السَّلاَمُ ع لَََيْكُم وَ رَحْمَةُ الله وَبَرَكَاتهُ Jaffna Muslim Association –UK
Reg. Charity No. 1143032
Starting a charity isn’t easy but we managed it !!
Founded in 2002, Jaffna Muslim Association is a non-profit charity
organisation created to help the people who were displaced from the town of
Jaffna in Sri Lanka in 1990.
Jaffna Muslim Association focuses on providing help to this community in Sri
Lanka- we have provided financial help for widows, children education,
medical (funding operations, treatment etc.) for those who need it and built
buildings necessary to the community (i.e.: Masjids, graveyards, etc.) – we
have also had an emergency appeal for the victims of the 2004 Boxing Day
Tsunami by collecting money for those affected.
Every year JMA collect Qurbani and Fitra contribution in the United Kingdom
to help Muslims from the Northern Province suffering as a result of the Sri
Lankan Civil War- not only does this help provide for the community but it
builds a bridge between a separated community and brings it together once
more.
In the United Kingdom, various projects are held to keep the community
together- community Iftars, Eid celebrations, children’s programmes,
sponsoring people in Sri Lanka who need medical/financial/educational
support etc.
We believe that uniting the community and improving the lives of our brothers
and sisters in Sri Lanka is very important- hence why JMA officially became a
registered non-profit charity organisation in 2011, to further our goals. In more
recent times, the community have been trying to re-build their lives in Sri
Lanka and re-settle into the area from which they were displaced with the help
of JMA. From the dawn of JMA a lot of work has been put in to fully
establish this charity organisation-people have left the organisation and new
people have joined. little by little our organisation has been building up into a
fully functioning charity.

The history of Jaffna Muslim Association UK
In the year 1998, we received a letter from the Northern Muslims
Rehabilitation organisation in Sri Lanka. It was a request to give financial
support so that they could recollect the data of the displaced Jaffna
Muslims dispersed in Sri Lanka. To discuss the matter of this letter, a few
Jaffna Muslims, only around 20 people, assembled in East London, 21 St
Martin’s Avenue, Upton Park.
This was the first ever meeting held by Jaffna Muslims in the UK.
From that day on, these few people started their charity work, without
having an official organisation. This was the seed that flourished into the
organisation called Jaffna Muslim Association, in 2002.
In 2002, Jaffna Muslim Association was founded with 15 nominated
trustees. This gathering was held in 51 High ham Road, Eastham. During
this event, Mr. Feroz was chosen as president of this organisation, Mr.
Fazil as secretary, and Mr. Rameez as treasurer.
Later on, in 2003, as the organisation grew further still, Mr. Husain
Farsan designed a logo for our establishment.
In 2004, we had a change of president, whose role was transferred to Mr.
Shah Jahan, whilst the secretary and treasurer remained in their positions.
A bank account was also opened during this year, by JMA-UK.
In 2007, Mr. Shah Jahan stepped down, and Mr. Gias became the
01/09/2014
President whilst Mr. Fazil remained secretary, and Mr. Rameez remained
treasurer.
From 2008 to 2010, we contributed to a variety of projects, which aided
people throughout Sri Lanka.
On the 25th of June 2011, Jaffna Muslim Association became a registered
charity organisation in the UK.
From 2011 onwards, we had 17 executive members in our association:
Mr.Gias (President), Mr.Fazil (Secretary), Mr.Farhan (Treasurer),
Mr.Rameez, Mr.Jairoos, Mr.Ajmal, Mr.Faleel, Mr.Ramzeen, Mr.Riyaz,
Mr.Shameez, Mr.Rawzan, Mr.Niyas, Mr.Muzammil, Mr.Murzi,
Mr.Rameez (Wembly).
2011 was a fruitful year: we held 2 Iftar events, one in Eastham, and the
other in Luton. £853 worth of Fitra was distributed in Sri Lanka by JMA-UK
during this year, for 200 people. Amongst these people, 154 were
widows. 7 cows were furthermore slaughtered for Qurbani, and
distributed throughout Sri Lanka.
In 2012, JMA-UK had their first general election, and it was from that
election, that the new committee was born (as follows):
Mr.Gias (President)
Mr.Sarjun Saleem (Secretary)
Mr.Faiz (Treasurer)
Mr.Rameez (Vice President),
Mr.Riyaz (Assistant Secretary)
Mr.Jawsad (Assistant Treasurer),
Mr.Imran Junoob, Mr.Sawjeer, Mr.Ramzeen Aboobucker, Mr.Faleel,
Mr.Jairoos, Mr.Ajmal (East London),
Mr.Ruzan, Mr.Shameez (Harrow),
Mr.Rawzan, Mr.Niyas (Slough),
Mr.Saroojan (Leicester).

over the past few years and is currently thriving with over 100 children.
JMA-UK also holds the honour of being the first ever Sri Lankan
organisation to give children an opportunity to perform on stage.
On behalf of Jaffna Muslim Association, with much appreciation and we
would like to thank everyone who has helped us in the past, and all those
who still assist us in every little thing we do. Jaffna Muslim Association’s
door has always been, is always, and always will be open for all acts of
charity, no matter how large or small, thanks to the help of everyone who
assists us every single day.

In the United Kingdom, various projects are held to keep the community together- community Iftars, Eid celebrations, children’s programmes, sponsoring people in Sri Lanka who need medical/financial/educational support etc. We believe that uniting the community and improving the lives of our brothers and sisters in Sri Lanka is very important- hence why JMA officially became a registered non-profit charity organisation in 2011, to further our goals. In more recent times, the community have been trying to re-build their lives in Sri Lanka and re-settle into the area from which they were displaced with the help of JMA. From the dawn of JMA a lot of work has been put in to fully establish this charity organisation-people have left the organisation and new people have joined. little by little our organisation has been building up into a fully functioning charity.

It was a request to give financial support so that they could recollect the data of the displaced Jaffna Muslims dispersed in Sri Lanka. To discuss the matter of this letter, a few Jaffna Muslims, only around 20 people, assembled in East London, 21 St Martin’s Avenue, Upton Park. This was the seed that flourished into the organisation called Jaffna Muslim Association, in 2002. In 2002, Jaffna Muslim Association was founded with 15 nominated trustees. This gathering was held in 51 High ham Road, Eastham. During this event, Mr. Feroz was chosen as president of this organisation, Mr. Fazil as secretary, and Mr. Rameez as treasurer. Later on, in 2003, as the organisation grew further still, Mr. Husain Farsan designed a logo for our establishment.
