Are you planning to breed
chinchillas? Well, if you are than you
need to be a little careful because
chinchillas are unlike other exotic
pets that sit in one place. Chinchillas
are very agile and therefore breeding
chinchillas can be a hectic task if you
are handling pets for the very first
time. However, if you know more
about chinchillas and how they
behave you can have a better idea of how you need to handle them
and breeding chinchillas than will be somewhat comfortable and fun
too. Many of the new owners get easily frustrated with their chinchillas
because they really don’t understand their pet and what they want.
Chinchillas look very similar like squirrels but they are very different in
nature. Many pet owners who are breeding chinchillas often consider
that chinchillas behave like squirrels but that is not the case. Well,
some of the characteristics do match with squirrel to some extent but
chinchillas have their own characteristics. If you have two or more
chinchillas you should understand that body language and how they
will react to different situations. If you are breeding chinchillas you
should know that after four months chinchillas become sexually mature
and therefore you should not put two chinchillas of opposite sex
together.
Since you are the owner you should have a good knowledge about the
body structure of chinchillas that would help you a great deal in

2. breeding chinchillas. If you have a female chinchilla you should know
that female chinchillas need around eight months to get ready for
breeding although they are sexually mature at a very early stage. If you
are trying breeding chinchillas at an early stage than they will have
problems understanding each other and therefore chances are that
they will quarrel over the food and place which is why initially you
would have to give them individual cages and keep them close together
so that they don’t fight for space but get to know each other. You have
to remember that introduction between two chinchillas should be very
gradual because they learn things through routine. Hence, when they
see that there are other chinchillas along with them they will initially
adapt with them and mutually share their food and space.
If you planning on breeding chinchillas than make sure that cage is
clean and neat because chinchillas prefer to remain and breed in clean
places and they love hygiene. The pregnancy period takes around more
than hundred days and during the period you will see that the overall
appearance of the female chinchilla changes a lot. The abdomen and
the nipples of female chinchillas will begin to swell after ninety days.
Pet owners should avoid giving them dust baths because that could be
harmful to the babies as they might inhale some of the dust and
chemicals mixed with it. During the pregnancy make sure that you give
healthy food to female chinchillas so that there are no problems like
abortion. You need to ensure that the cage should be away from noise
and pollution and stored near some cool place.
