pdf

  • 2.
  • 4.
  • 6. Anadarko - Rick Stuart, Manager, UNIX and storage systems “ We can schedule a DR test without interrupting production—or IT administrators’ regular activities. This capability gives us added security and confidence knowing we can recover because we perform the tests more frequently,” Stuart says..” For full story: http://media.netapp.com/documents/anadarko.pdf
  • 8.
  • 9. Centaline Property “ With the NetApp storage technology and a VMware solution, we have achieved unified data storage, safe and effective management, constant costs, and reduction of the degree of maintenance difficulty. This material is currently still being stored in a traditional archive. We are one of the last hospitals to transfer to PACS. It will be a huge task that will also radically affect the way the various departments operate. We have already laid the foundation for a successful implementation with the NetApp MetroCluster.” For full story: http://media.netapp.com/documents/ijessland-hospital.pdf
  • 27.
  • 28. MercadoLibre - Rodrigo Benzaquen Director of Infrastructure and Operations “ They [developers] no longer have to wait for database copies or request copies from IT operations staff—they now get daily clones of the current production database as standard procedure. FlexClone is accelerating our development efforts and helping us bring new features to market faster.” For full story: http://media.netapp.com/documents/mercado-libre.pdf
  • 29. Nixon Peabody Customer success story
  • 30.

  • 51.

  1. Figure 1) How the City of Sioux Falls uses NetApp storage. The City of Sioux Falls supports its growing VMware environment with a NetApp FAS3050C storage system connected via iSCSI to an IBM Blade Server environment. About 30 virtual machines are supported across three ESX Server nodes, with support for applications, now virtualized, like the police department’s IVN digital video system and more traditional applications like Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL Server, and Blackberry Enterprise Server. A second NetApp FAS3020 system resides at the city’s remote DR site, with NetApp SnapMirror used to replicate data between the two storage devices. The city credits use of NetApp technologies like Snapshot, SnapMirror, and FlexVol with significant time and space savings, increases in IT efficiency, performance, and overall system reliability.
  2. Organization Overview: Founded in 1988, Concord Servicing provides technology and loan servicing solutions for dozens of clients with more than 600,000 consumer accounts, representing a portfolio in excess of $2 billion. The company specializes in servicing and collecting installment loan receivables and maintenance fees, handling everything from sending out loan payment coupon books to processing payments as they come in and reporting on loan performance and running the call centers that support borrowers, although many clients keep that role in-house, with their call center staff accessing Concord’s proprietary Web-based application to get the information they need. Challenge: For Concord’s customers, business continuity is paramount, with speed of access to data a close second. Clients around the world keep Concord’s system busy at all times, accessing an AIX Universe database to check on payment status and customer history details through the company’s Web application. Concord wanted to ensure clients a consistent response time of under 200 milliseconds, but was reluctant to invest in additional disk drives to speed throughput. Several years ago, Concord moved from DAS systems to a NetApp SAN, implementing a NetApp FAS825 storage appliance and using NetApp SnapMirror technology to copy data at regular intervals from its primary system to a FAS250 backup storage system. Concord made tapes of its data daily, and stored them off-site. In the event of a major failure, the company also wanted the ability to fail over seamlessly to a synchronous copy of our data. Solution: Originally in two locations, today, Concord offices are consolidated in one building. MetroCluster runs on one controller on a NetApp FAS3140 storage unit in the data center on the third floor, and on another controller on a FAS3140 on the ground floor. MetroCluster software constantly mirrors and synchronizes data between the two floors, so even if a controller or multiple disks go down, service continues seamlessly, often without any IT intervention. When Concord upgraded to the NetApp FAS3140 storage platform, it also installed NetApp PAM cards in the machines, adding a dedicated read cache for faster, more consistent performance. Benefits: The switch to MetroCluster has virtually eliminated the risk of data loss. Concord’s RPO was previously up to 24 hours, now the company can promise zero data loss. With the NetApp solution providing rapid access to critical financial information, Concord’s clients receive consistently fast responses to their queries. What’s even more important is what they don’t see: no impact on speed or continuity of service, even when there are disk failures or other technical problems. With NetApp products, reliability comes at the right price. Concord is able to offer its clients affordable, uninterrupted service and maintain its own profit margin. Compared to traditional host-based clustering solutions for availability, MetroCluster delivers savings of up to 50% on hardware, software licenses, and ongoing staff administration time for Concord.
  3. Organization Overview: Corelio nv is Belgium’s largest newspaper publisher, selling nearly half a million copies daily. The company produces newspapers, magazines, free sheets, and e-media and offers a broad array of printing, audiovisual, and advertising services. Challenge: The Corelio IT must maintian daily operations while expanding infrastructure functionality. Corelio divisions produce newspapers seven days a week, so continuous availability of data and application services is essential. Over the past 10 years, Corelio has quadrupled its revenue through a combination of organic growth, mergers, acquisitions, and investments, so the IT team is constantly working to integrate new businesses and facilitate new opportunities. Solution: Most recently, Corelio’s corporate IT team undertook a project to harmonize the IT infrastructures and application environments of three previously separate Corelio organizations. Goals included consolidating applications to eliminate duplication of services, centralizing data sets, establishing and implementing standards, and streamlining wherever possible to reduce IT costs. In support of the project, Corelio undertook a storage refresh with requirements to: 1) deliver continuous data availability for business-critical applications; 2) consolidate file serving across the three organizations; 3) integrate NAS and SAN solutions to maximize storage utilization, streamline provisioning, and simplify administration; 4) optimize efficiency for VMware® environments; 5) provide scalability and flexibility to support future requirements, including as-yet-undetermined applications and a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI); and 6) achieve cost efficiencies. Working with Uptime Technologies, the Corelio team deployed two NetApp V3140 open storage controllers, installing one node at Corelio’s primary data center and another at the company’s second metropolitan data center. To address availability requirements, Corelio implemented NetApp MetroCluster software, which includes synchronous mirroring with array-based clustering for continuous data availability. This gives Corelio site disaster tolerance by enabling an up-to-date, identical copy of critical data to be maintained and instantly available at the second site. In the event of a primary-site disaster event, the MetroCluster solution enables instantaneous, zero-data-loss failover to the second site. V-Series nodes front-end approximately 46TB of usable capacity on Corelio’s XP24000 disk arrays. The V-Series lets Corelio utilize NetApp data protection, deduplication, cloning, and other technologies to manage capacity on the HP arrays. Corelio manages both file and block-based services through the V-Series that provides CIFS-based service for Microsoft® Windows® 2003 file shares, NFS for UNIX® systems, and iSCSI-based access to Exchange 2007 databases. The V-Series also supports (via NFS) VMware test environments for Microsoft SQL Server® applications, domain controllers, and other Web and application servers. The V-Series currently provides storage for two test environments comprised of 40 virtual servers running on 2 ESX hosts. Benefits: In a deadline-driven business, any downtime that occurs during Corelio’s critical production windows would ultimately be visible in the newspaper. NetApp solutions deliver reliable access to Corelio user and departmental data shares as well as more than 2,200 Exchange mailboxes. Inherent reliability and robust data protection software, including NetApp Snapshot™ point-in-time copy technology, combine to give Corelio faster backup/recovery and improved information access and to have the organization receive fewer help desk calls. In the four years since the first NetApp V-Series with MetroCluster was deployed, the company has not experienced any storage-related downtime or non-recoverable data loss. The NetApp solution also enables Corelio to optimize utilization of existing resources and control the cost of growth. For example, the new NetApp solution increases storage efficiencies by letting the IT team pool storage resources and provision storage capacity only when needed. In addition, NetApp technologies such as deduplication and SnapMirror replication with built-in network compression help Corelio reduce capacity and bandwidth. Lastly, the NetApp solution provides a flexible, scalable IT infrastructure that can evolve to meet the company’s future requirements such as plans to run production VMware environments over NFS to the NetApp solution, as well as a desktop unification project.
  4. Figure 1) How Nixon Peabody uses NetApp storage. Nixon Peabody has moved nearly all of its business applications onto its VMware-fueled virtual server environment. Now totaling over 240 virtual machines and 19 ESX servers, the environment’s foundation is built on a NetApp FAS6040 storage system using the NFS protocol for fast data I/O and rapid snapshots and restores. A second NetApp FAS3040 storage system resides at the firm’s colocation facility. NetApp SnapMirror replicates data between the two sites. Nixon Peabody credits use of the NetApp systems with the ultra-rapid growth of its virtual server environment, taking special note of the efficiency savings it has since gained through use of built-in NetApp features like NetApp FlexVol, Snapshot, and SnapMirror.
  5. Organization Overview: Founded in 1946, Thunderbird School of Global Management is the first and oldest graduate management school focused exclusively on global business. Regarded as the world’s leading institution in the education of global managers, it is ranked number 1 in international business by the Financial Times , U.S. News & World Report , and The Wall Street Journal /Harris Interactive 2007 Survey of Corporate Recruiters. Headquartered near Phoenix, Arizona, Thunderbird has offices in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Challenge: With worldwide adoption of the Internet, Thunderbird moved to expand its potential pool of students by augmenting its classroom instruction with an increasing number of courses and degree programs online. This new business model required continued availability of critical systems and applications, effectively requiring IT to move from supporting the business 5 days a week to supporting it 24x7, while striving to keep operation costs down. In 2001, Thunderbird purchased two racks and two FAS940s and implemented NetApp SnapMirror® to keep them in synch. Immediately, the Thunderbird team noticed time savings in backups and restores, as well as improvements in availability of up to 99.9%. As its online business grew, IT decided it needed to move to a clustered storage model for even greater availability, choosing NetApp MetroCluster. Solution: Thunderbird uses the MetroCluster environment to support its most critical applications: My Thunderbird intranet, Student Information Systems (SIS), and file sharing for business groups. NetApp MetroCluster is run across two NetApp FAS3050 storage devices with four shelves on each side. The machines are located at opposite ends of the small campus, about 300 yards apart, and each side has a total of 84 spindles. The MetroCluster is in a fabric configuration, with four Fibre Channel switches, two on each side, connecting the FAS machines and the shelves. For the rest of the network, and the connection between the FAS3050s, Thunderbird uses iSCSI for its databases and NFS for its file shares over 10GbE. Gigabit Ethernet connects the data centers to the other campus buildings, using the CIFS protocol. VMware® virtualization for server consolidation simplifies server provisioning servers, conserves capital, and reduces energy costs. The school uses the MetroCluster deep technical integration with VMware ESXi to connect its VMware servers to MetroCluster, mapping through iSCSI and NFS. NetApp SnapDrive for Windows is used to manage storage, including MetroCluster, for error-free application storage provisioning, consistent snapshot copies, rapid application recovery, and simplified data management. Benefits: Since deploying NetApp solutions: MetroCluster supports continuous uptime for Thunderbird’s new online business model, providing zero data loss at the lowest cost. IT has reduced the amount of server and storage equipment in its data center by about 40%. Thunderbird is not paying to support and power extraneous equipment, and can avoid the cost of data center expansion for many years. Simplified storage management and continuous availability has helped Thunderbird deliver storage and other IT services rapidly. NetApp solutions have transformed Thunderbird’s ability to respond promptly—and cost-effectively—to support the changing needs of its business.
  6. Customer Profile: Leading video game maker and publisher Activision, Inc, creates interactive entertainment titles that run on console game systems, personal computers, and handheld devices. Challenges: As Activision’s infrastructure reached its capacity, the company realized that it could not cost-effectively upgrade its current solution to provide the performance and availability the company required. Activision needed a modular storage environment to unify corporate departmental access across all company tiers and it had to be easily deployed within the company’s 12 game development studios and 2 main data centers and provide a unified way of communicating among all locations. The company also needed a major refresh of its business applications because it had outgrown its original Oracle E-Business Suite. The company sought to automate and consolidate its backup processes and substantially increase its disaster recovery capability to comply with its auditing process and Sarbanes-Oxley regulations. Solution: Activision began by deploying a complete NetApp infrastructure to manage its corporate-wide data and application assets. Due to the growing size of its games, the company recently upgraded its R200 in Burbank to a FAS6030 to manage backup and recovery in its 12 Burbank studios. After moving to NetApp, Activision started work on a multi-million dollar initiative to create global regionalized implementations of the Oracle E-Business Suite 11 i across nine territories in Europe, Australia, and the U.S. NetApp SnapMirror replicates all Oracle databases, Exchange mailboxes, and other media-based applications at least once a day to the DR site in Burbank using Symantec’s NetBackup. This completely protects Activision’s intellectual property, ensuring that even if the company lost use of its systems, it wouldn’t lose more than one day’s worth of work. Activision deployed a FAS3000 series system in each of its 12 remote location and utilizes NetApp SnapMirror for disk-to-disk replication to complete its DR architecture. Benefits: NetApp’s multi-protocol support makes it easy for Activision to change protocols to optimize applications. It has also dramatically reduced the time it would have taken to develop, test, integrate, and implement its Oracle applications. Using FlexClone slashed the time required to clone the production environment from a week to less than four hours. This doesn’t just save time: Armstrong says that it has transformed the way Activision approaches the development process. FlexClone also delivered substantial storage savings, because the FlexClone process uses pointers to existing data instead of laboriously filling storage space with duplicate data. Armstrong estimates savings of at least 50% for each of the company’s 500 GB production environment, which translates to savings on power, HVAC, and rack costs of servers. Despite the major increases in storage and backup capabilities, Activision hasn’t had to increase IT operations headcount: it continues to have just two UNIX administrators managing backup and storage. Activision eliminated use of tape for its backups. It still does a traditional nightly incremental or full backup, but puts it on disk for archiving.
  7. Organization Overview: With the largest online selection of vehicles, and revenues exceeding $400 million annually, AutoTrader.com is the world’s leading online automotive marketplace, attracting about 14 million unique visitors each month. Challenge: Since its inception in 1997, AutoTrader.com has experienced massive growth in its storage requirements, from 80TB to 500TB of recognizable storage in 2008. The company could no longer manage storage growth by incrementally purchasing new servers and adding direct attached storage (DAS) for each project or application. Its storage approach was both costly and difficult to manage, with no adequate provision for failover, quality assurance, or disaster recovery. To maintain its market-leading position and continue to deliver always-on service despite 30% to 40% annual growth, AutoTrader.com needed to redesign its storage infrastructure. It also sought a cost-effective and flexible solution that would be easily accessible across the corporate network. Solution: The AutoTrader.com core Web applications now run on FAS3070 systems in a clustered NAS solution and a R200 system with 48TB of data for its disaster recovery backup system. For business continuity, it uses SnapMirror to replicate data across its network between its two sites in Atlanta and Suwanee, GA. AutoTrader.com also implemented a disk-to-disk backup solution for essential applications, featuring daily replication with SnapMirror and SnapVault. It stores more than 100TB of backup data on low-cost disk storage hardware at the Suwanee location, leveraging NetApp deduplication technology to reduce the amount of disk space it uses. For less-critical applications, the company backs up using tape. The company protects its Exchange Server implementation with SnapMirror and SnapVault technologies on a FAS3020. With Snapshot copies every 5 minutes, the management and restore features of SnapManager, and Single Mailbox Recovery for Microsoft Exchange, it now takes just 15 to 20 minutes to recover if there’s a problem with Exchange—83% faster than the company’s previous implementation, which took 2 hours. Benefits: AutoTrader.com now leverages NetApp’s software suite to rapidly roll out new capabilities that expand its offerings, bring in additional revenue, and deliver innovative services ahead of the competition. Ordinarily, for a system this size, two or three staff would be required, at an annual cost of about $150K, so the NetApp solution saves money. At the same time, the NetApp infrastructure minimizes the skill sets needed to support the environment—and delivers 100% uptime. The NetApp solution frees AutoTrader.com to use this money that it would otherwise have spent “keeping the lights on,” to improve its competitive position through innovation or acquisition. The greatest benefit for AutoTrader.com is total reliability for greater customer satisfaction, all for a low TCO.
  8. Organization Overview: Alston & Bird LLP (www.alston.com) is a major U.S. law firm with more than 800 attorneys providing a full range of services to domestic and international clients who conduct business all over the world. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, the firm has been in business since 1893 and has overlaid its broad range of legal skills and business knowledge with a commitment to innovation and technology. Challenge: In 2004, the firm launched its “Everything. Everywhere. Always.” initiative. This initiative enables people to work anywhere in the world with fast, seamless, around-the-clock access to the same resources they would have in the office. Such an ambitious information strategy requires a robust, reliable storage infrastructure. When working outside of the office, the firm’s legal professionals now can access a range of productivity applications from their laptops via Citrix MetaFrame and VPN. Alston & Bird understands that effective document management can pay off in lower costs, faster response, and better-quality work. The firm recently made the transition to the Interwoven content management system, a replacement for another vendor’s system that simply wasn’t able to support the firm’s needs. As the firm managed the transition to Interwoven, the value of NetApp solutions became apparent. Solution: At the firm’s main data center in Atlanta, more than four million legal documents are stored in a Microsoft SQL Server database on a clustered pair of NetApp FAS6030 systems. The systems also support Microsoft Exchange 2003 and the Concordance litigation system, along with providing general file shares for the central office. Alston & Bird’s five regional offices in the United States access the main data center using redundant high-speed networks, and four of the five have their own NetApp FAS270 systems to store local e-mail and files. The fifth site is able to utilize the high-speed networks and centralized data storage to save on system and support costs. While Alston & Bird was revamping its document repository, the firm also implemented a disaster recovery system. The firm called on NetApp’s consulting services for help with planning, architectural design, and implementation of the disaster recovery (DR) plan. At a colocation DR site in Dayton, Ohio, a pair of clustered NetApp FAS3050 systems holds a mirrored copy of the firm’s legal documents, e-mail, databases, and files. The main data center and the four regional offices continuously update information to a NetApp FAS3050 system at the DR site using NetApp SnapMirror software. Benefits: The infrastructure at Alston & Bird powered by NetApp solutions has resulted in significant benefits to the firm. Perhaps the greatest is an enhanced ability to take on the most challenging cases. Eliminating the tape system and the staff costs of managing and maintaining local tape backups saved Alston & Bird more than $700,000 over a five-year period. It also eliminated the need for a full-time tape backup administrator—that person has been reassigned to more strategic tasks. The company has experienced no storage-related downtime since it switched to NetApp storage more than five years ago.

  11. Organization Overview: BBM supplies Canadian broadcasters and advertising agencies with viewer and listener numbers for television and radio stations. In operation since 1944, the organization uses electronic measuring systems and diary surveys to gather data from hundreds of thousands of households and analyze it to help set advertising rates and measure viewer levels. Challenge: The biggest challenge BBM faced in meeting its mandate was protecting its nightly influx of data. Tens of thousands of in-home and wearable devices across Canada automatically call BBM’s systems nightly to deliver data about how many people were tuned in to a certain channel or radio station at a certain time. BBM captures this information, analyzes it, and by 3:00 p.m. the next day turns out reports on who tuned in to which stations when. BBM’s storage environment was inefficient. The company had servers and direct-attached storage (DAS) for each version of its applications: production, development, testing, and DR. With the company continuing to boost its survey sizes and variety of analytical offerings, the IT team knew that its infrastructure would increasingly become a liability. Solution: BBM worked with RootCellar, a NetApp reseller, to develop a strategy to address business continuity and disaster recovery by creating reciprocal data centers in Toronto, Ontario, and Richmond, BC. The company runs virtual applications under VMware using a NetApp FAS3020 for proprietary and business intelligence applications from Oracle and two NetApp FAS250s for the company’s Oracle database test/dev environments. BBM uses a proprietary application that runs a variety of analytic processes to suit the requirements of its different clients. As data is captured, BBM’s application begins checking the validity and origin of the incoming data and ensuring a representative sample. At all its sites, BBM runs this and other applications as virtual applications and stores images of its virtual machines (VMs) on storage from NetApp. It stores all applications and Oracle databases on NetApp storage and replicates them to both sites by using SnapMirror, so BBM can bring up entire VMs, with applications and data, at either location. BBM backs up its data according to the needs of the applications, using NetApp Snapshot technology to back up several times per day or after key processes complete. Benefits: Virtualization saves BBM hundreds of thousands of dollars in Oracle licenses. Because creating additional Oracle test environments costs BBM nothing but additional disk space used by the FlexClone volumes, the company can now afford to thoroughly test all of its processes and applications in an Oracle environment. With consolidated, virtualized storage, BBM makes much better use of its capacity. The company has increased utilization from about 30% to over 60%. Its consolidated, virtualized, and mirrored storage infrastructure reliably delivers near-instantaneous failover.
  12. Organization Overview: Gilead Sciences, Inc. is a $3 billion research-based biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops, and commercializes innovative medicines in areas of unmet need. With each new discovery and experimental drug candidate, Gilead Sciences seeks to improve the care of patients suffering from life-threatening diseases. The company specializes in HIV palliatives, partnering with other drug companies to create co-branded drugs that consolidate multi-drug cocktails. Challenge: In this business, time-to-market is critical—even one day makes a difference, especially when successful treatments can bring in up to a million dollars daily. As a result, Gilead needs to keep to its project timeline commitments to ensure drugs are released on schedule. It has to have ready, reliable access to all information related to drug research and development to comply with stringent FDA regulations. To support its double-digit growth and comply with industry regulations, Gilead needed to implement an efficient and manageable storage infrastructure that supported easy upgrades and data migration. The company also wanted to deploy Oracle ERP and roll out a PeopleSoft application worldwide. The goal was to have both applications supported by a comprehensive and reliable data protection solution. Solution: Gilead stores all its Oracle Databases, Siebel, PeopleSoft, and Oracle E-Business Suite applications and data on NetApp systems, leveraging NetApp capabilities for storage management, disaster recovery, and virtualization. Gilead relies on NetApp tools to simplify administration. NetApp snap technology automates replication of all business and patient data. SnapManager for Exchange with Single Mailbox Recovery simplifies management of Gilead’s 3000-user mail system and SyncMirror ensures the company’s business and mission critical application data are available and up-to-date at all times. Benefits: Gilead’s NetApp storage solution has enabled the company to meet its expanding needs for storage while improving system reliability and operating efficiency. Chris Chan, Gilead’s manager of storage operations, estimates that NetApp saves Gilead at least half a million dollars a year in system administration costs alone. Non-specialists can perform many storage-related tasks in the course of doing their jobs due to the ease of use of NetApp systems. Using NetApp storage systems, Data ONTAP, and SnapRestore, individual employees can easily recover their data from local or vaulted snapshots. With NetApp clusters delivering high availability, the storage team works Monday through Friday only. NetApp and VMware partnered in working with Gilead, and together have implemented an impressive example of virtualization.
  13. Organization Overview: Synopsys, Inc. is a world leader in delivering semiconductor design software, intellectual property (IP), design for manufacturing (DFM) solutions, and professional services that companies use to design systems-on-chips (SoCs) and electronic systems. Challenge: For Synopsys, data is not just a part of the business: It is the business. Synopsys markets electronic design automation (EDA) tools and other digital assets used to design integrated circuits and electronic systems. The source code for these software tools must be protected and continuously available, or the company’s operations and profits suffer. One of Synopsys’ biggest challenges is that it has a lot of data to back up in a short time. And it’s growing—35% a year or more. Every hardware box, every software solution—everything the company deploys in its storage infrastructure has to scale. There’s a global challenge, too, since Synopsys has 80 field offices and 6 major design centers located around the world—with more than 5,100 employees who need access to data to do their jobs. To drive down IT overhead expenses, Synopsys has to standardize on solutions that can be implemented worldwide in a consistent way. Solution: After examining the offerings from Data Domain, EMC, and Hitachi, Synopsys decided to go with NetApp NearStore technology and software to help the IT team build out an architecture that would add the ability to store multiple copies of data on secondary SATA disks. Synopsys ordered nine NearStore R200 systems for the secondary tier of storage. The deployment is underway, with NetApp providing the installation services and the Synopsys team handling configuration, testing, and production deployment. In the data centers where the new architecture is fully deployed, Synopsys keeps four copies of data on disk, created and managed using software from NetApp. On the primary storage, a local copy of the working data is kept current using Snapshot technology. SnapVault software backs Snapshot copies up to a local NearStore R200 system. Synopsys uses SnapRestore software to recover information quickly. It was important to Synopsys to centralize as much of the data backup as possible, and that’s where NetApp Open Systems SnapVault added value. Synopsys uses tape as one more level of protection, writing an archive copy of the data on the local R200 to a tape library although the long-term goal is to eliminate tape backups entirely. Benefits: A benefit of using NetApp’s multitiered storage is that Synopsys can now implement an information lifecycle management (ILM) system. By migrating data over time to less expensive storage, the company can save money without compromising data protection. Synopsys runs a tight ship financially, so the IT group had to show a rapid ROI to justify the infrastructure refresh. After less than 18 months of production operation, NetApp’s solution has more than paid for itself. It has reduced administration costs by one full-time equivalent. NetApp’s scalability has helped Synopsys handle its growth and keep running 365 days a year.
  14. The Customer: Annual global revenues exceed £400m. This company’s work can be found throughout the capital in buildings such as Lloyd's of London, Tate Modern, City Hall, Swiss Re Building (also known as The Gherkin), and Millennium Bridge. International projects include the Sydney Opera House, Australia; HSBC HQ, Hong Kong; and the Phoenix Library, USA. Story focuses on the Building Engineering division in London, which is split into eight separate groups housed in three offices more than a mile apart. Each of the eight groups had dedicated e-mail and data servers, so a total of 16 servers were being individually managed by the IT team. (total of 100 servers in London across multiple divisions and 2,000 employees) The Challenge: Existing systems required 16 separate backups and demanded a high level of support Staff needed storage for a range of data including office automation documents, CAD/CAM engineering files, and large spreadsheets Microsoft® Exchange failures were occurring every six to nine months, with recovery times in excess of 24 hours; this put intense pressure on network support resources while causing major disruptions to business and staff. The Solution: Storage consolidation across the eight groups using NetApp storage systems, SnapRestore, SnapManager for Exchange, SnapMirror Central NetApp storage system supplemented by a remote NetApp system that provides a mirror of the Exchange site Business Benefits: Project done on time, 15% under budget Reduction of eight mail domains into one has delivered cost savings in areas such as licensing, maintenance charges, and tape media while reducing backups 90% cuts admin costs Exchange recovery time cut from 24 hours to 25 minutes Centralized solution enables their staff to work flexibly across divisions while Self-restore from Snapshot copies improves productivity They now plan to transfer all of its London offices to NetApp storage within the next two years.
  15. Organization Overview: This is a professional services firm providing engineering, design, planning, project management, and consulting services. Headquartered in London, with 85 offices in Europe, Australia, Asia, and the U.S., the firm has revenues exceeding US$950 million and more than 9,000 employees worldwide. Challenge: They have project experience behind some of the most innovative engineering and design projects in the world such as the Sydney Opera House, Channel Tunnel Rail Link in the U.K., London Heathrow Terminal 5, and the Seattle Central Library. Like any large company, this company depends on both structured database and unstructured office files to run its business. Company financials run on Oracle E-business Suite and JD Edwards software. Microsoft Exchange e-mail files, CAD/CAM drawings and office automation documents are also stored on the company’s network. Meanwhile, tracking time and materials is handled by a specialized package called Progression by RedSky. With so much mission-critical data at stake, management focused on its disaster recovery ability following a growth spurt and series of mergers in the 2002/2003 timeframe. The company was outsourcing its DR operation to a firm with its own data center. They retained backup tapes and in the event of a disaster, the vendor would attempt to restore theirdata within 24 hours using a mix of Windows and UNIX hardware and software. Because they used a wide range of applications, software versions, and operating systems, if felt at risk depending on the vendor’s equipment and skills. The head of IT – project delivery, and his staff spearheaded a project to streamline their server estate and to implement an in-house disaster recovery system. Key to success was a solution that would leverage its existing IT skills with minimal retraining, offer rock solid performance and reliability, and be more cost-effective than the prior solution. Solution: The company selected a DR solution based on NetApp hardware and software, including two NetApp FAS3050 storage systems, one for its London data center and another for its data recovery facility approximately 100 miles away. Primary data protection is achieved by replicating data between these two facilities using NetApp SnapMirror software; local file protection and file restores is achieved by using NetApp’s SnapManager software, including SnapManager for SQL Server and SnapManager for Microsoft Exchange. Additional data redundancy is made possible by replicating data with the international offices in Australia, Europe, and the U.S. Benefits: Perhaps the best indicator in the companies DR success is that it’s had no major network outages as a result of a problem with its NetApp storage servers. The time required to recover mission-critical applications and databases has been slashed by 99%, from 24 hours with the old outsourced solution to less than 15 minutes today. Restoring local files that have been accidentally erased, once a six hour process, now takes 10 minutes or less. Savings from data center consolidation and DR combined are US$3.6 million in hardware, software, and support costs over three years. And, they have been able to leverage its existing IT/IP skills without adding any new staff, and to increase shared access to information by replicating data to corporate offices worldwide.
  16. Organization Overview: UZ Leuven is one of the top medical healthcare providers in Europe, with 5 locations and more than 2000 beds. Situation : LZ Leuven was using Eudora for e-mail and Microsoft Outlook for calendar functions. Database corruption was a frequent occurrence. Restoring the database took hours, lowering productivity. Fifteen percent of all help desk complaints were related to e-mail. With a projected volume of more than 100,000 e-mail messages a day and double the number of users, UZ Leuven had a concern about the long-term viability of its messaging infrastructure. Solution: The hospital upgraded to Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and deployed Symantec Enterprise Vault. The primary Exchange database is stored on a NetApp FAS3050 system connected to the Exchange server over IP-SAN (iSCSI). E-mail archives—currently 1.5 terabytes—are stored on a NetApp NearStore® R200. Enterprise Vault automatically archives e-mail messages over 30 days old, moving them off the FAS3050 and onto the R200. The Single-Instance Storage feature of Enterprise Vault ensures that only one copy of each attachment is archived, no matter how many e-mail messages link to that document. Archiving is virtually transparent to the users. Results: Restoring a mailbox takes just two hours. The average number of help desk calls per user has fallen dramatically: By avoiding hiring1.5 more full-time equivalents (FTEs), LZ Leuven saves 122,000 USD (90,000 EUR) yearly. Now e-mail complaints account for just 5% of help desk calls, one-third of the previous volume. After moving to the Exchange-Enterprise Vault-NetApp solution, annual downtime dropped to just 5 minutes, for better than 99.999% availability. The financial benefit avoiding lost productivity is estimated to be 391,000 USD (287,000 EUR). The hospital will realize full payback on its investment in the new e-mail infrastructure in 41 months.
