11. Risk versus Aspiration
The Blended and Flexible Learning Standards (BFL Standards) provide CSU with an
institutional framework, risk and quality improvement strategy to enable CSU to
continuously maintain national leadership in flexible and distance education.
11
12. Recommendation
That a definition be established for blended and flexible learning that encompasses online
learning, flexible learning and distance education.
12
13. Flexible Learning
Flexible learning” provides opportunities to improve the student learning
experience through flexibility in time, pace, place (physical, virtual, on-
campus, off-campus), mode of study (print-based, face-to-face, blended,
online), teaching approach (collaborative, independent), forms of assessment
and staffing. It may utilise a wide range of media, environments, learning
spaces and technologies for learning and teaching.
13
14. Blended & Flexible Learning
“Blended and flexible learning” is a design approach that examines the
relationships between flexible learning opportunities, in order to optimise
student engagement and equivalence in learning outcomes regardless of
mode of study (Keppell, 2010).
14
15. Purpose of the BFL Standards
The purpose of the BFL Standards is to establish at CSU a clear and
consistent Standard, known and used by all CSU staff,
concerning the policy and practice of learning and teaching.
