2. 5.0 out of 5 stars The Bose QuietComfort 15 Doesn't Disappoint
By C. J. Healey "ZCT" (Minneapolis, MN)
A few years ago flying on a cross country trip I was fortunate enough to be bumped to first
class. I sat next to a rich dude who subtly bragged about his material possessions and owned
property during take-off and landing. One of the items he bragged about was his new Bose
Quiet Comfort 15 headphones, and he insisted I listen to them. Sure enough, they were
outstanding, but I didn't travel often enough to justify the price tag.
Well fast forward a few years and I now have a job that requires me to fly a few times a
month. So I took the plunge and used my hotel loyalty points to get me a free set of the Bose
Quiet Comfort 15 headphones.
They impressed me out of the box as much as the very first time I listened to them (or the
equivalent I had tried a few years back). The noise just melts away into the background so
that it is hardly noticeable at all. I took my first flight with the Quiet Comfort 15 today and
tried them in a very busy crowded airport terminal. My music sounded wonderful, and the
cacophony of random people and machine noise all but vanished. And that was quite a
challenging test, the noise levels were pretty high in a fairly confined round terminal hub.
The music source was simply my phone, a Samsung Infuse, not a dedicated music player.
Next I wore my Quiet Comfort 15 on a plane for a short 80 minute jet flight. It's like being in
a different world. The music from my android phone sounded awesome, the noise practically
vanished. Somehow without the constant racket of the plane the time seemed to just go by
quicker too.
The Quiet Comfort 15 headphones were extremely comfortable, and the excessively hot day
didn't add any problems either.
To me Bose is a company I have a lot of respect for. They always seem to innovate and
amaze. As an audiologist I am well versed in acoustics and the physics of sound, and to
create this level of noise reduction so seamlessly is very impressive, especially if their claims
of battery life are close to accurate.
The QC 15 headphones fit in a very attractive slim case. There is even a little space in there
for a couple of spare batteries if you wanted. This model ships with a standard headphone
cord and also an iPod/iPad/iPhone version which has a microphone on the wire. I question
how useful that would be simply because when you wear these headphones it is hard to tell
how loud your own voice is to some extent, so I'd be worried about shouting to the person on
the other end of the phone, and also if it is noisy enough to wear them, I wonder how well the
person being called would hear anyway. In any case, I replaced my iPhone with an Android
based phone recently so I've not tested that feature.

3. The bottom line is these are expensive headphones. Truth be told if you go to Best Buy and
listen to some other headphones at half the price, you'd probably get better or similar sound
quality. What you won't get though is the incredible noise reduction system that Bose has
been working on for many years. That combination of a great sound AND the noise reduction
is what makes this product work. If your life involves plenty of air travel, or other similar
travel that includes background noise, then these will really improve that journey for you.
Music sounds great, audio books are far easier to hear, even Angry Birds is more enjoyable
without all that background noise. In fact when you put these on in almost any environment,
it makes you realize how much ambient noise there is in so many places.
I think the only real issue is if your budget and lifestyle justifies the price tag.

Update: Since writing this I have also tried watching a DVD on my laptop in my hotel room.
Again these Bose Quiet Comfort 15 headphones eat through noise like the air conditioning,
ventilation in the bathroom, noises from other guests, the whir of the DVD drive, the
refrigerator etc. The sound quality off my laptop was just exceptional too, rich bass, clear
treble, good mid tones. I can already see myself using these for more than just plane rides.
Another experience from a frequent flyer…
5.0 out of 5 stars Another Positive review on the Bose QC 15.
By Yummittman
In the market for some noise cancelling headphones, I hit Google to see what was around. It
didn't take long for the Bose QC15's to pop up. I read many reviews, on many websites, and
finally decided to take the plunge and hit the "Buy It" button on Amazon. Living in Australia,
these retail here for $499, a lot of coin for a pair of cans. Luckily with the strength of our
dollar, I ended up paying just over $300 shipped to my door from Amazon. Shipping was
pretty quick, and soon I was putting them to the test.
The main reason for buying these is for air travel. My job sees me on a plane twice a week,
every week. Admittedly its a very short flight, ~50 minutes, but I found out that trying to
listen to my iPod, or watch movies on my iPad, I had to have the volume to nearly max to
hear what was going on over all of the noise.
Unfortunately, before I got to try them out on a flight, I was stuck at home sick with the flu.
But this gave me some good testing in the home environment, and here are my findings:
- When you put them on, you create a little quiet world of your own.
- A LOT of background noise just goes away.
4. - Audio quality is pretty good. Damm good in fact. As some reviews note, you hear things
you haven't heard before.
- Yes, they are comfortable, but I have to take them off after a while to give the ears a bit of a
rub down.
- Although you can still hear people speak, they sound very distant, and you have to either
take them off or get them to repeat what they are saying.
- You can listen to music at much lower levels than you normally have to, which leads to less
fatigue.
- The iPod / iPhone lead that they now come with is just great. I have used them on my
iPhone on some handsfree calls and they work really good. Having the volume and skip
button is just great.
- All up, very good, with no shortcomings so far.
I have since been on a few plane trips, and can now report on their performance that they
were primarily designed for.
The first trip I took, I just used them in noise cancelling mode, without the lead plugged in.
This is actually really cool that you can just pop them on, and dial out the background noise
without a lead or cord hanging around. The amount of noise they attenuate is amazing. They
don't get rid of everything, but it is significantly reduced.
On recent flights, I have listened to the in flight entertainment, and found that the volume
level is significantly less than what you would normally have. The constant jet / wind noise is
cut right down, and the general background chatter is almost inaudible.
I really love these Quiet Comfort 15 headphones, and don't regret buying them for one
minute. For $300, they are probably just worth it, but if I had to pay much more, I doubt I
would.
The fact that some reviews complain about the fact that they have to be switched on to work I
find a mute point. Battery life is very reasonable. I am still on the original battery, and have
used them a fair bit, even accidentally leaving them on for extended periods.
Other comments about the cable being a bit thin are also not an issue. In fact I see the thin
cable as an advantage, as you don't have a bulky cable hanging around.
THE GOOD.
- Very good sound quality
- Comfortable (for on ear headphones)
- Long battery life and easy to carry around a spare AAA battery
- iPod lead is great
5. - Carry case is good
- Noise cancelling is excellent
THE NOT SO GOOD.
- A bit pricey in Australia
In conclusion, if you are after a good pair of noise cancelling headphones, you should
seriously consider a pair of Bose QC15's. I really like mine and would highly recommend
them.
