Empowerment of women
1. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
MARCH 8TH 2011
CELEBRATING THE PAST AND PLANNING FOR FUTURE; STRONG
LEADERSHIP, STRONG WOMEN AND EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN
BY
SRI VIDYA AND VEDIC AND SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH FOUNDATION
The status of women in any civilization shows the stage of evolution
when the civilization has arrived. With regard to the status of women in
Indian society at large, no nation has held their women in higher esteem
than the Hindus. Perhaps no other literature has presented a more
admirable type of women character than sita, Maitriya, Gargi. Hindu
Mythology witnesses that the status of Hindu women during the vedic
period was honorable and respectable. Attainment of women in intellectual
field is to be inferred from the fact some of the hymens are attributed the
female rishis. They were on the same footing as men. They learnt the
Vedas, were entitled to recite the Vedas and they were teachers as well as
learners.
Many prominent women played a leading role in the freedom
movement. The important place assigned to women in India dates back to
the time of the Vedas and Smritis. During the Vedic age the position of
women in society was very high and they were regarded as equal partners
with men in all respects. In keeping with this tradition, burden of tears and
toils of the long years of struggle for India’s freedom was borne by the wives,
mothers and daughters, silently and cheerfully. The strong cultural
background of Indian society and high status of women kept them healthy
from all perspectives – social, physical and psychological.
Although we are in a traditional country where women are respected as
“ MATRISHAKTI ‘ over the years women have overcome the traditional mind
sets and have excelled in professions like teaching, medicine and pure
sciences. Women have made important contributions in all walks of life and
made inroad in new fields. Ex:- Smt. Krina Mazumdar – a Biotech
entrepreneur and CEO of Biocon India Group; Dr. Indira Hinduja who
produced first scientifically documented test tube baby; Smt. Shahanaz
Husain – the mother of herbal cosmetics in world; Smt. Madhuri Mathur – a
lady who invented SUMEET MIXER.

2. At a glance, women in general might look like very simple, docile,
unassuming and humble, but make no mistake, for behind this simple
straight face is a razor sharp brain and uncanny ability to execute, to
convert thought into action without much ado. Women contributed in all the
spheres of technical advancement of humanity. They held the same burdens
of scholarship as the men did and accomplished just as much. She is
resourceful, passionate and creative about her work as any other male
scientist.
Recently a Japanese magazine concluded that Indian Women are
number one amongst women from various countries in acquiring and
applying IT knowledge.
Women have a great part to play in the progress of our country, as
the mental and physical contact of women with life is much more lasting
and comprehensive than that of men for nothing was it said “The hand that
rocks the cradle rules the word” in the apron string women is hidden the
revolutionary energy, which can establish paradise on this earth. She is the
magnificent creation of god, a multi faceted personality with the power of
benevolence, adjustability, integrity and tolerance, She is companion of
man, gifted with equal mental faculty, a protector and provider, the
embodiment of love and affection.
In post independence women have played a significant roles as
doctors engineers, judges, pilots, scientists, diplomats, legislators and even
as prime minister. The myth that certain fields were only meant for men
has been demolished by women. They have proved to be more vibrant,
dynamic, sincere and perfect in every field. Mother Teresa, P.T. Usha,
Mrs.Subulakshmi, Kiran Bedi, Dr.Padmavathi, Smt.Medha Patkar have
become great name in different fields of their work.
Women are actually proving to be academically better and socially
more active. They are contributing extensively towards the social
transformation and building of the nation. They are less selfish and more
dedicated to duty and have much patience than men by nature. Women like
Indira Gandhi, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, Margaret Thatcher, Chandrika
Kumaratunga have left a indelible mark not only on their nations but also at
international level.
Modern women have risen far above the domestic drudgery. They are
educated and aware enough to deal with any station competently. In the
present times, they are no longer the inanimate objects. They have
struggled hard to establish the identity of their own. They possess enough
strength and self- confidence in a brave new world.

3. According to Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Rajendra Prasad’s view, as
long as women of the country are not uplifted and granted equal status with
men in all walks of life – political, social, economic, domestic, educational,
India could neither progress nor make any significant advance in any field.
Women play vital roles in every facet of modern society in numerous
areas of scientific and technological development, women have historically
been responsible for crucial advances, yet they remain severely under –
represented in all major scientific areas, There have been improvements in
access for women to science over the last two decades.
Human resource in a word which is very applicable in science and
technology organization meaning both men and women power. We women
are not so learned but we are more pure. Without SHAKTI (power) there is
no regeneration for the world. There is no chance for the welfare of the
world unless the condition of women is empowered. Women have proved
themselves as equal in many professions as well as proved themselves even
better suited than men in others.
The traditional role of a man is earning the money for running the
home. This has changed to a great extent. Working women contribute to
the expenses of running their homes as well. However here has been little
contribution form men in terms of shouldering some of the responsibilities
of women.
Women find the outside world challenging and attractive. They like
the freedom it brings to them. Science has really changed the shape of this
earth. But science couldn’t prosper without the contributions of researchers
and scientists. Through out the ages many genius minds have contributed
in the technological evolution of this planet.
Science and technology have been an integral part of Indian
civilization and culture. Women and men have been active in science from
the inception of human civilization. One of the defining marks of humanity
is the ability to affect and predict our environment. Science is the creation
of structure. For our world and technology, the use of structure has been
stepping stone to our progress. Women and men have researched and
solved each emerging need.
3
4. Most myths and religions place the beginnings of agriculture, laws,
civilization, mathematics, calendars, time keeping and medicine into the
hands of women. Women contributed in all the spheres of technical
advancement of humanity. They held the same burdens of scholarship as
the men did, and accomplished just as much. Women were and are
resourceful, passionate and creative about their work as any other male
scientist.
Regardless of how hard there man and woman of the house work,
there are certain areas of the home that are the women province in happy
times and her nemesis in not so happy times. She has contributed in all the
spheres of technical advancement of humanity. They held the same
burdens of scholarship as the men did and accomplished just as much.
Women were and are resourceful, passionate and creative about their work
as any other male scientist. Working women contribute to the expenses of
running their homes as well as men. On the surface, this seems to strike
sense. Women are more prone to workplace because of the many roles they
play in life; as career woman, wife, mother, daughter and friend.
The status of women in modern India is sort of a paradox. If on one hand
she is at the peak of ladder of success, on the other hand she is mutely
suffering the violence afflicted on her by her own family members. As compared
with past women in modern times have achieved a lot but in reality they have to
still travel a long way. Their path is full of roadblocks. The women have left the
secured domain of their home and are not in the battlefield of life, fully armored
with their talent. They had proven themselves, but in India they are yet to get
their dues.
Though there are problems in the lives of Indian women but they are
always ready to fight all the odds and enjoy their life to the full they have their
own talent, hobbies, and they socialize according to Indian customs.

5. Conclusions:-
Woman is the magnificent creation of god, a multi faceted personality
with the power of benevolence, adjustability, integrity and tolerance. She is
companion of man, gifted with equal mental faculty, a protector and
provider, the embodiment of love.
"Give me good mothers" said Napoleon, "and I will give you a good
nation." Our mothers in free India have to play an important role. They are
the makers of the fate of the nation for "the hand that rocks the cradle is the
hand that rules the world.” Our constitution grants equality of status and of
opportunity with men. They have distinguished themselves in various walks
of life.
With the help of these social reformers women of India slowly started
recognizing her true potential. She started questioning the rules laid down
for her by the society. As a result, started breaking barriers and earned a
respectable position in the world. Today Indian women have excelled in each
and every field from social work to visiting space station. There is no area
which remained unconquered by Indian women. Whether it is politics,
sports, entertainment, literature, technology everywhere we can hear
applauses for her.
Indian women have not just made their mark on earth but they have
engraved their name in the whole universe by flying to space. Kalpana
Chawla, who was the member of Colombia Space Shuttle, which exploded
on its way back, was the first Indian women astronaut who visited space
station. And following on her footsteps another woman of Indian origin
Sunita Williams has become the second one to be the member of
International Space Station crew.
Indian women have mastered anything and everything which a
woman can dream of. But she still has to go a long way to achieve equal
status in the minds of Indian men.
Really women are less selfish and more dedicated to duty and have
much patience than men by nature. In order to make optimum use of our
vast womanpower, we must liberate Indian woman of many social taboos.
However, mere legislation cannot emancipate the lot of our women. This
needs a radical change in our mental make up and our social structure. For
this, we shall have to foster a social emancipating spirit in our everyday life.
The conservative male chauvinistic attitude shall have to give way to
liberalism. It can be said with a sense of pride and confidence that the
future of women in India is quite bright and prosperity will be safe in their
hands.

6. Emotional, affectionate, caring and yet firm, a woman is the
perennial source of inspiration for man in the odyssey of life. Despite
hurdles like male chauvinism and indifference towards them, women have
proved their worth as teachers, administrators, officers, entrepreneurs,
doctors, engineers, nurses, and computer scientists and almost in all the
spheres of activity contributing to social transformation and nation building.
Now, the women in India are heading towards advancement and by
dint of their devotion, dedication and determination, women like Mother
Teresa, Ramadevi, Bhagini Nivedita, Indira Gandhi and many more others
played a vital role in the transformation of the nation socially.
