5. One of them, the disciple whom
Jesus loved, was reclining next to
him[Jesus]. Simon Peter therefore
motioned to him to ask who it was
of whom He spoke. Then, leaning
back on Jesus’ breast, he said to
Him, “Lord, who is it?”
John 13:23
7. Truth
John was passionate about Truth
His Gospel & Epistles
Epistles
1 John = very cut & dry (for God or against Him)
2 John = calls for total separation from falseness
3 John 4 = “I have no greater joy than to hear that
my children walk in the truth”
8. Careless reader will by dismayed
He is underscoring that believer’s lives should
be dominated by righteousness, not sin
9. Our Best Often Becomes Our Worst
Human depravity turns our gifts into a curse
Zeal for Truth can become Judgementalism,
harshness, and a lack of compassion
Hard work and ambition can become sinful Pride
Confidence can become sinful focus on self,
making us smug and careless
11. Mark 9
38 "Teacher," said John, "we saw a man
driving out demons in your name and we
told him to stop, because he was not one
of us." 39"Do not stop him," Jesus said. "No
one who does a miracle in my name can in
the next moment say anything bad about me,
40 for whoever is not against us is for us. 41I
tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a
cup of water in my name because you belong
to Christ will certainly not lose his reward.
12. Luke 9
51As the time approached for him to be
taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out
for Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers
on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village
to get things ready for him; 53 but the
people there did not welcome him, because
he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the
disciples James and John saw this, they
asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire
down from heaven to destroy them?" 55 But
Jesus turned and rebuked them, 56 and
they went to another village.

14. “Beneath all my seemingly strong self-
confidence there remained the question:
“if all those who shower me with so much
attention could see me and know me in
my innermost self, would they still love
me?” That was an agonizing
question.” (pg 29) Henri Nouwen
16. You were his enemies, separated
from him by your evil thoughts and
action, yet now he has brought you
back as his friend. He has done this
through his death on the cross in his
own human body.
17. As a result, he has brought you into
the very presence of God, and you
are holy and blameless as you stand
before him without a single fault.
Colossians 1:21
