high frequency patient­
doctor contact declined

It’s estimated that half a million Americans
are currently living with kidney failure. Nearly
400,000 make a triweekly trip to their nearest
dialysis center in order to have their blood
cleansed, a treatment that takes around four
hours. It should be straight forward – but for
most, their life expectancy could directly
depend on the standard of care that they
receive.
A study published in the Journal of the
American Society of Nephrology* last week
showed that patients with low patient­doctor
contact were 11% more likely to die than
those with high patient­doctor contact. Even
the length of contact made a difference, with
every 5­minute reduction in contact leading to
a 5% increase in mortality.
