5.4. State Food Laboratories
5.4.1. There are 72 Food Laboratories under the administrative control of State/U.T Govts. and Local
Bodies.
5.4.2. Achievements during the year 1997-98 and 1998-99(Till Nov. 98)
5.4.2.(i) An amount of Rs. 0.80 Crores have been released by the Central Govt. to the States/U.Ts
during the year 1997-98 and Rs. 1.50 Crores is to be released during the year 1998-99 for purchase of
equipments for the State Food Laboratories,
5.4.2.(ii) 8 final notifications amending the PFA Rules, 1955 have been published during the year
1997-98 and 9 final notifications have been published upto Oct. 1998.
5.4.2.(iii) 12 draft notifications inviting public comments relating to amendments to the PFA Rules,
1955 have been published during 1297-98 and 3 draft notifications have been published upto Oct.
1998.
5.4.2.(iv) A number of Shadow Committee meetings were held during the year 1998-99 and views of
India formulated and despatched to Codex Seat. India sent delegation to a number of Codex meetings
viz. Fruit and Vegetables, Food Additives and Contaminants, Food Labelling Milk and Milk Products,
Cocoa Products, Chocolates, Nutrition and food for special dietary uses, Food Hygiene, General
Principles, Pesticide residues, Co-ordinating Committee for Asia, Import Export Certification Systems.
5.4.2.(v) A meeting of the Central Committee for Food Standards, a statutory Committee under the
Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954 was held on Nov. 23-24, 1998.
5.4.2.(vi) One of the recent amendments made in the PFA Rules, 1955 provides that all the food
packages shall have to indicate the period upto which the product is best for consumption. �
