BusinessObjects Web Intelligence
What is SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence?
BusinessObjects Web Intelligence is a web based tool that allows business users to access and analyze
corporate data from heterogeneous data sources. In order to allow for robust query and analysis options,
Web intelligence grants the ability to directly access the database, opening many possibilities which are a
rarity in most other business intelligence platforms.
Apart from queries and analysis tasks, reporting functionalities are also deeply integrated into
BusinessObjects Web Intelligence – making it “the Swiss army knife” of Business intelligence tooling.

Querying with BusinessObjects Web Intelligence
When it comes to querying, the biggest benefit of Web Intelligence is the ability to retrieve data
from heterogeneous sources – meaning that the data sources can vary in nature. Below is a list of
supported data sources:
Relational database management systems (RDBMS)
OLAP servers (Online analytical processing)
Microsoft Excel files, as well as Comma-separated-value files (CSV)
Web services (regardless of the platform they are run on)
Advanced analysis workspaces
SAP HANA databases (high-performance analytical appliance)
SAP Info Cubes personal data providers
The latter is especially beneficial thanks to the ability to compute in-memory, thus significantly
increasing system performance.
And while the semantic layer is part of the core structures that are in use by BusinessObjects Web
Intelligence, users are also allowed to directly access data sources if need be. This is a humongous

advantage to what competitors are offering, since it does allow multiple possibilities that were
unheard of previously.

Reporting with BusinessObjects Web Intelligence
Once the data is retrieved, a report is often times the most requested output form. In web intelligence, data
can be presented in multiple shapes and forms:
Bar charts
Pie charts
Tables
Cross tables
In the form of a multi-block report
Each of the above has its own uses, and it is up to the business intelligence specialist to best determine which
form suits which type of data. Most importantly as far as the tool goes – the possibilities are present. For

Data analysis with Web Intelligence
The core business asset of BusinessObjects Web Intelligence is the ability to analyze data and perform
operations on top of it. Software-wise, you are able to drag and drop objects, configure and place different
calculations, functions and triggers on the data, and most importantly – align design and craft the way it is
displayed.
Important decisions are only possible to make with a well-designed user experience, so a lot of the
responsibility lies within the hands of the developer.

Sharing data
The integration of SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence with other SAP components allows for easy sharing
between users. Especially helpful is the BI Launch Pad – granting you the opportunity to share documents
with anyone, save files as public documents and send completed files directly to interested parties.
The sharing procedure is centralized within the CMS (central management server).
If for some reason some of the recipients of your documents does not use BI Launch Pad, exporting to Excel
files or PDF is two clicks away - so you are covered in any situations.
