Creating engaging content is a huge challenge for marketers. By focusing your podcast on a niche you can narrow your audience to those most interested in what you have to say. Opening Act covers how startups and solopreneurs can use WordPress for content marketing and growth hacking to build their audience and grow their business. My audience is "DIY" entrepreneurs in the early stages of their project.
Producing and publishing a podcast gives you instant authority and credibility in your niche. If you provide quality, valuable information in an entertaining way your audience will grow. People will recognize you as a “premium” expert and come to you for advice.
The human voice makes a stronger connection. When people listen to you speak a level of trust is established. People read blogs in their own voice, but listening to you speak they hear yours. It's a conversation. Bring your personality into your platform.
Interview people you look up to and admire. Having a mentor as a guest is a way to continually learn new things. Promote your friends and peers and they will help build your audience by mentioning you when you mention them.
Convert listeners into paying customers. Provide premium or paiod additional content. Ask for donations, "Patrons" on sites like Patreon.com. When you have built an audience you can seek out Sponsors which is the most common way to monetize a podcast.
Podcasts never went away. There is a resurgance in podcasts, but they’ve always been an effective form of content. The popularity of podcast is definitely on the rise.
Alex Blumberg producer of This American Life, and co-founder Matt Lieber raised $1.5M for their podcast network. Startup is a podcast tracking the launch of the Gimlet Media Podcast network.
Higher end mics from $100 to $400 (and higher!)
Stop "explosives" sounds.
Use a shockmount to prevent vibrations from being picked up by the mic. My next equipment upgrade will be a swing arm mic stand and shockmount.
Can do it free with built-in mic or cheap headset microphone, but sound quality may suffer.
Audacity is a free open source audio recording and editing software for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux. For example, I use a de-esser to reduce prominence of “sibilant” consonants. Pop filter alone may not be enough to get clear audio.
Free, with premium add-ons.
$49.99 Month as part of Creative Cloud
A lot of interview or “panel” podcasts use Google Hangouts. Create an unlisted 'Hangout on Air' and invite your guest into that Hangout. Video file is downloadable from YouTube. Edit video or extract audio and publish.
Try to get on New & Noteworthy (Must be less than two months old)
Cheap, Scalable, Fast
Podcast hosting network starts at $5/month. Good statistics.
These are just the basics, but if you don’t have a background in audio you may want to hire someone to do post-production work on your podcast. Rates vary, but it can be a good investment in the quality of your show.
Don't just have iTunes, but you may want to in the beginning to get into new & noteworthy. Add to Sticther, SoundCloud, plain RSS Link. Make sure you validate that enclosures are included correctly and your show data is correctly confiugured.
Audio is not indexed. Hire someone to create a transcription for even better results. Like post-production rates vary, but this won’t be a big investment.
Depending on the style of your podcast a barking dog might be part of the charm!
