19. History & Heritage of RAK Archaeological excavations reveal that an advanced civilisation involved in trade existed in this region since 5,000 BC. The famous Arab navigator Ahmed IbnMajid was born around AD 1432-1437 in RAK (Julphar). For many years, Ras Al Khaimah was famous for its pearl divers and renowned as an important port of trade with links to Asia. In 1972, Ras Al Khaimah joined the union of the United Arab Emirates.
