1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?

The Vast majority of films we researched
with a sharing genre to ours started with a
with some sort of action whether it be a
fight or a chase scene, this was a very
popular choice. However the odd few films
that we watched would start with a very
calm conversation, in a very calm ordinary
environment.
We chose to break the common convention of
these sort of films starting with an action
scene, as we felt that a simple conversation
in a calm environment could be as effective. It
allows the audience to really understand what
exactly is about to happen and why it
happens. We also chose to start the film like
this as we wanted to keep the amount of
action in our short film to a minimal amount
as it’s only 5 minutes long which is a very
short time for their to be a lot of action
involved, and we wouldn't want it to be rushed
and leave the audience confused.

Many of the films that
we researched had a
simplistic main title,
most times over just
a plain black image,
however the titles
that really caught our
eye were the ones
over an image.
Another thing we
found about most of
the titles was that the
font style and
colouring of the title
was always very
simple, Bold and
capital letters, mostly
black or white.
We decided to adopt this particular choice of
titling because we felt it would be better to set
the scene while showing the title of the movie.
We used a simple font in white, and in the
backdrop you can see a notorious estate. We
chose to have a simple white colour with a
simple white font as its already over an image
and we don’t want the audience to be
distracted from the image.

When looking at kidnapping scenes
from other films a common theme that
we found was that person being
kidnapped was usually tied to a chair,
and if there was torturing being involved
in order to obtain hidden information,
being drowned in the bath was a very
popular choice amongst a lot of the films
we researched.
As I’ve already stated earlier in this
question we tried to avoid action scenes
as it’s only a short film and we didn't
want these scenes to be rushed and to
confuse the audience. We really liked
the idea of the victim being drowned so
the kidnappers could gain information,
we also chose to tie the victim up to a
chair.

Seeing as our film is set on the urban
streets of south London we watched other
that were set in south London, and a very
common theme in these films was that the
vast majority of the characters would wear
clothes that would make them less
noticeable to the public eye; things like
hoodies, hats and dark coloured clothes.
Seeing as during our research we didn't
come across an urban film that didn't
include young men in hoodies we felt it
was imperative that we dressed our
characters in these sort of clothes. it also
added some realism to our film as its not
only in films that we see these clothes
being worn, but also in the real world, it’s
a strong stereotype that a lot of males
wear these clothes for the same reason
as they do in the films; to be less
noticeable to the public eye.

• 2 Out of 3 use all capital letters
• 3 out of 3 use bold font
• 3 out of 3 in lower third
• 1 out of 3 use only white font
• 2 out of 3 has a constant colour
We chose to use all capital letters as it
was only one word, and the vast majority
of films that had one worded titles used
all capital letters, it just seemed more
effective. The reason behind us using a
simple font with a constant white filling is
because there are details that we want
the audience to focus on in the image
behind the title, and wouldn't them to be
distracted as much by the title.

Nearly every single
poster that we looked
at had the main
character taking up
pretty much the whole
image, as you can see
in these 3 examples
i’ve given you here.
We felt it was simply
impossible to not follow this
convention as the percentage
of films with the main character
on the poster was just too high,
and if we were to break this
convention there is a risk our
film wouldn’t be identified as a
thriller

In all 3 of these posters
you can see that every
protagonist is holding a
weapon. During our
research a reoccurring
theme in posters of this
genre was that there was
almost always an object
of importance as well as
the main character on it.
we chose to use a brick as the object of
importance in our poster as it foreshadows
the events that take place in the film. In a way it
also sets the scene for the audience before
they’ve even watched the film, as once they
see the character holding a brick they
understand that there will be violence involved
in the story line.
