Linked Data has become a broadly adopted approach for information management and data management not only by government organisations but also more and more by various industries. Enterprise linked data tackles several challenges like the improvement of information retrieval tools or the integration of distributed data silos. Enterprises understand better and better why their information management should not be limited by organisational boundaries but should rather consider to integrate and link information from different spheres like the public internet, government organisations, professional information providers, customers and even suppliers. On the other hand, enterprise IT architects still tend to pull down the shutters wherever possible. The continuation of the success of the Semantic Web doesn't seem to be limited by technical barriers anymore but rather by people's mindsets of intranets being strictly cut off from other information sources. In this talk I will throw new light on the reasons why metadata is key for professional information management, and why W3C's semantic web standards are so important to reduce costs of data management through economies of scale. I will discuss from a multi-stakeholder perspective several use cases for the industrialization of semantic technologies and linked data.

In this paper, we propose a domain ontology construction tool with OWL. The advantage of our tool is focusing the quality refinement phase of ontology construction. Through interactive support for refining the initial ontology, OWL-Lite level ontology, which consists of taxonomic relationships (defined as classes) and non-taxonomic relationships (defined as properties), is constructed effectively. The tool also provides semi-automatic generation of the initial ontology using domain specific documents and general ontologies.

Nowadays, Data Science is buzzing all over the place. But what is a, so-called, Data Scientist? Some will argue that a Data Scientist is a person able to report and present insights in a data set. Others will say that a Data Scientist can handle a high throughput of values and expose them in services. Yet another definition includes the capacity to create meaningful visualizations on the data. However, we enter an age where velocity is a key. Not only the velocity of your data is high, but the time to market is shortened. Hence, the time separating the moment you receive a set of data and the time you’ll be able to deliver added value is crucial. In this talk, we’ll review the legacy Data Science methodologies, what it meant in terms of delivered work and results. Afterwards, we’ll slightly move towards different concepts, techniques and tools that Data Scientists will have to learn and appropriate in order to accomplish their tasks in the age of Big Data. The dissertation is closed by exposing the Data Fellas view on a solution to the challenges, specially thanks to the Spark Notebook and the Shar3 product we develop.

This workshop aims at gathering together practioners of all levels and from a variety of research areas (agronomy, plant biology, food, life sciences etc) to compare best practices, points of views and projects about producing and consuming data in the agrifood field. As it happens in general for digital data, the current trends in this arena include integration of "traditional" semantic-based approaches (eg, ontoloies, RDF-based linked data) with lightweight schemas (eg, Bioschemas/schema.org), use of JSON-based APIs, development of data lakes and knowledge graphs based on NoSQL technologies, graph databases based on property graphs (eg, Neo4j, TinkerPop/Gremlin). Workshop participants will get an opportunity to discuss how those approaches and technologies are being used in the agrifood field, for the purpose or realising the FAIR data principles and make data sharing a powerful tool for research, industry or socio-economic investigation. In particular, we will propose an interactive session to outline the way participant-proposed datasets can be encoded through bioschemas or similar approaches.

Deep Learning for Information Retrieval: Models, Progress, & Opportunities

Multistores are data management systems that enable query processing across different database management systems (DBMSs); besides the distribution of data, complexity factors like schema heterogeneity and data replication must be resolved through integration and data fusion activities. In a recent work [2], we have proposed a multistore solution that relies on a dataspace to provide the user with an integrated view of the available data and enables the formulation and execution of GPSJ (generalized projection, selection and join) queries. In this paper, we propose a technique to optimize the execution of GPSJ queries by finding the most efficient execution plan on the multistore. In particular, we devise three different strategies to carry out joins and data fusion, and we build a cost model to enable the evaluation of different execution plans. Through the experimental evaluation, we are able to profile the suitability of each strategy to different multistore configurations, thus validating our multi-strategy approach and motivating further research on this topic.
