- Definition of Information Competence Information competence (also referred to as information literacy or information fluency in some publications) is a core instructional pedagogy in higher education. The Association of College and Research Libraries , the primary professional organization for academic librarians, first described information literacy in 1989. Numerous disciplinary and accrediting associations have also incorporated the Information Literacy Standards for Higher Education and/or information literacy language into their documents. An Information Competent student is able to: Determine the extent of information needed; Access the needed information effectively and efficiently; Evaluate information and its sources critically; Incorporate selected information into one's knowledge base; Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose; Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information; Access and use information ethically and legally.
- Highlight the features as well as the critical questions users need to ask when reviewing the retrievals and SFX menus. Teach our patrons how to use their critical thinking skills to identify important key words, relevant databases, and the ongoing need to be able to identify elements of the citation.
