2. Diegetic Sound
• The sound that exists in the scene.
• E.g. Talking, noise of cars, the wind, music
from a radio etc.
• Soaps usually only use diegetic sound.
• Jaws uses diegetic sound until the shark
attacks because the music is associated with
it.
3. Non-diegetic Sound
• The sound put on a film during post-production.
• E.g. music soundtrack, sound effects like a
crescendo etc.
• In the shower scene of psycho the violins are
used when Marion gets stabbed.
4. Crescendo
• Build up of sound or music to imply something is about to
happen.
• In the Godfather they use a diegetic crescendo to build
tension and help the viewer anticipate what will happen.
Diminuendo
• Where the music or sound dies down, as if a threat has
gone away.
• In CSI ‘Strip Strangler’ they use a diminuendo before the
women gets murdered
5. Sforzando
• A short, sharp, loud noise often used to
emphasise shock or fear.
• Sforzando is used when the door slams shut in
Paranormal Activity.
