When was Bilbao founded?
Bilbao was one of the first towns that were founded in the
fourteenth century.
Then the lord of Biscay, Diego López V of Haro, founded
Bilbao.
Diego Lopez
V of Haro
THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR
The Spanish Civil War was fought from 17 July 1936 to 1 April 1939 between the
Republicans and the Nacionalists. The Republicans were the ones who formed
the government in that time. The Nationalists prevailed, and Franco ruled
Spain for the next 36 years, from 1939 until his death in 1975.
WHO WAS FRANCO?
Franco was the dictator of
Spain
How did the Spanish Civil War affect Bilbao?
On 31 August 1936, the city suffered the first bombing. On the next month,
further bombings by German planes occurred, in coordination with Franco's
forces. The battle lasted until 19 June of that year, when Lieutenant Colonel
Putz was ordered to destroy all bridges over the estuary, and the troops of the
5th Brigade took the city from the mountains Malmasin, Pagasarri, and
Arnotegi (mountains around Bilbao).
Guernica By Picasso
Guernica is a painting by Pablo Picasso. It was created in
response to the bombing of Guernica, a Basque Country
village in northern Spain, by German and Italian
warplanes, it happened on 26 April 1937 during the Spanish
Civil War.
GUERNICA
IN THE 1940s...
When the war finished, Bilbao returned to its industrial
development, also the population grew. In the 1940s, the city was
rebuilt, starting with the bridges.Over the next decade, the iron
industry came again. On 31 July 1959, the terrorist organization
ETA was born in Bilbao.
ABOUT ETA...
It is an armed Basque nationalist and separatist organization.
The group was founded in 1959. Since 1968, ETA has been
held responsible for killing 829 people.
These were some
members of ETA
speaking.
INDUSTRY
In the 1950s, Bilbao Little by little turned
was an industrial city. into a greener city
IN THE 1980s
On the 26th August 1983, when “Aste Nagusia” was finishing. That night a very
amount of water fell all over the Basque Country and caused floods. Destroyed
more than 101 buildings, there were between 34 and 43 deaths and 5 missing.
The first floods were in Gipuzkoa and then in Nafarroa, Biscay and Araba too.
The Ibaizabal river overflowed about 5 metres. The water swamped the first
floors of the old part of the city. Thanks of young people who joined the factory
with the bridge, many people managed to scape unhurt.
IN THE 1990s
The Bilbao Guggenheim Museum was opened. The museum carried a lot of
tourists and the population of Bilbao increased. Also Bilbao’s underground was
opened.
Frank
Gehry Norman
Foster
IN THE 2000s...
Bilbao suffered a change, the “Peseta” was replaced by the “Euro” (like in the
whole Spain)
IN 2011...
In 2011 the terrorist band ETA stopped making attacks.
Now, most of the members of the band are in prison.
HOW HAS IT CHANGED?
Bilbao has become in a green city instead of being an industrial city as in the past.
Now Bilbao has new monuments:
before
after
Our football
stadium: San
Mames
Iberdrola
Tower.
