11. MOUNTAINS
Ganekogorta: is a mountain located in the south of Bilbao. It
is 997m height.
Artxanda:It’s one of the two chains of mountains
that delimit the municipality of Bilobao. It is the
lowest one. (300m)
Pagasarri: It is a mountain located in Bilbao, whose altitude is
of 671 m.
13. IZARO
It is located in the Cantabric sea. It is next to Bermeo, a
little village. The island is lengthened and with a triangular
shape. In a war the island get deserted. Now a days there
isn’t anyone living there.
15. SURFING
Bakio: There are two surf championship every year.
The most important one: in winter, when the waves are
bigger. Bakioko Surf Txapelketa
Mundaka: There is a world championship in Mundaka
every year. It said that is one of the best beaches for
surfing in the world.
16. Laga: There is a little championship. It isn’t very
important, but some surfers say that is a very good
beach for surfing.
Sopelana: In this beach there are a lot of courses of
surfing.

24. When was Bilbao founded?
Bilbao was one of the first towns that were founded in the
fourteenth century.
Then the lord of Biscay, Diego López V of Haro, founded
Bilbao.

25. THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR
The Spanish Civil War was fought from 17 July 1936 to 1 April 1939 between the
Republicans and the Nacionalists. The Republicans were the ones who formed
the government in that time. The Nationalists prevailed, and Franco ruled
Spain for the next 36 years, from 1939 until his death in 1975.

26. How did the Spanish Civil War affect Bilbao?
On 31 August 1936, the city suffered the first bombing. On the next month,
further bombings by German planes occurred, in coordination with Franco's
forces. The battle lasted until 19 June of that year, when Lieutenant Colonel
Putz was ordered to destroy all bridges over the estuary, and the troops of the
5th Brigade took the city from the mountains Malmasin, Pagasarri, and
Arnotegi (mountains around Bilbao).
27. Guernica By Picasso
Guernica is a painting by Pablo Picasso. It was created in
response to the bombing of Guernica, a Basque Country
village in northern Spain, by German and Italian
warplanes, it happened on 26 April 1937 during the Spanish
Civil War.

28. IN THE 1940s...
When the war finished, Bilbao returned to its industrial
development,also the population grew. In the 1940s, the city was
rebuilt, starting with the bridges.Over the next decade, the iron
industry came again. On 31 July 1959, the terrorist organization
ETA was born in Bilbao.
29. ABOUT ETA...
It is an armed Basque nationalist and separatist organization.
The group was founded in 1959. Since 1968, ETA has been
held responsible for killing 829 people.

30. INDUSTRY

31. IN THE 1980s
On the 26th August 1983, when “Aste Nagusia” was finishing. That night a very
amount of water fell all over the Basque Country and caused floods. Destroyed
more than 101 buildings, there were between 34 and 43 deaths and 5 missing.
The first floods were in Gipuzkoa and then in Nafarroa, Biscay and Araba too.
The Ibaizabal river overflowed about 5 metres. The water swamped the first
floors of the old part of the city. Thanks of young people who joined the factory
with the bridge, many people managed to scape unhurt.

33. IN THE 1990s
The Bilbao Guggenheim Museum was opened. The museum carried a lot of
tourists and the population of Bilbao increased. Also Bilbao’s underground was
opened.

34. IN THE 2000s...
Bilbao suffered a change, the “Peseta” was replaced by the “Euro” (like in the
whole Spain)
35. IN 2011...
In 2011 the terrorist band ETA stopped making attacks.
Now, most of the members of the band are in prison.

Bilbao has become in a green city instead of being an industrial city as in the past.

41. RELIGION
The official religion in Bilbao is Roman Catholisim,
but as there are lots of foreigners, Islam, Judism and
Buddhism are also practised.

43. SEMANA GRANDE I
It’s Bilbao's main festival attracting over 100,000
people. It begins on the Saturday of the 3rd week of
August each year, it lasts 9 days and it has been
celebrated since 1978.
44. SEMANA GRANDE II
Marijaia: Marijaia is the official symbol of the festival
and since 1997 it has its own song called "Badator
Marijaia“.
There are fireworks at night and during the day there are
parades, also there are attractions and a lot of concerts.
45. LOCAL FESTIVALS I
Olentzero is a Basque Christmas tradition.
He is a coalman who comes to town at night on the
24th December to drop off presents for children.
46. LOCAL FESTIVALS II
Saint Thomas’s day is celebrated on the 22nd
December. In this day, some people dress up with
typical Basque clothes, and they set up some stands in
which they sell Basque cheese, meat, etc. They also sell
talos, which are pancakes with chorizo.
47. ARTISTIC FESTIVALS
For example the BBK live festival: It’s a pop and rock
music festival. We celebrate it in July in Bilbao. The
festival is one of the most important of the state.
Famous rock bands such as Coldplay have played here.
48. GASTRONOMY The Basque Country’s gastronomy is very varied; fish,
meat, vegetables, etc.
It has more “Michelin” stars than any other place in
Spain and Portugal. Michelin stars are prizes that are
given to the best cooks each year.

This is the best known museum. It´s located in
front of the Inlet of Bilbao and it has many
sculptures. The scupltures you can see out of the
museum are, for example, Puppy, the `little
flowered dog´ and the spider. Inside it you can
see thousands of artworks like the labyrinth or
the paint cannon. It was designed by Frank Gehry.

The sports that are practised in the Basque Country are called “Herri
Kirolak”. There are a lot of sorts like:
SOKA TIRA: A group of four or eight people with a total weight determined
and above a rubber surface, is trying to pull the other team down with the
rope .
77. AIZKORA:The aizkora is a modality that consist cutting as
soon as possible one or several logs placed horizontally or
vertically.
78. ARPANA: You have to cut trunks as fast as you can. Is a
team compound by two people.
79. STONE LIFTING: A person using his own strength has to lift
a stone from the ground to his shoulders.
80. TRANSPORT OF TXINGAS: is to carry two weights or
"txingas", one in each hand, without limitation of
time, as far as possible.

Mamés (Saint Mammes). Mammes was a semi-
