4. Garfield School district is a part of the
National School Lunch Program.
Maschio’s serves all 11 schools with well-
balanced meals that meet or exceed the USDA
guidelines.
The National School Lunch Program is a
federally assisted meal program operating in
over 101,000 public and non‐profit private
schools and residential child care institutions
The NSLP provided nutritionally balanced,
low‐cost or free lunches to more than 31
million children each school day in 2010.

5. School lunches must meet the applicable
recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines
for Americans
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans
recommends:
◦ that no more than 30 percent of an individual's
calories come from fat, and less than 10 percent
from saturated fat.
◦ provide one‐third of the Recommended Dietary
Allowances of protein Vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron,
calcium, and calories.

6. Maschio’s follows the Child Nutrition
Enhanced Meal Pattern
Protein, Grains, Milk, Fruits, and Vegetables
are required
Protein-2 oz or more, Milk- ½ pint, Fruits ½
cup, Vegetables ½ cup, Grains- 2 servings
Students must choose 3 out of the 5
components for a reimbursable meal

8. Lunch includes a hot entrée, cooked/raw
vegetables, fruit choice, low fat milk choice.
There are alternates to the hot entrées that
include sandwiches, wraps, bagel/yogurt
bags, freshly prepared salads.
A bread basket with whole grain selections
are available daily.

9. All milk available is either 1% or skim

12. Each month a new fruit and vegetable is
highlighted on the menu and educational
nutrition information is available to the
students through our Cafeteria Connection
Newsletter. The newsletter also includes
healthy recipes highlighting the produce.

13. Proposed Changes for 2012-2013 School
Year:
Increased Fruit/Vegetables up to 1 cup/day
based on age group
◦ (½ cup dark greens, ½ cup orange (including sweet
potatoes), ½ cup legumes
◦ Starchy vegetables may only be served 1c/week)
Grains must be 50% Whole Grains

to School Program for the past three years.

with farmers in bringing local produce into
