3. Welcome!
We are excited to have you join us today at our Tenth Annual “San Diego Venture Summit”.
We are delighted to be hosting 100 venture capitalists from throughout California and
beyond, as well as several hundred local business leaders.
Our thanks go out to the corporate sponsors this year’s Summit: Comerica Bank, Cooley LLP,
Ernst & Young, DLA Piper, and Jones Lang LaSalle. Without their time, efforts and financial
support, this program would not be possible.
We hope you enjoy meeting 30 of San Diego’s “Coolest Companies.” They represent just a
small portion of the vibrant start up activity here in San Diego in the life sciences, cleantech,
technology, and consumer goods industries. We hope you will have a chance to hear their
stories and celebrate their progress.
San Diego is one of the leading entrepreneurial and innovation centers in the country.
Known nationwide for its concentration of technology, life science, telecommunications,
cleantech and defense-oriented research that helps create exciting new companies; our
region is bolstered by the resources and graduates from three nationally ranked universities.
We exist in the greater Southern California eco-system which is the third largest market for
venture capital investment in the country.
San Diego Venture Group is helping San Diego maintain its status as a significant
entrepreneurial and venture community. We work to support and promote our venture
capital eco-system y providing an informal and dynamic environment for entrepreneurs,
venture capitalists, community leaders, and business advisors to develop greater insights
into the process of forming, funding, and building new companies.
We thank you all for coming today and for making the San Diego Venture Summit a
continuing reality. We hope you will join us a member as we work to bring together
entrepreneurs, capital providers and advisors. We wish you success in all your ventures!
Sincerely,
M. David Titus Leo Spiegel

Bob Holmen
Managing Director, Miramar Venture Partners
Bob Holmen is a Managing Director and co-founder of Miramar Venture Partners. Formed in
2001, Miramar invests in early- and mid-stage technology companies, with an emphasis on
Southern California opportunities. Currently Miramar focuses on core technology sectors of
Cloud Computing, Storage, Digital Media and Medical IT. Bob has spent his career building

in diverse roles, from software engineer at Hughes Aircraft to senior executive roles at
technology and life sciences companies to venture investor. Currently, Bob serves on the Boards of the following
Miramar portfolio companies: FastSoft, Matrix Sensors and Predixion Software. He also served on the board of
SiliconSystems until it was acquired by Western Digital Corporation.

national engineering honor society at Stanford. He received his J.D. from UC Berkeley in 1989. Bob is an Adjunct
Professor at USC’s Marshall School of Business, teaching Investing in New Ventures, and serves on the Board of the
San Diego Venture Group.
Dr. Paul Kedrosky
Investor, speaker, writer, entrepreneur
Dr. Kedrosky is an investor, speaker, writer, media guy, and entrepreneur. In his spare time he
is a dangerous Twitterer, contributing editor for Bloomberg, and the editor of Infectious Greed,
one of the most popular financial blogs available over the Interweb. In the dusty distance of
long-ago, Dr K. founded what he is reasonably sure was the first hosted blogging site, GrokSoup.
After having grown it to be one the largest such services on the Interweb (admittedly before
there were other such services), he demonstrated his unerring ability to enter fast-growing
markets before they take off, and exit before they have grown large enough to deliver an island-
purchasing exit. The rest is history, or least an index entry in one book on blogging. Even further
back in time, Dr. Kedrosky was one of the first technology equity analysts at a major brokerage firm. Back before
there were such things as credit default swaps, collateralized debt obligations, and subprime mortgages, we
vandalism-loving greed-heads on Wall Street were forced to take down capitalism the hard way — by selling over-
valued technology companies to an unsuspecting public via initial public offerings. While it eventually worked out
(c.f., the tech crash of 2000), the next generation of Wall Street-ers learned from our inefficiency and took down
the global money grid in half the time it took us to mess up Nasdaq. Lesson learned. He is an active investor in
public and private equities, despite having watched both sorts of sausages being made. That almost certainly
represents, as Samuel Johnson once said about a man’s second marriage, the triumph of hope over experience.
Nevertheless, Dr. Kedrosky has more than fifty early-stage investments to his credit, and rather than brag in an
unseemly way about his many successes he will continue to point to that “fifty” number. Fifty, fifty, etc. Dr.
Kedrosky has a Ph.D. in the economics of technology (which he mostly uses when bluffing outside of poker), a
master’s degree in finance (which he mostly uses when bluffing in poker), and an undergraduate degree in
engineering (which a professor once said he would take away, if he had the means).
10. Our lawyers bring together venture capitalists and
emerging companies through a fully integrated service
offering, while our Venture Pipeline business unit matches
dynamic young companies with great investors.
We believe that when serving and interacting with
our clients, everything matters.
