The First Time the San Francisco 49ers Won the Super Bowl
1. The First Time the San Francisco
49ers Won the Super Bowl
By Dr. Michael Ricupito
2. Introduction
At the beginning of 1981, the San Francisco
49ers had never won a Super Bowl. That
year, Bill Walsh was coach, and he replaced
many of the members of the 49ers secondary
team with untested players and rookies. Among
these players was the now well-respected free
safety, strong safety, and cornerback Ronnie Lott.
Additionally, Walsh added veterans Jack
“Hacksaw” Renyolds and Fred Dean to the team.
3. About 49ers 1st SuperBowl Win
Before reaching the Super Bowl, the 49ers
needed to beat the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC
Championship Game. After turning the ball over
six times, the 49ers were trailing by six, but Joe
Montana led an 80-plus-yard drive that resulted in
a touchdown. The 49ers won the game 28-27.
Playing in Super Bowl XVI, the 49ers took the
lead early, and, at half time, the score was 20-0.
The Cincinnati Bengals played their hardest, but
there was no way to defeat the Montana-led
„Niners, and the team won its first Super Bowl.
