2. The first step: definition.
At the beginning, we should realize
what the lexicology is. According to
Merriam-Webster Dictionary it is a
branch of linguistics concerned with
the signification and application of
words. It has its own sphere of study
and, of course, its own terms.
Let’s learn some of them!
3. The second step: terms.
As it was said, lexicology is the branch
of linguistics that for its turn means
the study of the nature, structure, and
variation of language, including
phonetics, phonology, morphology,
syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics,
and pragmatics.
4. Lexicology isn’t the only science that
studies a word, that’s why links with
such sciences as:
Phonetics. The science concerned
with the study of speech processes,
including the production, perception,
and analysis of speech sounds from
both an acoustic and a physiological
point of view
…
5. … and:
Grammar. The branch of linguistics
that deals with syntax and
morphology, sometimes also
phonology and semantics.
Stylistics. The study of the style of
different writers and types of literature
and elements of language.
6. In the network of lexicology word meaning is
studied. The two main types of meaning
are the grammatical and lexical meanings.
The lexical
meaning
has several aspects
Denotational
Connotational
Pragmatic
7. The denotational aspect of lexical
meaning establishes correlation
between the name and the object it
expresses.
The connotational aspect of lexical
meaning reflects the speaker’s
attitude towards what he speaks
about.
The pragmatic aspect of lexical
meaning conveys information on the
situation of communication.
8. The third step: learning.
Well, my work is over. I’ve tried to
explain you in a simple way the most
important terms of lexicology. And
now it’s your turn to work and to learn
them.
Good Luck!
