2. ROUND
• Round characters are well developed. They
have depth. We want to KNOW about them
and find them interesting or intriguing. They
are complex and we want to get into their
head.
• Think ROUND like a basketball – you can get
inside it and look around.
3. FLAT
• These characters are not well developed. They
are not complex. We do not think about them
or “get into them”. Often these are support
characters.
• Think FLAT like concrete. You cannot get inside
of them and look around. (metaphorically)
4. CHARACTERS
Are either ROUND or FLAT but not both!
Think about it…..either we get into them and
they are complex, or we don’t and they are not.
No grey areas here.
ROUND or FLAT
5. DYNAMIC
• Dynamic characters undergo a fundamental
change due to events in the story.
• Things happen to change them inside as a
person.
• Think Dynamic people have a lot of variety
going on in their lives! They
change up and adapt.
6. STATIC
• Static characters stay the same inside or the
same type of character no matter what
happens.
• Think STATIC electricity. It just sits there. Just
like these characters.
7. CHARACTERS
are either static or dynamic but not both.
• Again, think about it—they either change
inside and their beliefs or they stay the same.
