Editor's Notes

  1. Land Down Under Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McsWKczU6wc Beds are Burning Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10BbpGKLXqk&feature=related
  2. Canberra is the capital of Australia. Tasmania is an island south of the mainland. The Great Barrier Reef is located off the northeastern coast. It is considered a natural wonder of the world.
  3. Sydney is the largest city in Australia, and host of the 2000 summerOlympics games. The Sydney Opera house is one of the most recognizable buildings in the world. The most famous aspect of the building is the concrete “shells” that form roofs. The opera house contains five theaters. It was completed in 1973.
  4. The bridge is the world’s 4 th largest spanning bridge. It is made from steel and officially opened in 1932. The bridge stands 452 feet high and for a fee you can climb to the top.
  5. Located off the coast of northeastern Australia, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef in the world stretching 1,600 miles. A reef is made from the skeletons of small sea animals that serve as a home to many living organisms such as sponges. These in turn attract larger animals such as fish and sharks.
  6. Some reports warn that the bleaching or dying of coral will result in the destruction of the Great Barrier Reef by the year 2050. A change in ocean temperature by as little as two percent can cause this to occur and experts predict ocean temperature in the area will increase as much as 10 degrees by the end of this century.
  7. Australia has animals found no other place in the world due to its isolated geographical location. The Cassowary is found in New Guinea and northeastern Australia. It is a solitary animal and has gained a reputation for attacking/charging humans. There are numerous cases of these attacks, but only one death—when two brothers attempted to beat the bird to death, it knocked one on the ground and hit him with his toe claw.
  8. Wombat, kangaroos, platapus and the frilled lizard.
  9. The wildfires of February 2009 in southern Australia killed over 200 people. It was the worst wildfire in Australian history. The fire was declared an arson.
  10. The outback is a vast area of plains and plateaus that is largely flat and dry, or arid. Most of Australia is classified as the outback, and is not heavily populated.
  11. Aboriginies named the rock Uluru, and English immigrants referred to it as Ayer’s Rock. It is 1,142 feet high and made of sandstone. It is one of the largest monoliths in the world. A monolith is a stand-alone rock formation. The closest city is over 200 miles away—Alice Springs. Depending on the sunlight and time of day, the rock appears to change color. The best time for viewing Uluru is at sunset, with the rock taking a reddish hue.
  12. Made of granite and is 47 feet tall. Process achieved through erosion about 60 million years ago.
  13. The aborigines are the native inhabitants of Australia. When the British arrived in Australia, the aboriginal population declined, mainly due to disease. Today, the aborigines are struggling to maintain the customs and traditions. They believe in a strong connection to the natural and spiritual world and see themselves as the protectors of the environment.
  14. Traditional artwork of the aborigines include many geometric and animal designs which are made from a series of dots.
  15. The traditional form of hunting of the aborigines was the boomerang, used to stun they prey. If they missed, the boomerang (if thrown correctly) will come back to the thrower. The traditional musical instrument was the didgeridoo, made from a hollowed-out piece of eucalyptus, caused from termites eating the middle—they do not like the taste of the hard outer layer.
  16. The Maori are the traditional inhabitants of New Zealand. Just like the Aborigines, the Maori way of life was threatened with the arrival of the British. Today, there is a strong movement to protect their language in customs. The Maori are known for their warrior history and tattoo art.
  17. Traditional Maori greeting involves touching foreheads. The customary Maori dance involves chanting and creating threatening facial expressions, which include sticking out their tongues—this was historical used for warding off potental invaders.
