WHO IS CALIBAN?
Caliban is one of the
lead antagonists in
the play, The Tempest
This play is a
romance, influenced
by a tragicomedy (A
Plot synopsis
Alonso, the king of Naples, is returning from his
daughter’s wedding in tunis. he is accompanied by
his son, Ferdinand, his brother, Sebastain, and
Antonio, the Duke of Milan. An old Milanese
courtier, Gonzalo, is also on board. The ship is
wrecked in a storm and all the passengers and
crew are thrown into the furious sea.
Prospero, the former Duke of Milan, and his fifteen
year-old daughter, Miranda, are watching the
shipwreck from an island. He tells her, for
the first time, how they came to be on the island.
Twelve years before, when he had been Duke of
Milan, his brother Antonio, had usurped him, but
with gonzalo’s help he had escaped in a small boat
with his baby daughter, Miranda, and his library of
books about magic. They had ended up on the island
and Prospero had turned the only inhabitant,
Caliban, a deformed and savage creature, into his

– The play seems to be set on a
  Caribbean on a Mediterranean island
  and was set around the year of 1609

• The tempest is a whole mash up of
  different Genres, this play is a
  “tragicomedy” mixed in with a bit of
  romance

• Man to man (Prospero & Caliban)
  when prospero banishes caliban

• Man to supernatural, with
  prospero using him magic to
  control people
Main Conflict
• Major Conflict - Man vs. Society -
  Prospero, the duke of Milan and a
  powerful magician, was banished
  from Italy and cast to sea by his
  usurping brother, Antonio, and
  Alonso, the king of Naples. As the
  play begins, Antonio and Alonso
  come under prospero’s magic power
  as they sail past his island.

• Exposition-From the real world the
  action passes into the realm of
  enchantment. in talk with Miranda,
  Prospero unfolds his past history
  and the past history of the island.
  This part of the scene has the
  effect of a classical prologue.
  Ariel and Caliban are introduced,
  and the Exposition closes with the
  entrance of Ferdinand as Ariel

• Conflict- The conflict arises when
  Prospero's magically conjured
  tempest at sea brings the ship of his
  betraying brother Antonio, the
  illegitimate Duke of Milan, to the
  shores of his Island where he and his
  daughter Miranda live in quiet exile
  after Antonio wrenched his throne
  from while he had his back turned
  studying the Classics. That is to say,
  the shipwreck brought nothing but
  trouble and the conflict is between

• Resolution- Prospero recognizes
  the marriage contract between
  Ferdinand and Miranda, and a
  Masque is "presented" to celebrate
  the betrothal. After Prospero
  utters the farewell to his actors,
  Ariel enters with news of the
  collapse of the Caliban plot,
  Prospero has now all his enemies in
  his power, and when Ariel "discases"

• Calibans relationships: Caliban is a slave to
  Prospero, after they start off in a good
  friendship but after Caliban tried to rape
  miranda in order to "people” the island
• Motives driving Caliban are that he wants to
  be treated equally and he wants to populate
  the island
How does Caliban change?;)
• Caliban changes throughout the
  play by having a decent friendship
  with prospero after he saves him
  on the island and prospero teaches
  him to speak, but later on in the
  play Caliban ruins this friendship
  and becomes prosperos slave
  because he tried raping Miranda in
  order to “people” the island
